Ordered mine today. 30 off from Tesco. Picking it up tomorrow but after making sure everything works, the wife is hiding it till Christmas.

It's supposed to be our joint Christmas present, so she wants it to feel special apparently.

Which would be fine, if I was buying an Xbox.

Unlikely as she's almost as irritated by Apple products as me ;-)

Surface Pro 2 looks quite desirable. Form factor and battery looking decent.

@Widge we've been using a Surface 2 (not the Pro) since the weekend. I'm not sure if the "keep it till Christmas" thing has totally fallen by the wayside (teehee) but we definitely wanted to boot it up and make sure the thing worked.

I really liked it. Having not used Win 8 before, there is a little learning curve, but that's the same with any new OS (and using Macs all the time at work would have incurred a bit of a speed bump anyway).

But it's very quick, the screen is brilliant, and it's much simpler than whipping out a cumbersome laptop, but more useful than a phone. It's become my wife's default device now. Also having Office in there is simply brilliant, a very, very useful addition.

It feels slightly heavier than an iPad, and the 16x9 aspect makes it slightly more awkward to hold, but these are minor quibbles. It functions much more like a PC, even with the cut-down RT OS.

Just deciding what games to buy! Become somewhat addicted to Jetpack Joyride, which is brilliant for a free title.

    (Edited for clarity...)

That Halo game is on sale at the moment, I think.

The Surface Pro 2 is piquing my interest at the moment. A few good reviews, but the Intel HD4400 graphics really undermines everything else about it for me.

So, Surface users: as I understand it, you can hook up a DVD drive to a Surface 2 and access the disc, but you couldn't (for example) play a DVD film because there isn't the software available.

But, can you rip music from a CD?

    Cheers if anyone knows!

I have a Surface 2 but have not tried a usb drive so this is only a thought.

Windows 8.1 RT is a fully working operating system so if normal windows could do this with its native programs RT can do it. I have not seen any options to do it mind, but I have not been looking.

Kind of related, alot of people don't see the point in RT as you don't install tons extra desktop software. But when you actually use it you realise that windows has native support for a ton of features which iOS and Android don't have. Having full proper ie helps also.

I wanted a tablet with a keyboard and Microsoft office but without having to think about drivers, updates, viruses etc. While sometimes I think wouldn't it be nice to use Steam I quickly remember an android tablet doesn't have steam either. And the Surface syncs brilliantly with my desktop pc.

Yeah, the Surface has replaced my work Macbook as our default computer now. The only things I want to do on it that I can't are use Photoshop/Premiere, and Steam. And editing on such a small device is daft anyway, so I'm better off upgrading my desktop PC.

I'm really, really impressed with the Surface 2. We've got a Type Keyboard and it's great for typing (I do a lot of writing on it). At the risk of sounding like a Microsoft acolyte, I'd recommend it in an instant.

Edit: I might have a look tonight at options in Xbox Music or if there's an MP3 app in the Store. Alternatively they should let you rip CDs on an Xbox and save it to Skydrive :-)

I recently returned an ipad air because the microphones are just too quiet for skype calls. I've thought seriously about getting one of these, but it bothers me that google don't make some of their apps available for it, such as hangouts, because I would use this a lot for conferencing sometimes.

Edit: which i guess is precisely the effect google want, non purchase of rival system
