Haven't played for months but this article has me itching to fire it up again when home.

It's so much fun just wandering around and seeing what you find, minding your own business until a column of tanks roll by then getting a lift from a stranger on a quad bike to where you're needed. Or going on a one man mission to an uncontested zone and picking a fight with whoever is there

Waffleaber

It's on their refresh tariff which is essentially getting the phone and console on credit which you can pay off at any time and end the contract.

If you take off £17 line rental that works out at £930 for a Z1 (rrp £600, £~450 on amazon) and PS4 bundle (about £440) so it's not, y'know, awful.

Rezzed 2013: Eurogamer's Game of the Show

Waffleaber

Went on Sunday and had a blast. Total War and Company of Heroes 2 are looking as good as I hoped, Project Zomboid and Prison Architect are both coming along nicely and the board games were great (no idea what was going on at the Dobble table but from the noise they were enjoying themselves!).

Couldn't pick a personal game of the show but my surprise of the show was There Shall Be Lancing in The Leftfield Collection, a great two player deathmatch game with jetpacks, lances and a great skill based risk/reward combat system and "just one more rematch" feel to it.

Tomb Raider review

Waffleaber

The review isn't that negative, there are only really two critisisms in the whole review.

An unmemorable supporting cast and that the game would have been better if the immersion breaking elements had been simplified or left out all together (true there are lots of incidences of this listed in the review but it's still only one complaint.)

Almost every other element is spoken of highly but perhaps not with the amount of superlatives we expect from games reviews nowadays.

For my money the review text and score match up almost perfectly.

Paradox are one of my favourite publishers at the moment, mainly for their track record of publishing games which are interesting and different (even if they aren't necessarily great) but this is being developed by Cyanide Studios so you'd be better off looking at their output (although it is, as you say,"less than stellar")

The game does sound very interesting but as the article mentions an hour hands on time doesn't sound like anywhere near long enough to draw a full opinion.

Saturday Soapbox: Buy-to-let gaming

Waffleaber

The problem is it isn't just the big guns going down this route.

I recently bought Knights of Pen & Paper off the back of some positive reviews and good word of mouth. Now the game itself is great fun and well worth the £1.22 but there is still a "buy gold" button on screen at all times.

You can earn gold just fine through normal play and I haven't personally had to grind yet but buying gold can definately give you an advantage, for instance it costs 75 gold for the blacksmith to upgrade your items but you have to wait real time (8 hours to start with) for him to finish and it isn't even a certainty he will succeed in upgrading your item. By using 150 gold you can skip this time so someone paying for 10,000 gold can upgrade their items a lot quicker than someone grinding.

This is exactly the kind of mechanic the article is talking about but I haven't seen it mentioned in any reviews of the game. Is it more excusable because of the low price point? That doesn't apply to Final Fantasy in the article. Is it because it's better implimented? Probably, but not to mention it at all excuses this behaviour in other games.

As I said I am enjoying the game but I am waiting for, or expecting, a toll booth to appear which may never appear but if this mechanic is in the game it must have infuenced the design somewhere along the line.

The only DLC I've ever downloaded was the Arcade Edition for Super Street Fighter IV as it added plenty to the original.

By and large though it just seems like DLC is console gamers being charged for something PC gamers have been getting free for years and in some cases the free community designed maps and mods shame their professionaly designed paid for downloadable bretheren.
