Frozen Synapse 2 review - sharp tactical shenanigans in a fractious cyber-city

What did you do during the incursions? When the city was under threat from within and without, when the petty, tooled-up factions were bristling and looking for any excuse to kick off, and then every few minutes they would burst through cyberspace (or whatever it is) at a new location and initiate a major scuffle?

Frozen Synapse 2 - the sequel to popular indie Frozen Synapse - has now been given a solid release date. Next week, on the 13th of September, players will finally be able to jump into the game's network of procedurally-generated streets.

Two years after planned launch, Frozen Synapse 2 finally given new release window

The developer of well-received indie strategy game Frozen Synapse has today announced the game's sequel will be launched in August.

Frozen Synapse 2 was originally due for release in 2016, but for reasons unknown, these plans had to be put on ice. Developer Mode 7 recently came under fire from the game's Steam community, who had been demanding an update on the game's release date. In response, Mode 7 has now promised the game will be released sometime in August, but it cannot yet confirm an exact date. According to its press release, "the game is currently undergoing final bug and balance testing, as well as a last beta round for gameplay purposes".

But the game may well be worth the wait, as the developer has claimed Frozen Synapse 2 is the "culmination of everything [they've] done" since they started Mode 7. The developer promised Frozen Synapse 2 has a "proven tactical core with a big, systemic strategic overworld," a glimpse of which may be seen in the new gameplay preview video below.

If you go to the Frozen Synapse website, it proudly proclaims that it is the ultimate tactical game, which is a pretty bold claim. It's also an erroneous one; with Frozen Synapse 2 on the way, that would technically make Frozen Synapse the penultimate strategy game.

Details new procedurally-generated overworld, factions and more.

Recently announced strategy sequel Frozen Synapse 2 has revealed its first gameplay in the following trailer.

This sequel to Mode 7's 2011 acclaimed turn-based tactics game is set in a procedurally-generated city where players can infiltrate any building they desire. Inspired by X-COM: Apocalypse, Frozen Synapse 2 will kick off with the player investigating "a series of incursions by a powerful force." Along the way, they'll encounter various factions vying for dominance, and each will have its own unique approach to incursions.

"Everything in the game is 'on the map', from money and supplies to VIP's, hostages and even the player's own in-game avatar," Mode 7 explained. "If a faction is transporting their ill-gotten gains back from a raid, the player can set up an ambush and try to snaffle the bounty themselves. If the player's base is raided and they are killed, the game will end."
