    My Steam client crashes every time I click on Big Picture. I'm using my laptop plugged into my plasma, as my new pc rig won't be ready for a couple of weeks yet. Just wanted to try it out. Anyone else had crashes?

    Feels like xbox dashboard. Won't use it, takes up too much screen real-estate for me. But the design is good. I tried the controller typing and it was interesting how they arranged the letters.

    It's meant to take up screen real estate, it's for use with TVs.

    Ok, guess you'll just have to wait for an update.

    Really like how you view screenshots, and you can even do snaps from the controller now.

    I really do like pointless pics of my gaming now we have screenshots in Steam.

    I don't know if this was part of the same update, but I just noticed that Steam is giving me the option to choose which drive each individual game is installed on \o/

    The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.

    It really needs an option to select which monitor you want to display on. Only allowing it on the main screen is a bit of an over-sight.

    Just put this on the Steambox I built the other night. Glorious UI, streamlined and unfussy. The box I built is a dream, totally cool and very quiet under load and idle. Almost a non-starter when the card I bought, and generally recommend at the mo, didn't fit thanks to a huge heat pipe on the side of it! A removable bit of the case meant that I just managed to work it.

    All in all, awesome. Like owning a new console.

    Cool. What are the specs of your build. I'm also interested in building one.

    Ok! My steambox!

    Case:

    Silverstone SG07 (there is now a follow up, the SG08)
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-223-SV
    600w powersupply and I *think* I got the USB 3 version... although I wired up to the USB 2 on the mobo because I wasn't 100% clear at the time of building. Has a switch on the back so you can have the mega fan on top run at either high or low speed.

    i5 3570k:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-444-IN

    250GB SSD:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-162-SA

    Gigabyte z77n w/WIFI:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-417-GI

    Ram was this, but you can probably get whatever you want on deal:
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-058-PA&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

    MSI Nvidia 660 OC Twin Frozr:
    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-msi-gtx-660-twin-frozr-iii-oc-28nm-pcie-30-(x16)-6008mhz-gddr5-gpu-1033mhz-boost-1098mhz-cores-9
    Now this existed in my big PC, bought with the premise of moving to this box at some point. Turns out to be almost a tragedy. Look at the second picture and you see a big heatpipe that runs across the top. That obscures the epic fan that sits across the top of the SG07. Thankfully, the bit it obscures you can unscrew and remove otherwise I'd be selling. Looking at the cards in this bracket, they all have heatpipes that stick out the top, so you takes your pick I think. The card itself is silent and beasts most games. Downloading Metro 2033 to see how having an i5 helps with it.

    All in all, a dreamy system. Ran Skyrim and Deus Ex on max settings last night to test out Big Picture and controller. Stuck my hand over the top after a while and everything from the case felt cool. 660 vents felt cool too. This is with the mega case fan set to low as well, so the thing runs quietly. I got the Twin Frozr 660 over the 7850 as the 7850 doesn't perform so well with noise. Plus the extra £age gave just the required extra performance to keep me happy.

    Don't think there is a need for a custom CPU cooler, but if you are keen on one, this looks alright:
    http://www.noctua.at/main.php?show=productview&products_id=50&lng=en

    It wasn't too expensive to build, the case was a present when leaving my last job, M&D got me the RAM for xmas, and I sold my Dell laptop for £300 to fund the rest. Decided to grab all the bits from Micro Direct for a net £30 more than the links above as I could walk next door and pick them up, get started that evening!

    I need a solution for non-Controller enabled games that is front room friendly. Went for a walk round Ikea to see if they had any solutions (that could be folded away or stored away) but didn't see anything that grabbed me.

    This, however, could negate the need for a keyboard at least. Just a shame it isn't wireless:

    Lovely, but I can't see me using the touchpad to game. I was hoping for something small but usable.

    Those G13 Logitechs could be useful but are sadly wired.

    This, however, looks intriguing:

    expensive but tiny.

    There is this lap keyboard thingie from amazon US

    http://www.amazon.com/Phantom-Lapboard-Wireless-Keyboard-Internet/dp/B00492C1DY

    Don't know if it's any good though not got one myself.

    Also, it may be a silly question but have you considered a key mapper?

    Heh the Phantom! Actually a Steambox isn't a million miles away from what the Phantom wanted to be, it was quite ahead of its time.

    Portable view - Never forget.

    That looks like a good option, thanks!

    Keymapper... I just tried Oblivion via Pinnacle, and it was ok. There were moments where the journal on the 360 B button would stop responding, plus a little inconsistency on when I could use the left stick to navigate options or having to use the right stick to move a mouse pointer / A being confirm in some instances and RT in others. Not sure how happy I would be with this in a more intensive game

    Another thought is the G700 gaming mouse. It has 13 buttons to map on there, which should be enough for hotkey heavy games... thinking of Planetside 2, I could have one for grenade, one for second function, one for map... and so on. All I would need then is some sort of WASD control, which COULD be provided by my PS3 Move Navi.

    I'll have a read up about that Phantom though. I think a KB&M backup solution is a good thing to have, just for those games where it really is the premium input method. I can see the 360 controller being the input of choice going forwards with the focus on Big Picture that Valve are doing. Shame Obv was before this really got going as the other half is a diehard Obv player who hates Skyrim. At least Fallout 3 seems to work despite its "I do not work on Windows 7" boasts.

    @Widge

    Yeah I saw these phantom things in a forum asking the same ages ago and was planning on one myself at some point they "look" like they'll do the job.

    FYI with a little work you can actually turn on the pad support for Oblivion in the ini. From the FAQs:

    "Game Pad Functionality

    Although the PC version of Oblivion handles best when played with a keyboard and mouse, it is possible to play the game with an assortment of game pads as well. Due to the variance in these game pads, it may be necessary to make a few changes to the Oblivion.ini file located in My Documents\My Games\Oblivion. Below is a list of the settings that can be changed to make a Xbox 360 controller attached to a PC, function better with Oblivion. It should be noted however, that because the PC version of the game was optimized to play with a keyboard and mouse, the experience will NOT be the same, as using a 360 controller on the Xbox 360 version of the game. Additionally, these settings can be applied to other game pads, but the values represented may need to be tweaked further. Finally, the mapping of the buttons will need to be determined when entering the game, and can be changed in Options - Controls, from the Main Menu - Do NOT map the directional controls (Forward, Backward, Left, Right), as this will overwrite certain changes made in the Oblivion.ini file.

    These are the default settings in the Oblivion.ini:
    ;X = 1, Y = 2, Z = 3, XRot = 4, YRot = 5, ZRot = 6
    iJoystickMoveFrontBack=2
    iJoystickMoveLeftRight=1
    fJoystickMoveFBMult=1.0000
    fJoystickMoveLRMult=1.0000
    iJoystickLookUpDown=6
    iJoystickLookLeftRight=3
    fJoystickLookUDMult=0.0020
    fJoystickLookLRMult=0.0020

    Change to these values to get better functionality from a 360 game pad connected to a PC.
    ;X = 1, Y = 2, Z = 3, XRot = 4, YRot = 5, ZRot = 6
    iJoystickMoveFrontBack=2
    iJoystickMoveLeftRight=1
    fJoystickMoveFBMult=2.0000
    fJoystickMoveLRMult=2.0000
    iJoystickLookUpDown=5
    iJoystickLookLeftRight=4
    fJoystickLookUDMult=0.7500
    fJoystickLookLRMult=0.7500"

    Ok, I'll have a go at that .ini tweak. Not sure how that impacts on mapping functions to the buttons, but we shall see.
