I got the day off from work. Hopefully I don't get the rest of the week off from having electricity.

Not looking good for meme. Haven't heard from him in a while - might be taking a bumming for food at the local shelter.

He lives in Iowa I thought? They're well away from the storm.
I like that Idaho remains the least memorable state in the US. And yes, I'm Midwest. Or Midnorthwest. Or something. West, anyway. The most we'll get from the storm are some scattered showers a few days later.

It's a wee bit windy and chilly here. Course, we are not anywhere in the path but catching a teeny bit of residual effects. It's so thrilling.

Feel sorry for my boss, who was meant to go home for a holiday with the family tomorrow. Home is Tom's River, NJ, which is about as close to landfall as you'd want to be.

I'm on the CT coast. So far, a lot of wind, but not much else. They're saying it's supposed to get much worse later, but thankfully rain isn't supposed to be a major factor anymore.

Fucking Americans being drama queens as usual. I had to scrape ice off my windscreen this morning, you don't see me making a big song and dance about it.

I know, our Governor is telling everyone this will be the "worst storm ever." Our town has had mandatory evacuations. They're closing the highways to ALL traffic! Give me an effing break!

I'm mainly concerned about the power going out, but the water "could" come up to my house. I highly doubt it will, though.

The trouble with weather is that sometimes after a huge build up it prances away with little damage done, giggling 'I was just fucking with you, bro!' and sometimes it scrapes your burg off the map.
Better to be over-cautious if you're not sure which it's going to do, I reckon.

Better to be over-cautious or you might face jail for manslaughter.

Unbeknown to all on here (nor would anyone have cared anyway), I was actually working over in NY recently - was meant to be over there for 2 months but ended up being called back to London after just the one for boring blah blah. Looks like the apartment I was staying in was just inside a yellow zone on the evacuation map:

    http://gothamist.com/2012/10/28/map_heres_nyc_hurricane_evacuation.php

I'm almost disappointed I didn't end up staying out there for the second month - the block seems to surrounded by orange and a red zone. 30-something floors up - would have been an amazing view!

This all does remind me I need to work on the home survival kit; needs new batteries and candles. And water. And a cooking stove. And anything else other than a weather radio. Got one of those.

Living in the US you do get weather which makes you much more in awe of mother nature. It's a bit of a step up from, "Been pissing down for a few days now, hasn't it?" to "It's a bit nippy today".

The long thread title fucks the mobile site. This wouldn't normally be a problem, but for some reason how windy it is in America seems to be front page news.

Pro tip: Fill your bathtub with water. Then use that to flush toilets, bit of washing etc

We use the bathtub to hide from the torndoes in. Filling it with water first would not be smart.

I can't think of any situation that filling your tub might help you through?
