Putting my cat to sleep :'(

    Just got a call from my dad - he and my mum were at the vet with our 16 year-old cat, Olivia, and she - the vet - says that "it is time" - right now. We returned from a weeks holiday this Friday, and found Olivia tired and even more plagued by arthritis than she has been for the last year or so, and it turns out that she is probably now in a state of kidney failure.

    My parents are coming to pick me up in 15 minutes, and even though I know that she has had the very, very best life imaginable for a cat, it is still going to be so fucking horrible. Shit.

    Feel for you mate. I have lost many pets to old age. Dogs and cats are brilliant. As you say she had a great life, there is no shame in crying your eyes/heart out ;)

    Never pleasant but often necessary. Hope it isn't too horrendous.

    Yeah, really is a terrible thing when you lose a pet.
    Had to watch my Doberman have a heart attack infront of me when I was the only one home a number of years ago. He had been ill for a few months and we thought he might have a bit more in him but I guess it all got too much for the old fella. That was really not nice :(

    I had to put my dog down who was 18 last year, it was the worst day of my life :(

    My cat was 21 when this happened. It was horrible but at the same time she was suffering and seemed quite peaceful at the end.

    That is fucking terrible!

    Still she did live very long for a cat. My best cat ever, Pussy, lived 16 years too.

    That WAS her name honest, I was innocent when I named her :)

    Was looking through family photos from waaay back in the 40's and there was one of a dog and the writing on the back said 'Our dog, Darkie'

    Yeah, we had put down our 14 year old cat about this time last year. It was pretty horrible, but worse was watching him wither away from cancer.

    Bad luck mate. My Mum and Dad had to put their dog down yesterday. Not nice.

    Oh man - this brought back some hard childhood memories for me. The day our cat had to be put down was the worst - not because I was there at the time, but because I had to run to the vets to meet my young brother who had taken the cat there and found him crying in the street :(

    Pets rock, especially cats. But it sucks to see them die.

    my cat is 14, and seems fine. he'll probably start giving up soon.

    He's the best cat ever :(

    So sorry to hear that. They may be little furry creatures but they do make an impact on your life. It's a horrible thing to go through, but if you need to grieve just go for it and take comfort in the fact that you will always have nice memories of her.

    Horrible news that is. Having a pet put down is one of the worst things ever, and I dread the day I have to go through it :(

    But make sure you try to focus on the fact that you gave her a great little life and cherish all the fond memories you've got of owning her.

    My cat Sally was put to sleep when she was 18 in the same scenario. My sister who was a veterinary nurse took her in to have a checkup and the Vet said it was time too. My sister was distraught, it took her a week to call me and let me know as Sally had always been my cat and my sister was worried i'd be angry with her or something like that.

    It's a shame and there'll be a cat shaped void for a while but i'm sure she had a great time and a good life and that's all you can console yourself with. Until you get a new lil' mograt at least :)
