Wolfenstein 2 and the anatomy of a blockbuster hero

Akhrati

Wolfenstein has one of the most thoughtful examinations of disability in gaming as of late. Never related more to a hero, as a wheelchair user.

Be sure to check in on your friends who you think are struggling, tell them you love them. Look after your disabled friends, let them know you care about them.

Also, Automata sold out on Amazon before midday. I hope this is indicative of a well-deserved hit for Taro and everybody on the team!

Overwatch game director talks diversity, inclusivity and Tracer's sexuality

Akhrati

@MrTummyGiggles Literally when you say that people who aren't white or straight shouldn't be afraid of being 'not normal', it's just... what -is- normal? What is the baseline definition?

I'm just trying to wrap my head around how you're trying to define this and how we would eliminate the need for diversity as it's being communicated in the video and within the context of media.
1 0

Akhrati

@MrTummyGiggles Hey, I wasn't projecting your race/orientation. It's just that it is our 'default' in the gaming industry and in the wider western media culture and when someone says 'normal' that seems to be what you're getting at when you are taking an issue with the semantics of diversity. Please @ me next time instead of taking a dig. :)
1 0

Akhrati

@MrTummyGiggles Or rather, it's the dominant cultural identity where we may be but not so much everywhere. It's expected that 'normal' to us in Western Europe (assumedly, since this is Eurogamer) is somebody white, but what about in other places?

It's a matter of perspective, I suppose, but when video games are such a universal language and played so widely, why not have them reflect their players?
8 0

Akhrati

@MrTummyGiggles Not coming for you here, but your implication is that 'normal' means 'white and straight', which would mean that being of any other ethnic group or sexuality is 'not normal'. Bit of a fucked way to look at it, considering that whiteness is not a universal constant.

Xbox One's upcoming copilot feature will let two players share one controller

Akhrati

I just upgraded from the launch XBO to the Elite over Christmas, while they were cheap, thanks to the controller. My hand function has degenerated considerably over the last few years and the paddles have let me really enjoy games again without anywhere near as much physical pain.

This feature looks amazing! I still can't button mash, but thankfully that seems to have been phased out of most games as accessibility has become more widely considered in the design process. I'm really glad to know I can get some help if needs be.

It's just really sad that MS don't have the games I want any more, since the cancellation of Scalebound. If NieR Automata comes to XBO, I will happily buy it again.

@alexatkin It's really easy, just scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the little globe with your language and region next to it. Switch it there, then follow their instructions.

When you boot your XBO up, go to your system settings and change your region to Japan (don't need to change your language). Hit restart, look in your games to be downloaded and there it is. :)

Fatherhood isn't the shortcut to emotional complexity games wish it was

Akhrati

Thank you for the article, Nathan, a really interesting piece.

Have you played NIER? A bit wonky in places, yes, but a story of a father and his terminally ill daughter (in the West, at least) and the struggles of caring for her. He's absent for long stretches of time and is barely scraping by, chasing after everybody else's problems in return for a pittance. He's uneducated and a bit of a clod, but he loves her more than anything else.

It was wonderful seeing one of the hulking, macho men that games love so much being so gentle, patient and loving.

In his own words, "I'm just a big guy who kills things".

Final Fantasy 10/10-2 HD Remaster hits PC this week

Akhrati

This was where Nomura and Friends really started to lose it. Not a bad game by any means, but still shoddy in places, bizarre in others and creepy at times. That said, it's a hell of a journey and some of the character arcs are decent, but it set the corridor standard for XIII and the "You're going to sit through this story without any branches until we say you can" and getting the airship and actual exploratory travel at hour 20-30, depending on how fast you grind through it.

At least we'll get Wakka's scrunched-up racist face in absurd res.

The secrets of Dark Souls lore explained and explored

Akhrati

Gwyn's Firstborn talk, DaSIII spoilers.
Solaire is not Gwyn's Firstborn. It is the Nameless King in DaSIII, the boss of the secret area. He sided with the dragons and was cast out from Anor Londo. Shame, because the case for Solaire being the Firstborn was intensely compelling!

Nice article, though. Great read, more of this kind of game analysis please!

Solid Snake voice actor David Hayter throws shade at Hideo Kojima

Akhrati

For somebody who works in the entertainment industry, he doesn't seem to know a lot about it.

If you want to replace someone, they must not have done a satisfactory job with an aspect of the performance-- just because you have been there since the 90s does not mean you are entitled to a role.

There is no 'disrespect' in recasting. Just because we love somebody in a role does not mean that the creator does and while it -is- a shame (since a lot of us grew up with Hayter's role as Snake and it means a lot to many of us), it's just showbiz.

Not what people want to hear, but there you go!

Platinum have had these low difficulty modes in ALL of their games, but it never affected top-end play. Bayonetta 2 won an award last year for accessibility for disabled players and it didn't do anything to its technical depth! A little disappointed that they didn't get a mention at all, EG.

Project X Zone 2 review

Akhrati

Really looking forward to picking this up eventually. The first one suffered from the same drag, with so many characters that weren't recognisable dulling the thrill of Dante and Dmitri hanging out together.

But it was fun! And this one will be, too. The sheer thought of Phoenix Wright defending Goro Majima in court is one of the best 'what if'-s I've heard in ages.

This is the kind of thing that's difficult to heartily recommend to most people, but it has its charms.

That sprite work, though. Fantastic.

Where can Metal Gear go from here?

Akhrati

Rising was a perfect expansion of the Metal Gear universe. Beneath all the flashy gameplay is a really interesting view of the world after MGS4, looking at the implications of cyberware, the fallout of the war economy and how it's affected people.

That said, it was written in-house by Konami rather than Platinum.

Sometimes, things just need to be handed over to new people, to get a fresh perspective and see how it's influenced them over the years.

I'd way prefer Rising to continue. We have such an interesting direction to take Raiden in and so much more of the world to see!

Why I will never call video games a hobby

Akhrati

All of these grim comments are a fine illustration of why some people struggle to take games seriously.

The people who can't comprehend somebody having a different point of view to them. The people who think that academics are unimportant. The people who will bray into the internet that "omg stop taking it so seriously, it's just a hobby!!".

Call it your hobby if you wish, but don't try and shout down the people who are working to carry games higher.

Can WOW's next expansion bring its legion of lost heroes home?

Akhrati

I left for Final Fantasy XIV over a year and a half ago and have not looked back since. The consistent nature of the world, a strong story written by one person (rather than a committee that seem to dislike half of their own work), availability on console, surprisingly good character creation (it's easy to make characters that stand out and have their own look) and frequent updates have kept me subscribed. No Siege of Orgrimmar-tier content droughts there!

It's a shame, because WoW holds such fond memories. Sadly, that's not enough to sell me on. Putting in Demon Hunter seems like a last-ditch appeal to the people who have been asking for the class for years.

All the same, I hope those who are still playing and those who are tempted back will enjoy themselves.

This is so, SO exciting. NieR was easily the most interesting JRPG last generation and YokoTaro is one of the most interesting writers we have.

@jetfire10 Spoken very clearly as somebody who probably isn't told they're freakish or abnormal for being who they are. This is a comment that sounds more like "But what do these characters do for -me-?", as opposed to "What do these characters mean to other people?".

Empathy is a difficult thing to come by in the gaming community.

Bloodborne distant PS1 cousin Shadow Tower coming to PSN

Akhrati

Old-school From games were slow, clunky and awkward as fuck... but intensely rewarding and atmospheric. If you thought Dark Souls took patience, quadruple that for King's Field!

Eternal Ring was also one of theirs, which involved searching for the tiniest rings, which had no sparkle or indication they were there. Just dull, brass rings hidden in obscure places... But the most amazing music and atmosphere.

Shadow Tower is fascinating. Without any music, though... I suppose we just have to listen closely to the environment!

Sincerely hope we get it here in Europe.

@butler` A good time. Be sure to study up on how to play the game, though! The game itself doesn't do a very good job of explaining aggro and positioning, or how AoEs work.
