Civilian massacring game Hatred courts controversy, gets it

Gillespionage

I really don't like this. Mass shootings are a pretty big problem in the states and I really don't think that trivializing the situation helps the problem or a lot of peoples views of video game culture.

The executions depicted in this trailer are horrific. I know that they are digital characters and not real people but it really does not sit well with me.
I have been asking myself whether it is a problem that I have been enjoying Shadow of Mordor so much because of the graphic ways in which you slaughter Orc and Uruks. It's so graphic that it seems comical and satisfying.
The difference between slaughtering orcs and executing civilians is that there is a lore and story behind the orcs that labels them as inherently evil, and the civilians are innocent people just going about their lives.
I feel kind of bad for enjoying killing the orcs so much.

But ultimately, Middle Earth is a Fantasy environment and Hatred is trivializing something that is a serious problem in the real world.
They are not putting any reasons behind why you as a player would be going out to kills as many people as you can. It's purely for fun which is utterly distasteful.

This is one of the main reasons I bought a WiiU with Mario Kart. So I could use all these controllers I've been lugging round with me since 1937.

GAME to shut down Xbox-only London store

Gillespionage

I work 2mins from Boxpark and all of the shops there seem empty all the time.
I have bought a pair of Vans from the Vans shop and I know people who have used the Moo shop. The food places upstairs are pretty good too.
I never understood why they would put a GAME there. Even if it weren't Xbox exclusive, it seems a weird place. Everyone round here seems to want to buy clothes or eat, not buy Xbox goods.

The whole thing can be kind of weird though. Such small shops make it all seem awkward. You go in for a poke around and the fact it's so small and the attendant is just sat there. They probably have so little to do that they ask you immediately if they can help.
It might just be me, but that puts me off going into those places. I'm not one for audience participation :D haha

Played this at Rezzed and had a nice chat with the Devs. It's a really cool game with tons of potential.
I said to them at the time that I think it could be really really big, but the art really does hold it back from the market, aside from the odd curious indie enthusiast.

The puzzles in the levels I played were really cool and left you feeling pretty chuffed with yourself after figuring it out and pulling it off :)

Hearthstone is absolutely amazing. I'd advise anyone about to start developing a new game to play it. Wonderful pacing and encourages you to earn your new cards as opposed to buying them. I'd gladly pay money for the game as it's so well made.

It's made in Unity too! Which just goes to show what's possible in the engine and should serve as a quality bar for indie devs to head toward. Especially as a free piece of software :)

PlayStation 4 Press Conference Live Report

Hotline Miami for Vita and PS3 this spring

Gillespionage

@WillyWongler I agree that it is good. After the first chapter I felt totally comfortable with it. I just enjoyed how quick the keyboard and mouse is more.
I did find with the controller that looking around as you would with the shift key was super sensitive on the controller. That combined with having to click the stick to lock onto an enemy was a bit clunky. It may well have been addressed by now though mind.
Seeing as it's a port specifically for the Vita though, I'm sure the controls will have been picked over with a fine tooth comb :)

This is great news!

I'll be excited to see whether the controls will change the gameplay much. I had a go playing it with a 360 controller and it was pretty good. nowhere near as responsive as a mouse and keyboard though :S

I loved it though, and I love the devs. So I will probably pick it up AGAIN!

Radio the Universe is one slick looking retro sci-fi action RPG

Gillespionage

@rubicante Also, you are right. Pixel art IS a scene. Just as Manga and Anime are scenes. But is are comic or film fans complaining about them clogging up with hobby?
0 0

Gillespionage

@rubicante I was just referring to 3D as it is what some people would expect modern or simply "not reto" games to look like.
I've not played They Bleed Pixels, but I have seen some of it. The truth is that every game will have art work that needs more time than others. Promotional or cut scene art work often needs more time than in game sprites. So if some of the images look a little different from the rest of the gameplay in TBP it might be because of that. I think it is quicker to draw in flash than make a pixel title screen or logo. The header of the games website is just that.

I'm not saying that lack of time and money is an excuse for doing pixel art. But I think it is sometimes the case.

Pixel art is considered retro but do people consider painting retro? originally painting was mostly used to capture a scene. Once the camera was invented painting was free to become more expressive etc etc.
If someone was to draw a life model in charcoal, you wouldn't say to them "Wow that's so retro. The way forward is drawing digitally on a Wacom". So it really bugs me that pixel art is pigeon holed like this.

As a video game artist myself, I spend a lot of time in both 3D and 2D. What draws me to pixel art is the break from what I do. The simplicity and depth that it can offer without all the technical steps than can bog an artist down in other mediums.

If people don't like it then that's fair enough. But I do as do plenty of others

Gillespionage

@rubicante I disagree that it is over used to simply fit into a scene. I think it often comes down to time and money constraints. Not every dev can afford to employ enough people to make a full 3D game or even buy the license required to release one. The devs may also have little to no art skills at their disposal, so learning to draw higher detailed vector sprites or work in 3D is a daunting prospect. It may be a lot easier for someone to make some sprites in their spare time instead.
Spelunky for example was originally made in Game Maker as more of a hobby project. I know first hand that how much of a difference and more satisfying it can be to have a quickly drawn pixel character instead of a red block as a player when mucking around in Game Maker.
For some people it is the excitement of the game mechanics over the visuals that comes first.
But as I said, it's often time and money constraints. Once Derek Yu had become pals with Microsoft, he could afford to take the risk on more development time for both visuals and mechanical tweaks.
You need only watch Indie Game the movie to see how stretched these full time indie devs are. Poor old Phil Fish even shoves his middle finger up you he's so frustrated about it.

As for Hotline Miami. I read somewhere that Cactus was asked why they were making it in Game Maker and his reply was because he also wanted a social life.

I think that often 3D indie games can look dull or very similar to a default engine scene. Unreal or Unity for example. Because often devs do not have the resources to make it as gorgeous as they'd like. Though sometimes they can make it work for them. For example more abstract looking games like Thomas Was Alone and Super Hexagon. Do either of these sit under the same umbrella as the same old same old indie scene? Do they upset people as much? I'm sure a lot of people would immediately dismiss them as crap and old looking. But both have been critically acclaimed and widely enjoyed

p.s. I think the game looks pretty cool. Though I'd like to maybe hear more of any kind of narrative. It doesn't look like it's a short stage puzzler/brawler so it'd be cool to know what you are fighting/running for. Even if it's a setting sun on the horizon.

@Timotei Pixel art is a style and not necessarily something that is trying to be retro. People like it. I personally like it.
To me it leaves more to the imagination and adds a bit mystery to a game. I doubt Sword & Sorcery would be as nice an experience if it had high poly models and all kinds of shaders. I realise ofcourse that Journey is an absolutely beautiful 3D game, with a similar ambience. But it comes down to how the creators wanted to players feel.
Pixel art may not mean the same to someone who didn't grow up playing older games, but I'm sure a lot of them can appreciate it for what it is. Art.

As for gameplay. All of the games you list I think have been very original. Though FTL is relatively similar to other management games, it has still been beautifully put together and is stupidly addictive.
I think the followings and sales of all of them prove that they aren't simply crappy looking games with weird bogus gimmicks.
