Darkwood developer releases its own game on Pirate Bay

@el_pollo_diablo Judging from the comments here (like"I didn't know about this game but I'll buy it") I hardly think they have slashed their own tires.

Makes me think of what William Gibson said when asked how he felt about his books appearing on pirate websites: "Piracy is a tax on being famous", meaning because his work was worthwhile it is also made available to people who could not (or even would not) pay for it. Redistribution of cultural wealth and such things.

Congratulations to the developer for having the guts to do this and letting humanity reign above greed.

Keep an eye on Unworthy - I played the alpha and it has a very good Dark Souls vibe to it (plus references; there's one boss that looks like a blacksmith :))

Valve's missing Link

LaundroMat

I have been testing Steam streaming over Ethernet and it's not been very satisfactory yet. I don't want to slam the service, but I just wonder whether the Link could somehow make the guarantee that the streaming will be (close to) perfect.

Or, better not actually. I'm pretty sure I lost a year in school due to F1GP.

Codies cagey on SWOS date

LaundroMat

SWOS most probably was written using a mixture of 68k ASM and C. The Amiga had specialised chips for audio & video, so at least all of the graphics code has to be rewritten entirely.

When Codemasters say the code has not been changed, I think they mean the gameplay algorithms (ball physics, players positions, etc) haven't been altered.

Also, introducing net code into the game doesn't just mean wrapping a few functions around the original code. Good online code is an integral part of the game code, not just a wrapper function.

There's a very clear analogy with the movie business. Somewhere in the 70s someone said that the movie industry is no longer an industry (you make something and want to sell it as much as possible), but a business (a finance-driven enterprise).

That must hurt :(
I really don't understand that games like these are released at all. Surely someone there must've felt this game wasn't actually any good at all.

(Oh, and yay for the intro paragraph. Verhoeven's desillusion with the USA + SF = movie heaven. Every time.)

Prospective sales up with 150.000 thanks to Blerk's innovative suggestion.

LaundroMat

The maths (as seen during a top secret powerpoint presentation):
Film license impulse buyers = 550.000
Blerk = 1
Blerk followers = 0,5 (max)
Total: 549.998,5

Preliminary result: release King Kong and drag Blerk in it too by making a vague promise that if KK sells well, we'll think of a BG&E sequel.

Final result:
550.000 KK sales
1,5 assured sales of BG&E 2

Executive boardroom decision:
Do not start work on BG&E 2 yet, not enough prospective sales.

Viacom considering in-game advertising

LaundroMat

This is an old discussion. Zool had Chubba Chups (or whatever they're called), Amiga Power frequently fumed about advertising in games, and I even remember WEC Le Mans (on the CPC) having true-to-life (and paid for) advertisements (for BP).

It's the same as in the movies: if it's too obvious, I'll hate the movie/game for it. If not, no problem.

Sierra hard-hit as VU Games axes 350 jobs

LaundroMat

Vivendi originally was a company providing commodities such as water to the masses. Some clown thought the company should "create synergies" with the media and bought Universal, together with loads of other (new) media companies.

Needless to say, the company's still short on cash (it had loads before), its stock is worthless and its former chairman has been arrested. Messier is the epitome of the useless money-burning corporate twats we hear more and more of.

Ofcourse, he doesn't get any poorer of it.
