Witcher Geralt will appear in another game this year and it's probably Soulcalibur 6

Beetroot_Bertie

He'd be a great fit for Soul Calibur 6. It can't be worse than Yoda after all. It still baffles me that they shoe-horned Yoda into SCIV when any normal height Jedi or Sith would have worked better - Maul would have be awesome.

Wow. Way better than the blunt nail clippers I usually get.

I like how the emergency spaces on 17, 18 and 19 don't even colour correspond with the spaces on 40, 41 and 42 that send you back there.

Just seen space 25 "Return to Star". Pretty deep and existential. /feels sad.

I'm glad he mentioned the fast responsiveness of SC2 in the video. The first 2 games felt (at least with my nostalgic goggles on) snappy and responsive. I've not played SC3 at all or SC5 much but SC4 felt kinda 'spongy' to me, just not quite right. I'd rather play SC2 HD than 4, it still looks OK enough to my eyes.

I'd be really happy if this new one played more like the first 2 (mandatory inclusion of the missions/edge master stuff of course).

Some of the effects seem a bit much though. The masses of floor blocks flying up and then disappearing is a bit OTT.

The history of bleem!

Beetroot_Bertie

Great read. I'm feeling all Dreamcast nostalgic with the news of Soul Calibur 6 revisiting the period of the first game. Might have to bust out the beige noisemonger over Christmas. I remember reading about Bleem in Dreamcast magazines at the time but don't recall ever seeing any discs at retail. Did the Psychomantis controller thing still work in the same way in MGS?

Xbox Live Indie Games gets stay of execution

Shame to see it go although this brief extension is nice to hear. For me it is/was a welcome addition for the 360 and I enjoyed the 'pocket money' feel of it as it reminded me of going out with a few quid as a lad to get a 1.99 cassette from a newsagent or shop in town.

I've had a loads of fun with Little Racers Street (amongst others) and my niece and nephew are currently enjoying Total Miner: Forge - I was too tight to buy Minecraft :).

I've ended up getting over a dozen titles over the last month or so, knowing that's it's closing down. Finding 'Protect Me Knight' was a pain though - I ended up using a link to the marketplace and still haven't managed to find it via the dashboard.

I don't know about anyone else, but every gen there's certain games I wish I could play but with current gen graphics. No gameplay changes or anything like that, just the graphical update and I'd be happy. SoulCalibur is one of those for me. Smashing game.

Why Unreal deserves to be remembered alongside Half-Life

Beetroot_Bertie

I enjoyed this game a lot. I had the Mac port of the game and at the time it was quite a big deal to me, partly because there weren't that many big name Mac games around and partly because it looked so bloomin' lovely. Coming from the rather claustrophobic Quake (amazing soundtrack from Trent Reznor), it was a breath of fresh air (almost literally when you exited the ship to reveal the planet) with some lovely hues and lighting and open areas, not to mention the nibbling fish in the pond.

I had the lowest recommended spec Mac at the time and had to run it at really lo-res with line skipping on but it still had me totally captivated with my one button mouse :).

The Skaarj warriors were cool too - nimble characters that to me set the mould for how enemy AI would/could develop. I can't help feeling that they maybe influenced Bungie for the enemy behavior that they developed in Halo, particularly with the Elites.

Contra 3 retrospective

Beetroot_Bertie

Such a wonderful game that still plays well today. It showed off the snes' capabilities so well. Fast, fluid and most of the time you felt the errors were yours rather than the game being cheap (at least that's how I remember it - it might be rose tinted). I sunk plenty of time into the snes version at the time and I think it's games like this that really get me nostalgic. Thanks for the retrospective.

The life of a porting house

Beetroot_Bertie

Interesting read. It's a shame Feral declined to give interviews as it would have been nice to hear a bit more about this from their perspective.

I've long since given up on the Mac as a gaming platform (and turned to consoles) but have very fond memories of playing Quake, Riven, The Last Express and Unreal. Not to forget enjoyable Quake III Arena matches over LAN during lunch at a previous employers :)

If I was wearing a hat, I'd take it off for these porters, doing what they can to bring gaming to Macs and the still small market share that it occupies.

It's good to see Mac ports on GOG too.

I think in some way that's why I don't mind scores at the end of reviews. I can skip to the end see if it's generally regarded highly or not and then enjoy a game or story without feeling I know what's coming.

I really would have loved to have played Fez without knowing anything at all, just for the 3D mechanic to leave me in awe :)

Digital Foundry vs. 4K gaming

Beetroot_Bertie

It all seems a bit excessive to me, certainly for home use, but I guess they've got to try and sell us something to prevent stagnation. I would imagine a 1080p standard will be a sweet spot for most and is more than adequate for me personally.

It's not really been mentioned here but does anyone know what kind of impact a 4K output would have on CPU/GPU load, heat dissipation and power consumption? I think these issues are only going to be increasingly more important as time passes.

Great read! I recall having one friend at school who was so in love with his speccy +2 that he quite seriously tried to convince me that it was better that an Amiga :)

As an Acorn Electron user, I was a second class citizen and didn't get all the cool games everyone else was enjoying. The 'Star Wars' port was shocking, with a really small frame rate, blocky mode 2 graphics and took ages to load but had an impressive loading screen IIRC. Needless to say, I played it loads :)
