@rowsdower - great post. Interesting to note, that now the music industry is belatedly realising all this, the paying consumer is getting a far more reasonable deal for music which is digitally distributed - why pay as much or more for a 128kps mp3, DRM'ed with no packaging, as a CD track?

AOFanboi. Better than great, fantastic - I really wish I had the clarity of insight and general energy to write that! At last, some actual sense :D

Well every pirated game is a lost sale obviously, and it's perfectly fair to have the right to resell the same content over and over again on different/same media, even when you advertise it as "perfect sound forever" - or whatever.

I'm not condoning piracy, but for all the kiddies who shout "bad evil pirate", I just hope you've never borrowed and read a book from a friend, picked up someone else's newspaper on the train, etc... I guess the billions poured into lobbying and 'education' have really paid off.

I can't see why people aren't looking at Stardock, never mind Steam - huge sales and zero DRM. I think Greg's on(to) something.

They must believe they have differences, even if you don't ;) By extension, why not just lump humanity together?

Good review of a great game. I'm discovering all the magic I felt when I played the original - time is the best test of a classic. If you haven't played this and like the genre, you're missing out big time.

Marking down an expansion because the genre itself doesn't have a wide appeal, or because it's not wildly different is nonsensical and not the sort of thing I'd expect from KG.

For some reason I don't think your average consumer would even consider buying an expansion pack if they didn't like the original game. That much should be common sense.

JG, BigJonno: I was thinking you were in agreement (apart from the fruit thing)

There's been some excellent expansion packs this year for PC gamers - Beyond The Sword, Opposing Fronts, Kingdoms, Shivering Isles... This is one of them too - and with a nice big manual like the old days :)

We've been given good value.

I must admit I can't quite see the logic behind marking an expansion pack down because it only appeals to fans of the original though. You'd think that was the point...

/edit: sorry UL, I just realised you'd already said this. Guess I agree then ;)

J'eanne D'Arc is definitely more accessible. There will be people who really love this (DnD tactics), but it really dumps you in the deep-end. The interface is a masterwork of non-intuition and requires +5 perserverence. A flawed labour of love.

Nonetheless those who 'know' they like this will like this ;)

There's something wrong in starting off later - nursing your civ from the start is part of the fun. I often leave games completely if I haven't finished them off in one or two (mammoth) sittings, since I forget my grand plans for world domination...

Great review for a great xpack. It hits the essence of why it is such a good buy for civ fans.

Ideally there'd be more than half a para on the scenarios - they're varied and good - but I understand there is a limit and I'm happy for emphasis in the right places ;)

Sony cuts Euro price of PSP

captain_cupcake

For me, the PSP has turned into a truly useful piece of kit - admittedly with DA's custom firmware and an 8 Gb stick. It has good battery life and minimal load times. Always been a fan of slower / turn-based games - so not too fussed about its sloppy controls - and am eagerly waiting for stuff like D&D tactics and Disgaea portable (and FF tactics I guess again ;)).

Sid Meier's Pirates!

An excellent port of the PC version and great fun. It's pretty much identical if you've played that, but there are a few small differences as well as the UI - dancing uses 4 not 9 moves and you can only have 5 ships in your fleet. Trivial stuff like that - otherwise fits it well. The load times (for the handful of you left you still play games from UMD ;)) are fast and the game is responsive. A 9 no doubt in my eyes

Harrison hints at TV downloads

captain_cupcake

I don't watch too much TV - I carefully pick and choose series and watch those almost exclusively. So, seeing as my 360 is hooked up to a monitor with no TV tuner (and there isn't even a TV in the house right now), I would probably say "screw the TV licence" and never pay it again, downloading all the shows I want instead direct to my 360.

I haven't had a TV licence for 5 years. I detuned my TV, use it only for streaming content from a PC/watching DVDs, and then watched as the TVL struggled to comprehend the fact that someone could manage without. Aaah the letters we passed back and forth. Actually, if it wasn't for the TVL I would be happy to pay a licence fee, as I think the Beeb is a Good Thing (TM)

Vaguely on-topic, I guess I would welcome content delivered in this fashion (if not on that platform)

Vista problems exaggerated

captain_cupcake

MadMirko : +1

All in all, I think Vista rocks.

I've been more impressed than I expected. Like you I've been running a RTM version for a while and overall had a pleasant experience. I've been 'evaluating' it at home before introducing it to a professional environment.

Having said that, I've sat down this morning and found half a dozen updates and a corrupted CD-ROM driver, so my vista experience index has dropped from a ~5.3 to a ~4.5 today ;)

You're spot on though, it pays to wait, things are a bound to be a little *patchy* at the start (and for a while after that). It is the way

PS - I didn't vote in this so I'm not responsible for it being at 18th!

Actually, well then you may be responsible (if you mean you wanted it higher). Well you know what I mean ;)

I love the fact that people get so angry and debate the validity of a list created by, erm, themselves. This place is full of Jade Goody wannabies I'm sure, arguing about nothing!

secombe, I hope that's intentionally ironic. It's been more debate than anger - mainly from people chuffed to have their comments mentioned (which is natural ;)). Well that's what I see
