I'm a casual gamer, is there a problem with that?

I only have a few hours per week to play games. Therefore, I stick to the following series: Fifa, CoD, UFC and F1. All my friends play the same games, you know what you're getting with these games and they always reach a certain level of shine and quality.

Why are casual gamers villified by core gamers? Are they considered detrimental to gaming as a hobby?

Nah, I am kind of the same.

I play Your Shape Fitness Evolved on the Kinect/Xbox 360 more than a 'proper' game nowadays.

Those aren't casual games (in terms of what the word means nowadays), don't worry about it.

Play whatever you want, man. You give valid reasons for sticking to those particular brands. No different than people who prefer trendy music or mainstream movies.

It just means you're scum. You can't help it.

    Joke? Maybe.

So why do developers/publishers refer to the core gamers and casual audience? Perhaps they should end themselves too.

Surely if anything being considered a hardcore gamer would be the thing to worry about? You're basically just a lazy paedophile as far as society is concerned then.

I guess because core gamers are noisy bastards and have a loud and continuous dialogue with the industry, whereas casual gamers talk with sales.

    Dunno.

Well at least you're not 'hardcore'. I can never take people seriously if they label themselves as hardcore. Sounds a little too macho and emotional at the same time.

I think, rightly or wrongly, the perception is that casual gamers drive sales of derivative sequels and franchises, lazy cash-grabs etc, which leads to more original fare doing poorly or not being made at all.

Core gamers are dangerous. They're the the free-thinking minority.

Hence the publisher-inserted subliminal messaging in key core titles to drive the free-thinkers towards the likes of Your Shape Fitness Evolved

If everyone who worked for any company that tried to appeal to a mass market that wants something simple and entertaining, rather than a finicky niche that spends half of it's hobby time bitching on the internet, ended themselves, it would mean the end of the economy as we know it.

Although it would mean the end of Michael Bay's transformer films.

    Tough call.

In sport the casual fans are the armchair fans. Yet in gaming, the hardcore sit in their armchairs, while the casual fan stands up.

Dunno; maybe hype has a tangible effect on how a product is perceived and performs.

Core gamers do hype really well. Viral marketing etc.
