I think it's far simpler. There are just more games now, if you include indie stuff. They generally last a lot longer too. More games, means less of the pie for each individual game.

Whenever a game is art, it usually stops being a game. Also, it seems the main reason you have to think of games as something more than a hobby is that you've built a life around it, both personally and professionally.

Kojima has a history of manipulating the media to integrate with the theme of his stories, and showing how easy it is for people to believe what they are told. Part of the theme of mgsv seems to be big boss being erased and forgotten, so who knows if him doing this is all part of some meta troll/story device.
