The music that ALWAYS resonates strong gaming memories with me is Half Life 2 - Nuclear Mission Jam...

Everything just gelled together in the game when this music played.

Music is as essential as the graphics for total immersion IMO.

Interesting to learn about the turmoil in the background. I really like TitanFall. However, I can't help but feel that there was so much more planned for it that would have turned a great game into something truly epic. The back story for the campaign always feels as though it was meant for something more.

I'm playing on PC on insane detail level and I find the look and pace of the action at times to be simply stunning.

I don't know, but after watching the intro movie and sometimes on the campaign it feels like I'm playing a synopsis of something that was meant to be so much bigger but the developer just couldn't get around to doing it i.e. money and legal people have taken precedence over creativity and longevity of the IP.

I just hope TitanFall 2 will have a proper single player campaign and arrives on the Playstation.

  • War has changed. But has Hideo Kojima?

  • GitSomE_UK 14/03/2014

I know, I know as much as I enjoyed MGS3 there was something that just didn't quite gel with me around the story. I still don't know why as its really well done.

I think Twin Snakes was my wooah I'm loving this moment.

MGS2 the characters, the music, the setting, the story everything was just perfect and propelled the series higher still.

MGS3 seemed to implode into itself a little. I loved the back story, the evolved engine it was just something that didn't quite click.

MGS4 as per my spoiler comment and how the characters evolved. It just had me totally hooked especially with my spoiler - I did not see that coming :-)

Hmmm I think now is the time to do an MGSathon and revisit them all in readiness for MGS5... I'll see how MGS3 fares again after a third play through.

    Nice article.

The man is a legend. MGS Twin Snakes and MGS2 are my faves. MGS4 takes a special place due to what happened to Raiden which I thought was cool as fuck.

The moment Raiden took on the Geckos and Metal Gear are classic gaming moments for me

Really looking forward to the next one although... Mr Hayter did an excellent job with Snake and I'm genuinely not impressed that he won't be doing this. So, Sutherland you waltz in here with your fancy pants Hollywood blingy ways, you better not fuck Snakes voice up.

A true classic, loved the music and loved the imaginative levels. As pointed out elsewhere the music was really good for the time too.

What has happened to out MP games? I'm looking forward to Titanfall. However, when compared to the imaginative approach to gameplay that UT displayed 10 years ago the thrill of piloting a mech in a very flat environment it pales compared to this.

I hope EG does an article on BF2142 as that was another imaginative classic that was criminally underated.

    Great article EG.

Here's a timelapse video of my own machine being built.

The spec is in the YouTube description. It will give you an idea what you need to think about. My machine needed some custom adjustment with the dremmel due to the amount of stuff I wanted to pack into it.

This machine cost me a grand you can do it for much cheaper (i.e. 600 quid). I planned for that as I wanted something to last me 7+ years before I refreshed again.

If you like lego and model kits then PC builds are a doddle.

  • Savour the Wii U and Vita - they're our new Dreamcasts

  • GitSomE_UK 01/02/2014

Hang on a minute! These are nothing like the Dreamcast and the companies concerned are nothing like in the predicament SEGA was in.

if you're into the business of enjoying games rather than just dry business, it's worth ignoring the headlines, and instead embracing two future cult classics in the making.
That sir is why this article is bollocks and I'm not listening. The Vita and WiiU are far from dead. Its pundits like the author of this article that are helping to supply wood, hammers and more nails for a coffin that just isn't there.

In hardware terms these devices aren't even approaching middle age and still with loads more potential. The Vita constantly delivers quality on the go gaming and the WiiU... It's Nintendo, a world without Nintendo would be a very cold, dark world indeed. I play Nintendo when I want to break away from the grind of struggle, guns, explosions... I just want a little dose of innocent happy.

Don't build the coffin EG, celebrate them for what they are.

  • Can a £100 PC graphics card match next-gen console?

  • GitSomE_UK 26/01/2014

I'm not too sure myself as to why with some games I find it better on the big TV than my 27" monitor. I think it's because some games are like playing an interactive movie (The Last of Us for example). When I'm sat on the couch it just feels right. I think Watchdogs will be one of those games where the story grips you (The Division and MGS too). The missus also likes to watch me playing some of the blockbuster games too as the visuals can be stunning the most recent being Killzone/Assasins 4 on PS4. She's just hopeless at gaming and doesn't want to play but likes to be involved.

I think by my being in the living room playing on the TV rather than being in my own office/den I'm still there but not isolating myself away. A kind of shared immersion, like watching a film but not that's what the console gives me for certain titles.

@OtisBDriftwood Very true re: Game trades. Forgot about that side of things as I tend not to bother with trades as I usually keep them. I like to play some games again a few months down the line. When I sell the console it all goes on ebay as a bundle.

As for PC or Console each has their place. I buy both as I like to have options. For example I'll be buying watchdogs on PS4 and not PC as I want to play on the big TV and immerse myself.

Here's the spec of the 600 quid PC. May help others who are thinking about what to do next. Shop around for the prices as I found they changed from week to week.

Cooler Master Elite 130 Mini ITX Case - Black £37.00
    ASRock B85M-ITX Motherboard £66.05
Cooler Master GeminII M4 for CPU £22.00
    Intel i5 4440 Quad Core (3,10) £134.27
Kingston (2x 4GB) HyperX BLU XMP RAM £61.76
    Sapphire Radeon R9 270 £135.00
Corsair CX 500 Watt ATX/EPS 80 PLUS Bronze PSU £47.00
Bitfenix LED 120mm Spectre Pro Fan £11.99
    OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.00
    Windows 7 (ebay) £36
    Kingston 120GB SSD V300 SATA 3 £55.00

NOTE: I bought 120mm fan to replace the supplied case fan as the Bitfenix added better airflow and some subtle LED bling to the case :-)

This PC: 623 quid - approx 25 per game, annual MP subs - none
XBOne: 430 quid - approx 45 per game, annual MP subs - 40 quid
    PS4: 385 quid - approx 45 per game, annual MP subs - 40 quid

Needless to say the recipient of this machine was very happy. He's planning on getting a PS4 for the console exclusives.

    Great article.

I recently built my own PC (i5-4760k, 8GB Hyper-X, EVGA-GTX770) and the machine is just awesome at 1080 (It's all my monitor can support). I bought this instead of buying an XBox One as I was really put off by Microsofts shambles of an approach and I despise Kinect. The PC cost me around a grand.

However, I could have shaved that price down further by not switching to SSDs, Haswell, no GTX770 and gone with R9270. If I would have retained my old drives and other bumph I could have done this for under 600 quid.

Even with a reduced spec PC its still better than the Xbox One as I have a machine I can use for work too (i can create VMs as test labs). I built the 600 quid version for my daughters BF and he's loving it (i5, Haswell board,R9270, 8GB, 120GB SSD) as part of the graphics card promotions he got BF4, Ass Creed4 and Batman for free.

With my new PC, PS4 and possibly a WiiU (watching prices) I'm set for the next 6+ years. As I've bought the Haswell board I know I've got room to upgrade post 6 years if I need to.

Microsoft console is dead to me for this generation. It's a shame as I enjoyed the 360 as at the time it seemed to hit the sweet spot of price and performance.

  • GitSomE_UK 26/12/2013

Bought this today based on this article. Thought I'd give it a try... I love it. The time pressure you are under knowing the more people you process, the greater the reward and the greater the risk of a screw up really hits home especially when the paperwork starts to get complex. You are very aware of time ticking away!

It's easy to be cynical about this game but it's a perfect example of how graphics and QTE eye candy are not the essence of gaming. Someone made to comment around it being an extended Warioware segment. That's no bad thing as some of the Warioware segments were brilliant and I wanted some of those in an extended version.

I'd love for this to come out on tablets so I can play it anywhere. Very, very good and for 6 quid it's a bargain!

Really, really interested to see where this goes. If and that's a big IF Valve manage to make a useable Linux install that can be used by average Dave on his PC this could have huge ramifications outside of the gaming industry too.

It needs to be easy to install, automatic updates of drivers (based on an approved for use hardware list) and the less command line the better as this scares average Dave. With cloud provisioning of office apps why would you need to use Windows?

If this works, in a few years we really could see the beginning of the end of Windows dominance of the PC landscape for gaming. Dare I say it a few years after that maybe even finally creep into the business world.

I'm no Linux fan boy but I've used a fair few OS's in my time and both Mac OS and Windows are far too bloated for what they do. The market is long overdue for a complete change.
