Ubisoft just announced the new Anno which if you haven't guessed from the title is all futuristic!

    Official site
    RPS Link

The screenshots look lovely. Just the other day I was wondering what the new Anno would be and remembered filling out a survey which had a question about what setting you'd like to see, I ticked futuristic :)

    Portable view - Never forget.

Saw this on the front page and it's got me well excited. The last Anno was pretty damn fine but the history setting was pretty much drained dry. It'll be interesting to see how the futuristic setting and the world map are joined together. Hopefully there will be plenty of missions with fancy gubbins to find.

While I do love the pioneering/age of discovery style of Anno, it's really nice to see a change, always thought an Anno game in Space would be cool (with planets instead of islands), but the terrestrial sci-fi theme could be pretty interesting

    Can't wait for this.

I enjoyed the last anno. It was like building a big, finely tuned machunr, kind of like space Chem in a way. It satisfies the same itch for me.

I'm all about the futurez, so this will probably suit me more.

:D Haven't played the previous Anno games, always been interested though as I love SimCity and Civ games.

I love these games, but I'm a bit concerned at the whole Ubisoft angle. Their PC track record has taken a bit of a beating recently.

Also: HOW MUCH MONEY WOULD SIMCITY 5 MAKE?

I don't give a piss about DRM as long as I get more Anno.

    Fix away ;)

I imagine that there is a graph at EA showing effort vs profit, and the Sims expansion line beat the Sim city 5 line

Ok, I've just started my first Anno 1701 game, Loving the look and feel so far, how I've not played this game before is a bloody mystery. I hope the micromanagement is as fiddly as it seems thus far though.

New trailer complete with cheesy voice-over.

The environmental vs industrial is looking a bit black and white (or green and brown), hopefully the game doesn't get all judgemental and message-y.

Just had a go at the demo, it looks very lush so far. Lovely detail and I spent a bit of time just staring at the water. I'm not sure if a mission structure suits this type of game, or if there will be a more suitable sandbox mode?

Developing underwater structures (woot) may seal it for me. Looking at the detail of the game, if U/Soft can incorporate some sort of co-op to share the workload it would be great imo.

I've just finished playing the demo, and I came away from it impressed. I liked the way it's presented and the story told. The characters were good, It's graphically rich with a nice style, and in terms of the difficulty curve even though at first I was a little lost, it took 10-15 mins to get used to it. There seems to be a good amount of depth without throwing too much at you.

Another good thing they do provide you in the demo is a data log, with entries for many subjects. The instructions and information is easily digestable and to-the-point.

Helpfully, the voiced AI assistant does keep a track on the proper running of things, and (at least for the demo) suggests solutions to complications and shortfalls, and you get little prompts that show up on the left of the screen. I didn't feel I had to focus on all things at once, but could get on with the mission unhindered, for the most part.
    It's really good. :)

Not sure if it's got that essential aspect of a sci-fi themed building game - relatability. At least you're mining for coal and iron rather than unobtanium

In the opening video, the game shows how relatable it is, by chronicling the effect the fictional drastic rise of the world's sea level has on the world as it is now. Considering that erosion, and the changing climate are current talking points, I think that it establishes that. It's also not really sci-fi. Near-future would be better description for its setting.

Just played the demo, I enjoyed it. It felt a little like it was constantly giving me micro instructions but I expect that's because it's the early/tutorial levels and later on you'll be given a bit more freedom.

Just played through the demo, and will definitely consider picking this up later in the month. Based on the Anno series' past form I'm sure it'll be possible to start playing on continuous mode and totally skip the story based stuff. I hate the spoon feed missions and always skip the campaign in this type of game.

The new theme is really refreshing after having had 4 medieval settings in a row: 1602 1503 1701 and 1404 (the rule is they have to add up to 9 in case you didn't know) and I think the eco element is going to add a nice extra layer to proceedings. There aren't enough (good) games where you focus on something other than killing stuff so I hope it does well!
