@imamazed The bonus levels on Rayman Origins are a long way from easy. It is a very rewarding game to 100% and manages to be hard but fair.

@PazJohnMitch Yeh exactly - they're optional. You can complete the game and still enjoy it without, but for extra challenge they're still there.

    Bioshock infinite (XBOX360) - 10/10

Brilliant game. Probably one of the best games I've played this year along with Farcry 3 and the new-ish tomb raider game.

Fantastic art design and story and I cant wait to see what a Bioshock game will look like on next gen consoles.

Probably much like infinite does on pc I should think. The only thing I could see them doing better is the distance detail - some of the floating islands in the distance looked a bit ropey sometimes

    Bit of a catchup:

    Metro 2033
I bought this when it was cheap recently on Xbox on Demand. Generally I loved it, it did start a little slowly and a bit awkwardly but the second half was superb. It's well worth playing for something a bit fresh and different, the atmosphere was the best aspect of the game, some genuinely scary and tense moments. The story was fairly good and told well.

As a FPS, the mechanics are pretty poor. The first time I shot a gun I thought I was still in a cut scene, there is such little connection or impact. I found it quite hard to see if I was actually hitting anything as they didn't react if you shot them. So it was clunky but I enjoyed it and the story and atmosphere made it well worth my time.

    8/10

    Portal 2
A brilliantly written game which is constantly funny and engaging. The pacing of the game is great, just as test chambers start to wear a little thin it changes up and moves to a new area with new elements. The length was about perfect for me, around 8-9 hours. As with the first game, I didn't find the puzzles difficult at all really (and I'm not great at puzzle games). Maybe two had me stuck for 10 minutes, the rest were fairly obvious. I did like the fact you could solve the chambers by playing around in them, trying new things, I often stumbled on the solution by experimenting and playing, not just sat there stuck, thinking. The graphics look pretty poor these days but that really isn't that relevant in this game. I don't quite think this series is the greatest ever made, as some like to write, but these are games you have to play.

    9/10

    Batman: AA
I again got this cheap recently on Xbox on Demand. I was surprised just how good I found this. I'm not a comic book reader so a lot of the lore is lost on me but everything about the game was so well put together. The graphics are still superb, the voice acting is up there with the best I've ever heard, the story was engaging and the gameplay was a fantastic mix. The source material was obviously used well and the love and dedication to it came off in ever element. I even enjoyed the collectibles and it was one of the very few games I spent some time to go back and collect some, they were fun to get, the interviews in particular. Really highly recommended if you haven't tried it, Batman fan or not, it's just a great game.

    Blood Stone 007

Too short, looks like a PS2 game and the VA screams we don't want to be doing this.
Still has some fun moments and the stealth takedowns are fun. Driving parts are fun as well which is no surprise coming from Bizarre Creations.

    Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

Interrupted far too frequently with shoehorned touchscreen, rear screen, gyro and camera gimmicks. "Touch-to-climb" and "gyro-gun-aiming" work fine and, if anything, improve the game but I could do without everything else. The final boss battle with Guero was particularly horrible, with an extended touch screen QTE. Still, the voice acting is top notch and it's once again well paced and tells a compeeling story. I do feel the gameplay is getting stale now though. Too many gameplay and graphical interruptions ruin what is a slightly-above average game.

    Tomb Raider (the new one)

I absolutely loved this. Yes the gameplay is different from the originals in many ways but Crystal Dynamics struck an excellent balance between faithfulness to the previous incarnations and innovation as far as I'm concerned.
The characters, pacing, level design and story are all top notch.

And I love the new Lara. I hated her during the first 30 minutes or so due to a couple of gratuitous cleavage shots and the 'wet kitten' (no pun intended) take on her character but she was absolutely bad arse in the end. Which is what a tomb raider should be :)

I loved it too, a lot of people compare it to uncharted but I feel that's unfair. With the upgradable weapons and tools to open new areas, there's a mix of Arkham Asylum in there too. I loved exploring the island after I finished the game and found all the docs. I enjoyed the combat, though I agree there was maybe a bit too much of it.

Dead Island, absolutely loved it. I know it not the best game but loved the atmosphere and playing with randoms to get past the many hard parts. It does loose points for a really bad escort mission. 8/10.

Also, Stranger Wrath in Vita. That was a lot of fun. If anyone wants some FPSish action on the vita, then have a go. Loved the freedom in the levels and the ammunition on the gun was awesome. Lots of fun. 9/10.

    Crysis 360

Picked this up a while ago on an offer and have only just got around to playing it. Turns out its good! Whilst its still a decent looking title on the 360 you can see how it amazed (and possibly still does) on the PC. The lighting, effects and textures are great. It does show it's age with characters and animation though, angluar NPCs give away the titles age.

It reminded me a lot of Halo, the slightly open corridor areas with vehicle combat, no bad thing. The stealth is horribly upredictable and you are incredibly weak for a nanosuited super soldier. In fact the Korean grunts are almost as tough! The later Crysis games nail the feeling of being an predator a lot more.

Last boss fight, also utter turd.

    6.5/10

Legend of Zelda: Skyword sword (Wii)

Quite possibly the best game I've played this HD generation(even though it is SD) and that is in spite of me having major issues with the motion control method throughout my +70hr play through.

Is it the best Zelda ever? I can't say, it probably is. WindWaker like Ocarina of Time had it all, but Skyward sword is the bigger and better story with some motion control moments that improve the game experience so much that they almost make up for the parts that infuriate.

Even though I hope they don't use Wiimotes for the next zelda on WiiU and plan to make the game ending accessible to more gamers, I still couldn't give this game anything less than 10/10.

I loved the first big chunk of skyward sword but it dragged like hell for the last part. Was such a huge fetch quest, I nearly gave up.

    Hotline Miami (Vita)
Brilliantly brutal game. Controls are about perfect, music is excellent and the story is completely bonkers.

It is a game of 1000 deaths (Heck, there's even a trophy for exactly that!!), but it's rarely frustrating and the restarts are instant.

    Loved it

You could probably cut it down below 50hrs if you just go straight A → B and some how manage to finish the trickiest battles without the whole Demon Souls levelling up. Sadly I couldn't and needed to do more quests to level up. But that had the main advantage of making the game feel more open and whimsical than the dragging feeling CosmicFuzz described of just following the required fetch paths.

My lasting thought about the motion control sword fights is that I could have used less energy by going to forge a sword and have some sword fights in the real world. When my friend informed me he got to the game end but couldn't finish I'm now not in the least surprised.

    Dead Space 3 PC

Such a disappointing end to the series. Game starts terribly introducing the new crouching mechanic while blasting away soldiers instead of monsters. The games balance has swung way too far into action instead of horro, preferring to swamp you with enemies almost constantly. Despite the introduction of a few new enemy types the game feels more repetitive, there's far too many men with ice picks or the general slasher types. Environments are blander aswell with most of the game in the snow (often with short draw distances so no decent scenic view) or inside the same sorts of buildings its disappointing because at times it can look stunning such as outside the when exploring in space or the final chapter. Despite sounding overally negative I did enjoy the game and there is some genuine outstanding moments but they are held back by a focus on action rather than tension and horror. The game reminds me of mass effect in many ways how the game changed over the series to try and bring in more fans while alienating the people who bought into it in the first place.

    6/10

    Hotline Miami PS3 - 9/10

Started playing on the PC but restarted and completed on PS3.

A fantastic game. Addictive and pure, very little wrong with it, although I found the boss fights frustrating. Will probably play through again in the future to collect all the letters.

    The soundtrack really is killer.

    Hugely satisfying combat.

    Lego Lord of the Rings

The scale of the game is immense and there is a huge amount of content to work through beyond the standard levels, plus the source material is treated well but with a sense of humour that raised a smile on a few occasions.

However the same suspect QA of Traveller's Tale games is still present, I had numerous crashes and bugs that forced a restart of some levels as progress became impossible. None quite as annoying as the final bug right at the end of my Free Play run-through that caused a treasure to be counted twice, meaning the counter reset and became permanently stuck at 1/3 collected. Thankfully I found a cheat code online that allowed me to force the game to register the final Mithral brick so I could actually get 100%, but it amazes me that this bug is very common and still hasn't been patched.

7/10 (loses points for bugs, iffy controls at points, and some tedious sections.

All the eurogamers who actually play with each other on xbl rather than just post pseudointellectual pc handwringing bollocks on the forums, love the shit out of biggy.

    Dead Space 3

For the first half I was pretty much thinking "What are people on about? This plays exactly like 1 & 2.".

Things do change slightly when on the planet though. Being swamped with numerous fast moving enemies is not that much fun. Fights started playing out in a tried & tested fashion - "back into a corner, stasis them as the approach, lob a grenade in".

My main beef with the game though is that is just dragged on too long. I like a game like this to top-out after 10-12 hours. It took me 18 hours to do this one, with not enough variety to make it constantly engaging. I was actually glad when it finished.

    6.5/10.

    Castlestorm XBLA

I picked this up because it looked exactly like a browser game I was addicted to a few years ago called Bowmaster. And just like that game it is a simple, fun and compelling projectile-based game with elements of Angry Birds, Worms and tower defence.

The graphics are fantastic, although due to the hectic nature of the game you get little chance to enjoy them. The missions were varied enough to keep me going through the campaign, although I don't feel the need to go back and get full marks on all the missions now it's done.

After trying a few online matches only to be annihilated by high level players who've built custom fortresses with nuclear bomb-proof walls, I can't be bothered to level up enough to get a decent game, so I'm officially done with it now.

    Overall, an entertaining diversion.

    7.5/10

    Console:360
    Skill: normal
    Time: ? 15 hours-ish
    Completion at end screen: 94%

Played and completed over 7 days, so some quite good and long sessions. Overall I did like it a lot. Started off a little slow, a few too many cut scenes and hand holding, also QTE's (which I hate)

After that, a lot to like, I do understand that a lot of fellow EGers found it generic and formulaic, maybe not true to the character, older games ? I'm not a big TR fan at all, so have no interest in the lore. I think CD have done well with their TR games, and I enjoyed Legend and to a lesser amount Underworld. I thought the gunplay and climbing was good and the climbing in particular was not frustrating.

As a action adventure game I found it very polished and most importantly fun, loved the vast open "corridors" and I no doubt will spend some more game time collection the remaining odds and sods. I have no desire to playthrough again mind you. I did think turning the 21 year old Lara into a total bad arse killing machine was handled a little to easy, in the end she was slicing and dicing with glee.

I have not tried the MP and due to the almost universal panning, I doubt I will, but you never know I may spend 10 mins or so at it.

Story was just ok, but then a lot of stories in games are just ok. My previous two games before this were Fuse which was BLAND with a shite narrative and the sublime The Last Of Us, and nothing was going to come close to that experience. Actually with playing TLOU, you almost have to forget you have ever played it, as everything that comes post that game is going to be a letdown. You simply have to let it go…

...Right then onto the next game on the now renamed "play before I get a Nextbox/PS4 pile" backlog :)

    8/10

    Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Enjoyed this a lot. Loved the plot and the voice acting was even better than the first. The gameplay is far improved from the first game too, with a number of brilliant set pieces. Graphically gorgeous to boot. This is one of the best titles I've played this year. Yet again though, I had one or two little niggles with the platforming and climbing not playing ball. Not as bad as in the first, but still enough to get on my nerves. Uncharted 3 next, which I'll be able to download right away thanks to PS+!
