Seeing as theres stuff all wii releases on coming up, decided to try this exclusive 3d platformer on the wii. If you havent even heard of it, apparently its been in development for nearly 10 years, unfortunately sometimes that doesnt equate to a good game.|
The Kore gang story is the typical, some girl finds power suit while the world is being taken over by some evil dudes, your job is to defeat them. The gang part in the title represents the 3 characters you can switch to within this power suit at the touch of the c button. The Girl has a double jump, grapple move and ballarina move to get passed some poisonous terrain, a boy called.. mad boy is the fighter, has a punch combo, a swirl move and the ability to repel projectiles. The final character is a dog, he gets the power suit moving quick, can pick safes, listen to conversations and when given the chance, sniff the right direction.
The game is broken up into 32 levels, each level consists of mainly collectathons with some boss fights thrown in. However, each level isnt that long at all, the larger ones will probably take between 15-20 minutes.
Apart from collecting required objects in levels theres also other blue orb things to collect, theres a set number in each level which it tells you on screen and other than getting a nice gold mark against the level when completed, theres not much incentive to find every one.
Where the game excels is in the sound, level design and atmosphere. The levels are quirky in design, very much in the vein of a rayman 3d game. Levels are colourful and often designed well enough that collecting all the blue orbs isnt a taxing job but an enjoyable one. No environment oustays its welcome and the game does a good job of keeping the flow going.
The game faulters on a number of levels however, the camera, is awful, moving it is poorly implemented, double click z to target behind player, or hold z and move the wiimote on screen just feels wrong. This leads to poorly judged platforming and instant deaths, not that theres any consequence from dying mind you.
As i mentioned, when it comes do using the dogs unique abilities you think the game would take advantage of it, no, the dogs sniffing abilities are left to unlock numerous safes throughout the game which is basically an annoying mini game of totate the lock. The listening ability is poor at best where you spot some enemies far away and just tune a radio in to the signal and hold it for said seconds, not fun. His actual ability to sniff out the correct path is well implented but your lucky to use it more than a couple of times...
With the girl, you will be doing some grappling and some bashing with mad boy and its pretty consistent throughout the game. Some non platforming sections are there like jumping on turrets and shooting stuff...
The game can be completed with 8 hours, if you do a quick run through, probably 6, the flow of the game along with its level design and atmosphere are the main draw. Unfortunately your forever fighting the camera and loose controls and repetitive design might put some off.
As far as comparing it to whats on the market, 3d platformers are slim pickings outside the galaxy games and de blob games. For me this is marginally better than epic mickey. Id suggest a rent first and youd probably knock it over pretty quickly anyway.
If it was a game that started in development 10 years ago, the gameplay got stuck there too, that could be a good or bad thing depending how you look at it.
