As mentioned in the demo thread the demo for this game just became available. So far I've only played some of the tutorial and and it seems promising.

Controls seem to be standart RTS/RTT controls, which makes it easy to get into. The game looks good, even if I can't turn on all the fancy stuff on my 6600GT equipped PC. From what I've seen so far the most impressive thing about the game is how living and immersive it feels. It's the first RTS game I've tried where heavy machine gun fire actually sounds and feels leathal, for instance.

I look forward to trying some of the real missions this evening.

    Edit: Link to demo

Like Pike, I've only tried the tutorial so far. Very promising indeed - it's like a cross between Call of Duty and Full Spectrum Warrior, only with much more strategic options than the latter one. Looks absolutely gorgeous, too.

Cheers again for the demo link, Pike.

    You're welcome.

I probably should post it in this thread as well. I'll edit it into the first post.

Played it some more - it's brilliant. They way resources work, with the battlefields split into sectors, how you can set up defenses, the tanks (including bulldozer upgrades and flamethrowers), the physics, the gorgeous graphics, the RPG elements, everything is top notch. Now all will depend on the level design, because the basics are all there.

It reminds me a lot of Soldiers of WW II, only that it's less tedious to play, and more geared towards battles of larger scale.

I was expecting a lot of this, and the demo didn't disappoint, quite on the contrary.

With this, Gothic 3, NWN 2 and DMOM&M, it's going to be a brilliant (and expensive) gaming autumn.

Oooh gonna have to download this when I have time.

One thing that looked a bit dodgy in the video is that it looked like it has the traditional RTS issue of troops just standing in herds, firing and being fired at. Is there any kind of intelligent use of cover or anything like that?

Or do you manually direct troops to cover, like FSW?

I'm going out with a few people from work this evening. The combination of just having bought WoW and downloaded this demo makes regret that decision.

Before I forget it, two minor things I didn't like:

    1. the interface is too big, vovering nearly 1/3rd of the screen;

    2. vehicles clip into each other quite heavily

    edit:

Don't know what I was smoking, the interface isn't as big...

Troops will go for cover, at least to some extent. But I'll have to play more than just the tutorial to find out just how believable the AI is.

They're fairly clever - of course they follow your general orders, so if you send them out in the open, they'll do just that and die. But they auomatically go into prone position, return fire, try to take cover with what's there, etc. It's pretty cool, because it allows you to control the grand scheme of things rather than micromanage every soldier or squad.

Always a delicate issue - automate them too much, and the game will play itself , make them too stupid, and it'll get annoying. Only time will tell, but to me it looks as if they hit a good balance. :)

From what I've heard, they've been shouting from the rooftops about the AI's ability to find cover.

This has been top of my wanted list for ages now, very excited!

I think one video I saw had some troops standing bravely in the middle of a field being gunned down without even flinching. Sounds like they fixed that one then :)

Played this at the weekend, basically it's DoW in WW2, but that's no bad thing as for me DoW is still the best RTS out there.

I know a few people that are playing the sort of closed multiplayer beta and pretty much everyone says it's very good indeed.

    A definite buy for me.

Has anyone managed to beat the skirmish game? I've been playing around for a bit and even on easy I can't do it, it just turns in to a big stalemate where I can't muster enough resources to roll a significant number of tanks in.

    Definately one to buy though.

I downloaded the new demo now so I could try the skirmish modus which wasn't in the earlier demo. It seriously R.O.C.K.S. What a great combination of base-building and seriously deep, tactical gameplay.

Can't wait any longer so I ordered the US version.
