I've actually had the pleasure of meeting these chaps who made TrueSkill a few years ago, and they really are the brains behind a good chunk of the Xbox 360's advanced features. Nice to see they're still creating new and exciting things :D Reply0
They use LSP servers and have their own methods - though why they would need to retire games is really beyond me. They could use P2P and share matchmaking across all EA servers.
I see this as a good thing - how many times do we hear people on here clamouring for publishers to release games when they're good and not when 'the sales window is open'.

To be fair, if you cut through the sensationalist way it's being portrayed they DO have a point. Games are specifically being designed to keep people coming back to them and investing time/money in digital goods.
