The Resident Evil films. I'm one of the reasons they keep making them.

Balancing the title for a more modern audience was a concern too, says developer Vector Cell. “Accessibility was brought up to current standards as was the level design that would seem rather punishing through today’s lenses if we had kept it exactly as it was. We feel we were able to keep Flashback’s soul and put it into a new body.”

Oh yes! Great find. Wonder if the animation will still feel so groundbreaking now.

Indeed. Hopefully they will make half the game a non skippable tutorial to sweeten the deal.

The original Flashback was fucking brutal, I'd probably welcome a bit of a tweak to the difficulty curve tbh.

It looks much better than I'd been expecting, there's a bit of a Shadow Complex vibe to it now. Which is a nicely justified, given that Shadow Complex owed a fair bit to Flashback in the first place. :)

Seems like a good point to mention Reminiscence again.

It was indeed tough. It was one of the very few games of that era i actually managed to finish though.

I recall using a magazine's guide to be able to do some of that though. I don't remember having to use an infinite lives cheat, but may well have resorted to that.

I was amazed by how it looked & what you could do in it at the time.

err Did you miss the article on the front page?
    http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-04-11-paul-cuisset-returns-to-flashback-with-new-remake

As with any early 90's game, I'd expect some of the control issues and gameplay to be tweaked for the modern audience. Its this talk of being able to upgrade/level up Conrad that has me worried though.
This is one of my gaming highlights so just hope they don't fuck it up and it can find a new audience.

Hopefully they'll try a bit harder than they did with Amy (EG 2/10).

Have fond memories of Flashback. Was the first game I bought myself with pocket money (from the Woolworths in Crawley many many years ago).

EDIT: Holy cow! Just realised this was released in '92. That was effin' over two decades ago!!!!! I'm a dinosaur!!!!

Looks terrible to be honest. None of the charm or art style of the original.

Shadow Complex feels more Flashback than this.

I'm really looking forward to this as it's one of my all time fave games. I played it on my Amiga A500. Does anybody know when this is going to come out?

Yeah, the shift to shadered-to-fuckery 3D just stripped it of something unique. Imagine if they did that to Another World.

Especially now that things like Rayman Origins have proven how gorgeous 2D visuals can be in HD, it's depressing that they didn't go that route.

I don't like the look of it either, I'll just play the original on my CD32 thanks.

    You better watch out.
    You better beware.

The original 16bit version actually comes as a bonus with the remake.

I've been looking at this game today and think I'm going to pass. Well, I'll see what the reviews have to say but I'm not liking it so far. I'm currently playing through the original for the first time via emulation and loving it. The new game doesn't look as fluid and ... the screen scrolls, making it just like every other 2.5D platformer.

The original didn't scroll by design, not limitation. Did they change it so they could show it's in 3D now or something?

    I think it's out today.

Will defo try out the demo. Not seen any reviews for it yet, but I've not been looking that hard.

I have to admit, the lack of coverage on this is rather troubling. I might just play the original again.

I'm divided between waiting for reviews and just buying it outright as support for my love of the original;.

I was able to add it through the web Marketplace though I'll be able to test it only in the evening.

The achievements are mainly combat-focused, with some odd ones thrown in (exploration? levelling?). The original might be the best thing about it although it seems it was based on the MD version instead of the superior Amiga/PC editions.

I don't remember this being that hard.. Was I amazing, or simply remembering it wrong, although I'd be surprised if i was because it was one of my favourites ever,

I've turned off all the avatars and crap, so don't expect me to be impressed by yours.

Ok, for anyone on the fence:

I'm a massive fan of the original game. I originally got it on my Megadrive and it has pretty much influenced my love of games since. I've always had an emulated copy on every PC or laptop my entire life, and I'd play it for for differing lengths of time every year (the begining forest is the part I love the most).

This is different, but it's similar. I've only put 15 minutes in so far so everything may change; the late game could be crappy and the overall skill progression could be unbalanced but it feels like Flashback. For me, that's awesome.

I wonder if the get a job section is better. I never liked that bit, especially the one where you had to install some computer chip to stop a reactor from blowing up.

EG review is up on the front page, 5 Morphs/10. :-\

    edit: From another review:
Flashback does one exceptional thing that too many remakes of classic games ignore: it includes an emulation of the original game. Flashback: 1993 Edition is unlocked on the main menu from the very start.

Unfortunately, it isn't a particularly good emulation of the classic game, with the most notable issue being the complete lack of sound during cutscenes. There is also the fact that the original is being presented as playing off of an arcade cabinet in the remake's world. The cabinet itself and background scenery inexplicably take up the majority of screen space so that you are only actually playing the original Flashback in a small window. It doesn't help that your small viewing space comes complete with artificial screen glare on the fake cabinet's display.
    Oh dear.

This reminds me a lot of Sonic 4 Ep 1, in that it's undeniably Flashback, but feels a bit wrong in ways that are hard to define. Like Sonic 4, it feels like they have tried too hard to pander to both the old school fans and those who have never played it before.

I'm gutted they ballsed up the emulation of Flashback '93. But why did they try and shoehorn an emulation anyway? Putting some effort into a proper port would've been far preferable and much less embarrassing. Even a sub-HD one. I'd have spent the 800 points for that alone as it's one of my favourite games of all time.

In fact why not just a HD port of the original, warts and all, instead of this updated version that nostalgiacs will moan about and new players will dismiss as shit? That would've been much better.

    Also: "Awesomesauce!". Fuck off.

Considering the mediocre reception this got in consoleland I doubt anyone will care but this limps on to PC next week. Might make good christmas sale fodder I suppose.
