That's the only direction I feel is absolutely worth sharing. If you're fighting skeletons in a graveyard in the first couple of hours, YOU'VE GONE THE WRONG WAY. Before and after that, I feel that there are no "wrong" ways, and you can explore and discover by yourself. But understanding that some places possibly aren't the ways to go, using the skeletons as an illustration, is the only nudge I'd give. ^^

    Cock. It.

I'll just say, "gaping dragon," and leave the rest to your imagination.

Did manage to get his tail off on my third go, though ;)

Yeah, gaping vagina is a tough one. Best to have help with that fight.

You can do extra damage by attacking its head/

@Mola_Ram On that last attempt, I got its tail off and had it below half HP, but all my equipment suddenly broke (is that what his sludge does?) and then he flattened me.

Not sure if his attack pattern changes at that point, but it seemed to.

I had laid a summon down on my previous attempt, hoping for an NPC, but there doesn't seem to be one available and no players showed any interest in the few minutes I had it down.

Felt I was making reasonable progress that last time; it can only improve.

Yeah, the spooge degrades your equipment. Best stay clear!

And there are summons available. At the very least you should be able to get Brolaire. As with most bosses, having someone to draw aggro can make all the difference.

@Mola_Ram Hmm, thanks. I'll try again in a bit.

When I used Sol for the gargoyles he arrived immediately I put my sign down.

His sign should be there. There's no need to put down yours!

Yes, I (beginner though I am) thought that and looked for it.

Must have missed it in the fog :)

I think you can also get Lautrec, if you rescued him.

    @Mola_Ram I think I did.

How the hell did I miss all these summon symbols?

No idea. You are human, right?

Some of the signs aren't in plain view either, but they're usually pretty close to the boss area.

@Mola_Ram I was human at that point; hence being able to put my own sign down.

I was probably a bit overexcited and missed it on my way to the door! :)

Right. Had three goes with Solaire. He's useless; just gets killed all the time.

Had about half a dozen more goes on my own. Closest I got was the last few notches of his health. Another round or two (probably one) of headshots would have definitely finished him off, but I got stuck against a wall and got stomped.

Going to take a break now :)

He's not there to kill the boss. He's there to distract him.

    But yeah, you're pretty close!

It's weird: I seemed to play much worse when he was with me!

It's not like I was trying to protect him or anything. Maybe I lost my concentration a bit.

I find Solaire actually gets in the way during the gaping dragon fight and makes it difficult to get in and out. Have you also cleared the mage that make him more powerful? I only ask as it's possible to get to the GD without having done that and it makes the fight much tougher. I was on NG+ and assumed it was a feature until I realised I hadn't cleared that fucker.

You are a factory of sadness.

@Mr_Sleep If you mean the guy on the balcony (I saw a reference to him somewhere on another website) I sniped him from afar yesterday some time, before I even knew the boss was down there.

I'd hate to think what this fight would be like with him still around.

Yay, after 2 years I've now finished the game, bring on Dark Souls 2!

    Oh no, NG+ is starting!

Ah good man, it seems you're suffering the same thing I did when I first played, getting your arse kicked by what is the easiest boss in the game. Basically the idea for him is stay at range, don't bother running into smack him in the head when he does his head slam, instead move out of the way so he doesn't trample you and wail on his back end once he stops moving.

Have you killed the Channeler that hangs around on the balcony? Him being dead makes that fight waaaaaay easier.

Gaping Dragon was a bit of a toughie. I think I just got annoyed and then started upgrading my claymore and did it.

@Dr_Mech Yep; took out the Channeler fellow yesterday, without knowing he was associated with a boss.

Good advice on range. I always think, "I can get one more headshot in before he goes for it," and inevitably get stomped after risking it a few times.

Wondering about using my (pretty decent) bow at those times instead...

I never used a bow on a boss, not sure how that would work. gaping dragon is a weird one as sometimes he goes down easy but other times it takes several goes. My playthrough as a spell caster was when I realised brolaire was useless in the fight.

You are a factory of sadness.

So, picked this up where I left off a couple of months ago... which is Kalameet :D (NG+)

Best I could do so far is about one quarter off its health. Reminds me a bit of Sif (which took me ages to beat), but I think I know what I have to do now.

Will have another go when my other half is not around distracting me with her commentary ("oh, you're playing *that* game again?") ;)

There's one boss which is made a million times easier if you use a bow.

Quelaag. The longbow has the perfect shooting rate for keeping her pretty much infinitely stunned at a certain range.

If you hit the torso it counts as a headshot and you can shoot something like 5-10 hits at least and they're all critical hits.

She'll inch her way to you in the end but you can just roll away and run to safety and start shooting at her again.

The only sure fire way I can get this guy reliable is to

stay at range at all times. Keep an eye on your endurance, You want to be able to leg it away from him at any given point

Only attack after he's done his lunging attack (where he always follows up with about 5-6 steps forward)

When he's doing the 5-6 step forward thing, go and attack him WHEN HE HAS STOPPED. And only FROM THE SIDE AND THE BACK. Go for his back legs and/or his tail. Do not get greedy. 3-4 hits tops, and then leggit again.

    Repeat

Pros' - it works 99.9% of the time
    Cons - takes ages

@quadfather Heh. Cheers Quad and everyone.

I've got a pretty clear mental picture of what I need to do now.

(Will be constantly going over it in my head today at work... ;) )

Turns out the keywords yet again are "caution" and "patience".

    Who knew? ;)
