It's no secret that hating Microsoft is popular at the moment, though. A few people can make a point about (against?) Microsoft and back it up with facts and reasonable ideas, but then they're sadly undermined by the bandwagon stupids who seem to spend their time arguing against things MS hasn't actually said or done, arguing against things many (or all) companies do (but would clearly never comment in those instances), or bizarrely post weird anti-M$ stuff without a point in sight. There seem to be at least two posters who have signed up on EG for literally no other reason than that last one (I'm not good with EG names, sorry!).

Also, that they don't get banned even though they contribute nothing but trolling does seem to undermine DiddlerDo's post comparing EG with WPC somewhat.

Hehe, you may have a point there. Perhaps not the best quote from that article for my purposes. :D

But the maps are terrible. Had to download google maps for my phone and always actively type it in on my desktop.
I've had two Nokia Windows phones which come with the very good Nokia maps and navigation, but it's not very integrated with Bing. I had been hoping that the special Nokia/Windows partnership might provide a few things like that, but it hasn't.

IE is OK but the lack of a 'forward' button can be frustrating. Bing has some strange idiosyncrasies, like if it thinks you've mistyped a word it changes the spelling of the search for you with no option to change it back. It also defaults to p0rn a lot more than I'd expect. If there's a word with a double meaning, Bing tends to pick the rude one. But if you swear at the voice recognition it censors the word. Shit becomes "%@^&" and provides no results because it doesn't understand what you're searching for.

If you will allow me to torture an analogy, Microsoft are the Michael Jackson of tech companies.

People are able to dissociate microsofts young, successful black side, their OS and Office software division with their old, creepy white pedophile side, their tablet, console, search engine, phone and music player division.

MS arent a company that people support wholeheartedly, which makes me wonder how it manages to engender such rabid brand loyalty for certain products.

You've just reminded me of the official GFWL forums. o_O Also creepily cultish.

I wonder what the forums of PlaysForSure were like?

Yeah, thats the strangest one. At least their other shitty products have a few redeeming features. GFWL is just execrable.

My reasons for going with a Lumia and an MS phone were driven by the phone first. I just loved the first lumia design. That sweet 800 unibody.

I was a bit tired of Apple and I have always been a bit resistant to itunes and their app store, as they seemed (perhaps unjustly) invasive. Plus little was ever free and I love a bargain. Android always seemed so messy to me, the layout the store. Just a massive jumble of applications and menu's.

No real loyalty to MS but a certain fondness for Nokia.

From my own experience, going from a Nokia Lumia 920 to Nexus 5, MS are so far behind Apple and Google. I can't see their phone series taking off any time soon. They can't follow suit and drip feed updates like the iPhone, you're already behind!

I'll keep my phone for another year or so, see what Windows Phone 9 offers, if they haven't updated it massively I'll probably move to Android.

Probably a general system update in preparation for WP 8.1?

I've just switched from an iPhone 4 to a Lumia 1020, the phone itself is lovely but WP8 is a bit sparse. They started behind and haven't made much of an effort to catch up.
Mind you, the predictive text is pretty good, am impressed while typing this message.

WP8.1 should be unveiled today. I'm hoping Nokia also announce a new flagship.

Yeah, hoping for some good stuff from that.

Incidentally, is replying / quoting on here broken for everyone? I get a massive text box that looks like it's from the HD view.

It wasn't an exciting upgrade. I can turn off screen rotation now. A few other minor things like that. Pity.

Love my Lumia 1020. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with the photos though, they all look like shit.

Has anybody heard anything about upcoming handsets? It all seems to have gone a bit quiet since the buyout was announced.

There's rumoured to be two being announced today, a 630 and a 930.

The 930 is the Icon in the States?

If so it is a lovely looking phone. Should mean mean I can snaffle up a 925 for sub 200 as well.

I think I read somewhere that it's supposed to be an updated Icon. I kind of hope it looks more the 920 tbh, as I quite fancy a new phone and IMO the 920 is the best-looking phone about.

I guess we'll find out. I think Nokia's thing is taking place about 1AM GMT.

If you are getting a 920 they are 169 at Tesco sim free, plus there are some discount codes that get it down by another 10 - 20 quid.

Oh I misread your post. Yeah I like the 920 design as well.

VPN support; a new notification center; an updated user interface allowing more tiles to be displayed; updated camera layout; Google calendar compatibility; IE11 functionality and more.

@Load_2.0 Cheers, but I should probably have been clearer - I've had a 920 since it launched!

That's a good price for the phone though.

My update was a week or so ago. The latest (third) Windows 8 update, not the new Windows 8.1 which I've not seen yet.

The Cortana stuff and some of the 8.1 improvements look interesting. I hope they work well.

I guess we'll find out today if they are going to keep the name Cortana. It seems like they will. I hope so.

If they don't have Jen Taylor on board, then I will be ever so slightly disappointed.
