I agree, bioshock 2 is not a bad game but it just lacks the same spark that 1 had.

However a big part of what made 1 so good was its original atomsphere and narrative so a straight sequel would always suffer.

    On topic iam going to throw a curveball;

How about Everquest 2? the first game set a new standard in MMO design as it took ultima and ran with it but 2 was resource heavy, buggy and generally very fiddly.

Known as 'Sharzam' in 98.5% of games

Any sequel to Mario Kart (apart from the DS version, that's full of awesomeness)
    Resident Evil 5
    Metal Gear Solid 2
    Super Mario Sunshine
    Zelda Spirit Tracks
Fallout New Vegas (although I think its more me than the game itself)

Actually you are right about Burnout Paradise, that's definitely a worse sequel than Revenge.

Mario Kart Double Dash (again not a bad game, but below par for the series)
XGRA (Good games spoilt by rubbish frame rate - XGIII showed so much promise, still wish the speed of sound feature would be replicated)

i was really looking forward to Left For Dead 2, but didn't enjoy it as much as the first one, they ruined it with to many annoying special infected, weaker tank, and set in day light ruining the horror element.

Final Fantasy XIII has to be my most disappointing.

Agree that there have been more than a few disappointments though.

Surprised nobody has said Dragon Age 2 as it gets repeatedly reemed elsewhere. (Not played it myself though so do not know if it is that disappointing).

I don't know about the original tetris, but early tetris games I played lacked bidirectional rotation, soft-drop and snap rotation - all features that were in Gameboy Tetris AFAIK.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

    Eye of the beholder 2.

And although I still love it, monkey island 2 isn't a patch on the original.

I wouldn't include gameboy Tetris in sequels myself but I guess it's tricky to say where to draw the line since there's so many version and most are just called 'Tetris'.

    Portable view - Never forget.

Rock N Roll Racing 2 , went from amazing top down racer with classic rock tunes to generic wipeout wannabe nonsense.

Maybe because the first one wasn't that good anyway.

Fable 2. Never been so angry when having completed a game. So pissed off. Shit story shit ending. The one game that makes my blood boil.

    Sequels are always inferior. Mostly.

Defeat is not getting knocked down, but refusing to get back up.

Fair enough - it's a port rather than a sequel, but those features I listed were introduced somewhere between the original version and the Gameboy port, so very few of them are direct ports. And the point I wanted to make was that some of those features are things that actually improve the game to a not insignificant degree. But you're right, as soon as they started releasing games called Tetris 2 it was pretty much over for mainstream improvements.

The first Skate was amazing. All Californian sunlight and cruising around and mellow rap. The second one was all urban and dystopian and there were anti skate measures on rails for no reason and shit music.

Agreed, same goes with Dead Rising 2 IMO. Good game, but no spark.
Overlord 2 was terrible IMO, and I loved the original.
