It was a pretty poor review and doesn't do EG any favours when comparing it to reviews of the same game that can be found elsewhere online, a number of which are far better written in my opinion
I thought it was obvious it was my opinion. As I said it.

Cheers though. Do you do general proof reading as well? I have some essays need looked at.

It probably could have been sidelined into an outline box rather than being the focus of the review but the highlighting of how "hunt the stupid hidden objects" has become standard game filler, in addition to how the constant pop-ups of 'acheivements' can spoil tone was a decent observation.

Obviously i've not played itTR yet for comparison but i struggle to beleive it is worse than AC3 for this sort of mindless crap.

beneath al that the message was simple enough - it's an amalgamation of what's been proven to sell in the 3rd person action adventure space - probably cribbing everything it can from the likes of AC and UC leaving it feeling competent but not amazing. 8.

made sense to me despite being hidden amongst paragraphs of commentary on what passes as game content and player reward these days.

Well I thought the review was one of the more interesting eg ones, I never check who writes them but this one was best of late.

Yeah I like Ellie reviews the best. I never ever agree with Eurogamer reviews anyway but at least Ellie's are enjoyable to read.

You're just saying that because she's a girl you big lezzer!

The game does look pretty damn good though. More violent than I thought it would be, not a bad thing in my book.

Her reviews are fine. I can't say I often agree with her but they're funny and usually you get an idea of how much she enjoyed the game. Less so with TR admittedly. I didn't get the impression she was enjoying it until the paragraph really. Even then, the rest of the review was more of a gentle ribbing of TR's inconsistencies and mild sex/racisms than a real dressing down.

I am the opposite. If I see it is an Ellie review I know I can just ignore it. They are usually entertaining but she clearly has nothing in common with me when it comes to enjoying games. In fact she is the only reviewer I can actually name, and that is only because I have trends to look back at the review again to see why it seems so out of touch with the usual reviews that I agree with on the site.

Well, she gets people talking - whether we like her or not, we're talking about her and the game and EG.

I read The Telegraph and Edge reviews after reading Ellie's. Usually the EG review is enough for me, so it probably wasn't very good.

Me not liking her reviews is not me criticising her or calling for her to be fired or anything. Most game reviews I disagree with, generally eg is the exception. They are by definition opinions rather than facts.

I didn't say that! In so many words. :p

Nobody thinks it's a coincidence that Ellie of all people would review TR? OF ALL PEOPLE?!?

Do you need to be some sort of Tomb Raider Review specialist to review a Tomb Raider game these days?

Why would anybody be disqualified? Sorry, you're not good enough to review high brow, quality entertainment like Tomb Raider.

Well she reviewed Underworld too (reviewed it well if memory serves), so I guess she is a sort of Tomb Raider expert. God knots I couldn't drag myself through that shit.
  • Deleted user 26 February 2013 17:27:51
Okay I've changed my mind on her, clicked on her and scanned her reviews and looked at her Alan wake one, it was blasphemous.

What's wrong with the Alan wake review?

Is anyone else getting a bit bored with remastered games? Read my thoughts!

From memory piss poor attempts at humour involving a car sounding like a bear wanking(?!), and not much said about the game.

Those who do not learn from history and condemned to repeat it!

I'll never get my Orc looking the same again.

Don't go by just eg's reviews, it's just One person's opinion.

Edge is the holy grail for reviews, this got an 8 so all good.

If you're all so pissed off about achievements and other popup stuff, then why can't you simply turn 'em off instead of moaning about it?

    Too sensible?

You can't turn it off. Maybe you can turn off the pop ups, but you still have to get the sweet kills to collect the xp to unlock the perks to get more sweet kills.

An opinion piece on VG247 contains more actual information about the game than the Eurogamer full review

    http://www.vg247.com/2013/02/25/tomb-raider-a-worthy-reboot/

Detailed and to the point apposed to the EG review which begun with the near 8 paragraphs of waffle which could have been spent describing the actual game.

The score is fair enough, but the review was appalling. We want to understand how the game plays and feels through reading the review, not the reviewer ramble on trying to be clever and not mention how the basic mechanics of the game work.
  • Deleted user 26 February 2013 20:25:25
You press a to jump then push up to pull up on the ledge. You can carry three weapons at a time. There are seven quick time events and every time you go near cover you automatically attach to it and crouch.

How dull, I'd prefer eg review.

Here's my take on it. I feel the review could have done with a little more detail BUT... I still got a really good idea what the game was all about, how it plays and how it "feels" and Ellie did that without having to list features like some kind of walking press-release.

I wrote a piece on AATG for Simon Parkin's Uncharted 3 review and the criticism that received, and to cut a long story short here and now, I would much prefer reviews like those over something more dry. If I wanted a "these are the game mechanics" review I'd go read the game's feature list.
