From Final Fantasy 12 to Uncharted 3: exploring gaming's Orientalist fantasies

NewYork

Fascinating article from a well-informed, well-qualified writer.

It would of course be interesting (and much needed) to read a Japanese writer's perspective on the FFXII example. Or an east-Asian perspective on Orientalism in games and what it means to them.

Which is to say, I hope with all this highlighting of problematic elements in gaming, and of games that we are "a bit" calling racist, we get to hear the voices of those impacted, or those part of the culture being taken to task. EG clearly has good intentions so I look forward to seeing that reflected in the diversity of voices it promotes.

Secret of Mana's 3D remake is good fun - but won't impress retro purists

NewYork

The art style I'm not so into, but I hope this does well to encourage more games of this budget. Not every RPG needs to be a grand scope detailed 3D world with a risky budget and prolonged development time attached. It would be good to show the market exists for smaller scale efforts like this, that still come from big publishers; like I am Setsuna or FFXV Pocket Edition or even the DS port of FFIV which used simple but stylish 3D graphics.

I especially think of Square-Enix's grand bombastic plans to remake FFVII as a cutting-edge modern looking game, with all the risk and development hell that this carries. It's good to show there's room for this kind of remake, too.

The big interview: the Gambling Commission on loot boxes

NewYork

All the comments saying "fair enough, have loot boxes in free-to-play" make me feel there's two separate arguments against loot boxes and they're getting conflated.

There's being against loot boxes because they ruin the experience of a game, making us feel like the game is just after our money rather than trying to entertain us or make an artistic statement.

And then there's being against loot boxes because of concerns about addiction and exploitation of vulnerable people.

And some will be against loot boxes for both reasons, but the solutions are different. I personally am against loot boxes from a "don't ruin my game" standpoint, but that doesn't require a regulatory body to intervene.

As far as protecting people goes, I am generally against moves that give the government more power over what can and cant be included in art. I think warnings such as seen in the Google Play Store would be useful, e.g. "This game includes additional in-game purchases", "This game includes options to pay to facilitate progress", "Players who do not pay may experience slower progress", "This game includes options to pay to obtain competitive advantage", "Players who do not pay may experience competitive disadvantage" and then encourage families to be responsible in monitoring their children's gaming activity.

Detroit: Become Human under fire for controversial domestic abuse scene

NewYork

I really doubt that David Cage will handle this well, and I don't rate him as a storyteller or as a particularly sensitive person. I'll probably give this game a skip like everything that came after Heavy Rain.

But I do worry that this game will be used as a scapegoat to curb and censor artistic expression. Statements like "Domestic violence is not a game and this simply trivialises it" worries me, because what kind of violence DOES Damian Collins find appropriate for a game and where does he draw the line, and how long before some vague and easily exploited obscenity act is brought in on the back of this?

Clicker Heroes studio abandons upcoming sequel's free-to-play model for "ethical reasons"

NewYork

Good, from the point of view that I like full-priced games without F2P mechanics.

But I don't know about this "players who are in denial of their addiction" remark. I think people should be allowed to spend as they wish without their motives being questioned. The majority of people who play F2P games don't spend a single penny, and what harm if some choose to, even in large amounts. We've seen even in that recent EG article that they can indeed be well-off people with money to spare.

I do think there's an issue of vulnerable people getting pulled into spending more than they can afford, but there has to be a better way of addressing this issue. Alcohol and gambling are legal despite their potential for being misused and causing addiction. Now views on whether they should be legal may vary but I ask what difference there is between those and F2P microtransactions being intended for responsible use.

And sure, that's a matter of legislation while this is a matter of a private company deciding they don't want to be involved with it, but even then their view of the problem and its solution seems to be narrow.

Unless they have some data on how F2P microtransactions affect people that can justify it. But if it's a case of "We refuse to sell a product if even one person ends up misusing it," well, you can see where that goes.

Watch: Blizzcon reacts to Overwatch's sexism problem

NewYork

I can't see how you could begin to deal with this culture from within the game chat itself. If you're a male teen playing this and you are uncomfortable with the sexism you hear, what is the upshot of speaking out against it compared to all the negative attention it brings? The reality is nobody wants to rock the boat and turn a game into an argument between teens about gender/bullying.

In an ideal world of course you'd say "Any negative attention associated with speaking out against sexism is nothing compared to being a victim of sexism in the first place", and that's true, but pragmatically I just don't feel that trying to teach sexists how to be civil during an Overwatch game is going to be very productive for anyone.

Blizzard can say all they want about it but the target audience of sexists will likely be deaf to it. It's more down to what society teaches males about respecting women, and that's from school, across media, from family, and, importantly, about kids growing up in a world where gender inequality within societal structure doesn't actually exist.

Which could take generations to turn around. Short term, the only thing that'll work is harsh penalties for this kind of behaviour, and that's down to Blizzard enforcing it. Which sounds about right: the onus shouldn't be on decent players to keep a community civil, it should be down to the company that runs it and makes money off it - and that means Blizzard need to care earnestly about it.

How I programmed Final Fantasy 12 to help me meet an impossible deadline

NewYork

I love the gambit system of FFXII. It's such a shame later games didn't take the concept further. There's some times I wish I could set even more nuanced gambits, with more "and if" and "but not if" conditions.

I never understood the "but the game plays itself" detractors, as though micro-managing each character's action turn-by-turn for every single fight would be anywhere near as fun as tinkering with strategies and setting gameplans for big fights, spotting flaws in your system and fixing them as you go, and even making a party that can cope with changes in scenario.

You can still dip in and control individual actions when you need to order particular off-script actions, but what fun would there be in churning out the more obvious by-the-book actions? On the whole, isn't the most fun part of any turn-based RPGs gearing up your characters to survive, and finding and setting up a formula that works*?

A translator's tale: Inside the building of Final Fantasy 12's Ivalice

@Daryoon FFXV has good translation, it's just that the world created works better with a common modern American English language. But if you look at characters from the Empire, Ardyn in particular, the translators still get to have their fun with the grand theatrical. Ardyn's actor is clearly hamming it up but he is fantastic in the role and is given some great material to work with.

The dialogue in FFXII is an absolute gem. I enjoy cutscenes in any FF but it's FFXII which makes me delight in the language used. Fran and Balthier, as noted in the article, light up any scene they are in and it's thanks to the lines they are given as much as their actual characters.

Also glad character motivation is mentioned, because again it's FFXII that truly gives a sense of an ensemble cast, where you get a sense that this is not a group of heroes with a singular goal, but a mishmash of people thrown together with complex allegiances and separate paths, and it's a joy to watch it play out.

It's why I like the characters of Vaan and Penelo, because they represent us, the player, the audience, in fact, getting to soak in the play that is unfolding around them.

That's not to say that other JRPGs are inferior, but you can tell by the way that their scenes are often referred to as "skits" that they are meant to be enjoyed on a different level to the likes of Vagrant Story and FFXII, which feel far closer to English theatre.

Castlevania's Netflix show is weird and flawed but it totally works

NewYork

It was certainly competent. I don't think anyone will say the show is an utter disgrace.

They over-rushed the final catacombs sequence, so coming upon Alucard felt very chance-y and unearned.

Yes there's some good action sequences but there's a lot of scenes with stationary characters engaged in lengthy dialogue which felt heavy on exposition and wanting to hammer home their good/evil alignments. There's certainly a place for that but it felt unbalanced.

Overall if they'd had more space for the plot to breathe, the pacing could've been so much better. We really needed a good few hours with Trevor and Sypha and the village's struggles before throwing Alucard into the mix.

NewYork

We're probably heading towards a cellphone structure of incremental updates, where new games will be compatible with the last few year's models (e.g. 'Compatible with PS4 Series 2016 and later').

What point would there be of a "generational leap" when the Pro and X would be cheaper by then, at which point Sony and MS could rebrand those as the base consoles and bring out new incremental updates as the new flagships, and continue this conveyor belt, slowly dropping support for the oldest machines in the line.
