Why From Software's worst game is worth learning from

Carbon_Altered

I flippin' PRE-ORDERED this game, I was that excited about it. Got some free fancy pants armour DLC for my troubles.

Then I tried to set it up. Got my chair in front of the Kinnect and the point in the article about chair arms getting in the way was spot on. Got it going eventually, but it was sooooooooooooooooooo fiddly.

Almost lost it on a level I had to crawl out of the mech to do something or other, but the game never made it clear that I was supposed to be ducking down. Just a bit of direction from the UI would have made it so much less painful.

Just too much hard work to get it working right. Then the actual gameplay/graphics was crap on top of that. Mech Warrior back in the day was more involving.

A a geography crossword game sounds like the sort of thing you produce in gamedev story after you've exhausted all the vaguelly exciting sounding genres / combinations.

And the "write for free" argument gets really messed up in this piece, not sure if he's misquoted or what?

Still wish him luck for all the fond memories though

Er, is this the same game that there was a diary of some Eurogamer guy playing a while back (not the Day Z one, or Guild Wars, the other one)? Or was that DOTA? Or is DOTA the genre and LOL the game?

Am so confused. Halp.

@jonbwfc you're still not getting my initial point, so I apologise if I've phrased it badly.

It's not to do with having kids, it's to do with one generation struggling to "get" the activities of the next generation.

In this thread it is clear that people of our generation (say 25 to 35) really don't understand why this guy is so popular. My argument is that just because we don't get it, that is not a reason to belittle the kids that do seem to enjoy his work.

It's an inter-generational thing, just like when we ourselves were kids and the generation above us didn't get, and frequently criticised as a result, the stuff we liked.

The circle of life (and I make no apologies for putting the song of the same name in your head)

All you people moaning about not seeing the point in this, cast your minds back to when you were a kid. Remember that thing that you're mum or dad or older sibling had a go at you for liking because they didn't themselves understand it? Maybe computer games? Or ninja turtles?

That is you now, that is

Thing is, who are we to criticise others for liking these sort of videos just because we don't get them ourselves? No one is getting hurt, and millions of people seem to enjoy it if the subscriber numbers are anything to go by. Let them be.

@CamberGreber - I'm with you on slow v fast zombies in general, but think that technoligical limits will preclude slow zombies in open world sandboxes for the time being. Games just can't handle the volume of slow zombies you'd need to make them in any way threatening.

These stats do seem to make much of the game development process pointless though, if the majority or never going to see the end part of the game.

Makes me wonder why we aren't seeing more games released in episode format? Because they want as much money up front as possible?

Given that I'm neither a student or unemployed I rarely finish games these days and so shorter games, or games broken down into parts would appeal.

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor Review

Carbon_Altered

@prettyboytim - I'm playing it too, where you up to? The controls are ok, but don't you think some of the actual game mechanics are a bit crap? You done the level where you have to spot some enemies then give a signal, but the game doesn't actually tell you what the signal is? Stuff like that irritates.

@dogmanstaruk - "From the Kinect tracking picture in the corner I can clearly see my gestures are correct."

Yeah, kinect is working fine (same applies to me) but the game's use of kinect isn't great. That was why in the forum thread I was trying to draw a distinction between the game and the technology.

I'm up to mission 6 at the moment, so it is obviously working for me to some degree. There are annoyances, yes, and it is a pretty average game. Just not completely broken as a lot of overly dramatic people/reviewers are claiming.
5 1

Carbon_Altered

@dogmanstaruk - it's not broken, it's just not very good. 5/10 seems about right to me having played it, there are some decent aspects to it, but too many frustrations for it to score higher.

I'm desperate for some slow mech action, so will be all over this. But the Steel Battalion mechs just look a bit, well, wrong to me. Can't see what advantage they have over normal tanks? Where are the 15 story high behemoths?

Also, yay for a potentially decent hardcore kinnect game. Mine currently just gets used for voice activated remote control (which is pretty awesome. XBOX PAUSE. XBOX PLAY NEXT EPISODE. XBOX, MAKE ME A CUP OF TEA. Well, one can hope for next gen...)

Choose Your Own Adventure

Was it Steve Jackson or Ian Livingstone that went on to work in the computer gaming industry? Fairly sure one of them is quite a big player now, but I could have miss-remembered. These books are certainly the forerunners of modern RPGs - their decline is closely corelated to the rise of home gaming. However, I'm still to find a game that gave me the shivers that reading City of Thieves gave me about 20 or 25 years ago. I guess it could well be an age thing, but I'm still not sure modern games have the atmoshpere on a par with some of these books yet.

Two points to make:
1) There are plenty of instances of Eurogamer giving crappy review scores to games with high advertising on the site - I don't think the "paid for" review argument is backed by any real evidence
2) The claims the Joystiq guy didn't play for very long - isn't this a claim Eurogamer faced not too long back but it turned out the review had just played it under different loggins? Until Joystiq are allowed to give their side, I don't think we can slag them off, yet.

Retrospective: Red Baron

Carbon_Altered

I just missed this - my parents PC at the time wasn't up to it, but I loved games like it. It also captures what is missing in so many of today's games - immersion. It is not all about the hero, but needs to wider picture to make it totally believable. I used to love Aces of the Deep, which in many ways was similar to this (albeit in s submarine) as you really felt that you were risking your life as part of a wider war effort. The CODs and the like of today are too much focussed on you being the all action hero, carrying the day, when I think it is much more involving being a cog in a wider machine. you can still be a hero, but it is not all about you.

Poorly written review in my opinion - far too fluffy, like the author was trying to justify the English degree and creative writing course. As I've mentioned on the forum thread, when defending, don't just concentrate on the man with the ball. Make sure you mark all the attacking players he may pass to (A button on them) then when the pass is made, hold down Z and the player marking the pass recipient will step forward and try to intercept the ball. Timing is critical, but defending isn't as random as it first appears.
