It's basically because Singer sees the first two movies as his babies, and doesn't really want to continue on just from someone else's take on the universe, so he's smushing it all together so he can carry on as he was.

Be interesting to see what continuity the new Wolverine movie takes. Jackman must be on some sort of cinematic record for alternate portrayals by now.
From what I know of it, it probably won't reference any established film continuity as it's set well before he ever meets the X-Men and has nothing to do with the Weapon X stuff.

They're going to have to address it, though. They've confirmed that it is actually a sequel to both films, and not just an "old cast has a cameo" thing. Last I heard, Singer was harassing James Cameron for time travel continuity stuff.
Singer has said it ties it all together so it should...fix?...the continuity.

What are the big differences between FC and LS?
  • Deleted user 5 March 2013 21:11:12
Mostly age differences. Cyclops is Havoc's older brother, yet Havoc would be well into his 60s, possibly 70s by the time Last Stand rolls around. Magneto and Xavier are still friends in the intro to LS, set in the 80s, and Xavier is still walking. Moira MacTaggart is in both, too, but doesn't appear to age.

Other differences are that, in X-Men 1, Xavier says he met Magneto when they were teenagers, and that they built Cerebro together (whereas Beast builds it in First Class). X-Men 2 shows Beast in human form, too.

FC has Xavier paralysed at the end and with him and magneto firmly established as enemies.

Last Stand has Xavier walking in the 80s and still firmly friends with Magneto, 20 years after when FC is set.

There's also some oddness around Mystique. Xavier doesn't seem to know who she is in the original trilogy at all, but FC established her as his adopted sister.

And there's all the Beast stuff, the use of Cyclops' brother in FC, and a a few other things.

That said, Magneto has reformed numerous times in the comics, and Xavier has regained the use of his legs numerous times as well (including right up until his 4th death last year at the hands of Cyclops), so there's plenty of scope there for Singer to be handed a get-out clause, though I doubt we'll see until the third film.

True, but that could be a holographic inducer - he used one in the comics for decades before he publicly outed himself as a mutant (and even afterwards for when he wanted to blend in).

I missed pretty much all of that.

But anyway... Iron Man 3. And I think Thor 2 is out this year as well isn't it?

    Oh yeah... IM3.

I just saw the 2nd one all the way through the other day. It sucked. The end was especially bad. You think 'all these cool robots, yeah!,' and then they suck and Mickey Rourke is laughable.
  • Deleted user 5 March 2013 21:41:07
Iron Man 2 was so inconsistent. The humour they shoehorned in with Sam Rockwell completely ballsed up what should have been a slightly more serious tone, and the end was so anticlimactic. How long did they fight Mickey Rourke for? About twenty seconds?

Yeah, Rourke looked like he would mop the floor with them, but their ultimate-secret-weapon-that-would-have-come-in-handy-countless-times-before took care of him real quick.

    20 seconds sounds about right.

I saw Sherlock 2 a couple days later and I'd about had it with RDJ for a while.

Not to mention the cock up they made of stark's alcoholism. Though they might come back to that in 3 I suppose, it seems to be taking a slightly darker tone than the previous ones.

They deliberately toned that down after they realised kids and teenagers were the largest audience for the films, and that including the decline into alcoholism wouldn't have gotten past the censors.

Incidentally, I'm watching X-Men 1 again now because of this thread. Xavier just stated that "Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey were among my first students". But anyway. Back to Iron Man.

IM2 was brilliant until after Monaco.

Funnily enough I was re-reading the Demon in a Bottle storyline just yesterday. It's still good, but certainly seems dated now (to be fair, it was published over 30 years ago so its bound to be).

My big problem with 2 is that it mashed together 2 different villains when dealing with Whiplash and seemed at the start to be setting up all the Armor Wars stuff, but never really amounted to anything.

In fact there was a lot about 2 that never really amounted to anything.

The worst thing about that was that a decorated soldier and a genius decided to fight a guy with whips at close quarters rather than fly about and pick him off from orbit.

I know thats not as excited but, christ, its the worst kind of hollywood tactics.

Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Man of Steel are out this year.

Trailer for IM3 is excellent, looks like its going to be miles ahead of 2.

The latest IM3 trailer makes the series look interesting again after the dire IM2.

30 reviews so far on Rotten Tomatoes, 28 positive, 2 negative (93%). 9 positive, 0 negative from top critics.

I haven't been to the cinema all year, so I'm looking forward to this.

In the cinema , got my ticket, large popcorn and drink. Film starts in 30 mins :)

The 3d glasses I have been given look just like the ones porno stars wear to achieve the nerdy look. Or so I have been told

Great film, loved it. Don't want to spoil anything so I will leave it at that :)

It's better than the 2nd and sets a high bar for the summer blockbusters that follow

Was a few little nods to other films throughout. My favourite if it was paying homage was the spike/blade coming out of Ironmans fist, first thought was Robocop and stab the bad guy in the neck
