"It's less to do with specs and more to do with what you do with those specs"

Pynchon

They're pulling all sorts of BS out to cover their weaknesses - found this 'gem' amongst a bazillion XO articles on Polygon today:

At the moment, the Xbox One console will work with TVs with a resolution of up to 4k, but it's unlikely that any Xbox One games will work at that resolution any time soon. Using the previously mentioned cloud features, Microsoft told Polygon, the console can be upgraded in the future to support greater resolutions.

"We have the ability to upgrade the console and leverage its power through the dedicated servers," Pollington said. "There is no reason why there isn't the ability to enable better resolution down the track."

Eurogamer's Games of the Generation: The top 50

Pynchon

Odd that DayZ is on here as its a PC game and I thought 'generations' were all about the locked down hardware of consoles, PC being outside that crude definition?

And if you're going to somewhat spuriously include PC, no mention of any mobile titles despite that platform carving a massive gouge wound into traditional handheld sales? There have been some gems amongst the chaff on mobile despite the knee-jerk hate the market gets from 'hardcore' gamers.

But I guess all I needed to see the true purpose of this list was the childish box invoking 'who's won this generation' console war stupidity.

EA denies it's rushing Titanfall development

Pynchon

Eurogamer understands internally Microsoft was delighted to learn of Titanfall's March 2014 release date - having previously thought it might have been delayed to the summer.
Hmm. Or is it possible Microsoft nudged EA to push this forward as much as possible to boost XOne sales, given the (IMO) crazy over-hype in the games press about this title?

Questing for heroism in MMOs

Pynchon

It sounds like what's being said is pretty much my experience of MMO's. The big problem isn't the game so much, although a partly procedurally generated world that potentially goes on forever is very enticing.

The problem it seems to me is the people.

1. Everyone is potentially some form of uber-powered superhero aside from a few NPC's, which feels to me utterly ridiculous.

2. Good luck getting any kind of real ambience going with any, y'know, role-playing? It's all abbreviations on chat that can be read anywhere.

3. Finding a stunning new location that the dev's clearly laboured on is sorta ruined when it's full of 20 people bunny hopping around with name tags like xxxAR53BISCU1Txxx floating over their heads.

So yeah, I guess for me the MMO part really fucks up the RPG part.

Maybe allow you to instance the entire world and let you invite as many of your friends into it as you want so you can have a real RPG experience, and those who just want to have their fun and fanny about can do their thing is the answer, because frankly I think the issue by and large is Hell is other people.

Nintendo announces line-up for Eurogamer Expo

Pynchon

@Sicho I agree. The Assassin's Creed franchise is ridiculously over exploited and whisper it, mostly pretty rubbish.

Doesn't make me feel any different about Mario etc.

And hey, if you're still cool with Nintendo games that's fine and all power to ya. Godspeed.

It's just my stupid opinion having played a ton of them in the past that I'm done paying money to them for what I feel are mostly weaker versions of the same game.

I can actually, y'know, play Super Mario Kart or Super Mario Land or Mario 64 or Link to the Past and know they're still IMO better than the modern versions they're selling.

@7M7

And yet what do the other platform holders have on offer? Another Killzone? Another Forza? More Battlefield, GTA, FIFA, COD...
I agree, some of those have pretty much got to the point of stagnation too.

But arguably Nintendo are actually worse than all of those, as they've been iterating on the same damn games longer than any of the ones you mention existed.

They have, rather erratically at times, managed to keep quality generally high but that doesn't detract from my point that I have played those damn games before, often when they were truly fresh and quite a bit better, as they didn't have superfluous stuff crammed in for the sake of trying to make it seem new.

I dunno, I kinda feel like they're some hideous form of nostalgia vampire now.

When people are clamouring for Mario Kart 8 (8!), a series that IMO hasn't really been bettered since the original, you have to wonder.

And it's not like they have a great track record of successful new franchises really is it? Their core games are based on stuff that originated, what, 20-30 years ago? And they're still mucking about occasionally releasing those to Virtual Console or whatever it's called now.

Frankly? I fucking loved my SNES. Loved it and it's games more than any other console. Which makes me sad to see this bullshit.

It's not a popular opinion I'm aware, but I think they could do so much better than this 'Hey here's another Mario and Zelda, we know you guys will buy them forever and ever and ever' and 'Hey what do you think of our new hardware with touch screens that would disgrace a cheap smart phone'?

I kinda like the ad. It reflects a particular mindset of parts of the gaming community pretty accurately I reckon.

If they'd made a half-decent, surprise hit console it might have resonated pretty successfully, which makes me wonder if they have no clue they're failing (unlikely) or if they commissioned it before the console launch and it's taken all this time to be made (very likely).
