The writing style of LOTR is very different though. The Hobbit has no attention span to it (being a kid's book and whatnot) and so has tonnes of locations and undeveloped characters without much embellishment to them. It's not quite as easy to do get away with that in film, which is why I reckon there's enough content for 2 or 3 films.

The narrative arc could be an issue though, yeah, I do seem to remember the book being quite episodic in some ways so it could be done. Tough to find a good halfway point, mind, what with the aforementioned lack of attention span.

I'd be very surprised if they ended The Hobbit at film 2 and then treated the third as the extras/extended cut/filler. Likely it's too late to (significantly) change part 1, now we're so close to release, but I'd imagine them 'stretching' out the events of the main plot across 2 & 3 and adding in the filler.

It's all a little worrying, but not necessarily a disaster. I guess we'll only know when the announcement (or rebuttal) is made, and some explanation given.

As for plot, I've only read the Hobbit once (about a decade ago, at that), and found the plot pacing all over the shop anyway. It wasn't really an 'in the moment' sort of a book, more told at a distance, so I'm not sure any plot line will be ruined by adding more films. If so, as Kalel points out, having 2 films has already detracted on that side.

    Why look, it's a blog:

    Incest sub-plot? Sick.

It's barely even a book, more a novella.

It's not just The Hobbit though.

Lots of stuff from appendices and Unfinished Tales.

I think due to screenplays and converting books to film, a short story can become a 90 minute film or so.

Just had a quick look around. Shawshank is about 94-96 pages (call it 100) in paperback. The Hobbit has around 320 (call it 300).

Thus, there may be some logic to it. It's just waiting fucking 3 years to see it all.

The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

Only the appendices - I don't believe that NewLine have the rights to any other material.

And, of course, Jackson will make up a lot of his own farcical nonsense if his LotR flicks are anything to go by.

Jackson made it known at Comic-Con he had more than enough extra footage to warrant one more film. That, plus Jackson revealed he'd use another 125 pages of notes from an appendices J.R.R. Tolkien included in the third "Lord of the Rings" novel, "The Return of The King."
    So there's that.

There's not more story that has to be told, there's more money that has to be made. Which ironically cheapens the entire endeavor

I thought there was a fair bit of humour spread throughout LOTR. Gimli might as well have been called "Comic Relief".

Personally, I found all the original books to be almost entirely humourless, and their being almost no concept of pacing outside of a few segments which weren't marred by pages of descriptive nonsense. So any humour or pacing you found in the LOTR films was almost certainly down to Jackson's interpretation.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Looks like they got a few humans mixed up in that photoshoot - some of them certainly don't look like Dwarves.

They look disgusting. I'm not sure I'll be able to sit through a film of that.

They all look too damn pristine for Dwarves - I wonder if they go for a facial and a manicure every week, and also pay a visit to the local hair stylist? Then there's the weekly fashion shows ......... etc.

But, WRT them looking human, all the human looking ones are related, so at least theres consistency there, I suppose.

Saw the trailer before looper, thought the picture quality was absolutely superb. If that's the 60fps in action, more of that please.

Eh? It's been a long time since I've been to the cinema but why would you need to book? Can't you just turn up any more?
