Personally I prefer it over Dead Space and it is very atmospheric indeed.

It's a very good looking, tense shooter with a survival-horror element. The only downside is that the weapons weren't all that great, something I hope is addressed in the sequel.

I wouldn't recommend playing it on easy, unless all you want to experience is the story. Survival horror games on easy setting are invariably not interesting enough imo as they turn into a straight shooter.

Bought it on launch, hated it and thought it was unplayable. After buying the Ranger Pack, I loved it and couldn't imagine myself playing this game without the add-on.

I just noticed something strange: eventhough I bought the Ranger Pack long ago and finished it, I cannot select Ranger Easy or Ranger Hardcore when I want to play the game offline?! They don't even appear...
I cleared my system cache, deleted my save files, reinstalled the game on my harddrive, downloaded the pack again, ... Still won't work offline. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Anyone know how to fix it?

Finished it yesterday I think...(wind chill kept blowing with a black screen after the credits, not sure if it hanged or if that's supposed to happen...

I went in thinking it was more horror like and stealthy but did enjoy it...Not sure about the story though...It builds you up as some sort of saviour or something with paranormal abilities but then ditches that idea to go for a more traditional fetch quest...

It was also slightly more linear than I'd liked...Though it did often make me wonder if I had just made a choice and there are missions/ areas still to discover...

The achievements talk about a number of weapons I haven't even seen...Also the boy you rescue has an important father and then that storyline abruptly stops right there...

Loved the atmosphere and could really see this working as an MMO...

I hate Librarians by the way...Don't seem to work as advertised...

I'm currently stuck on the first part of level 4 'War', and have hit what seems to be a massive difficulty spike, which is only made harder by the crappy D-pad making it almost impossible to select night vision goggles when I need them.

I already dropped the difficulty to easy after an earlier similar spike during the 'Bourbon' level, so that's not an option, but very tempted to give up now. Will probably try again tonight, going back to the start of the level and using a walkthrough, as it's been really enjoyable up to this point...

Is there something obvious I'm missing. A quick search just seems to say I've missed buying a stealth suit which was all but vital for the level, but is there anything else?
  • Deleted user 21 October 2012 17:58:29
    @dancingrob - I don't think I had a stealth suit but it's a tough section for sure.

Assuming you have the night vision goggles, head towards where the 'preacher' guy is standing on his cart delivering his sermon and wait a couple of minutes for it to finish. Once finished, all the guys leave and resume their normal routes. You then take a sharp left and head down some steps right next to where the preacher was standing.

Follow the walkway underneath the train tracks for a bit and you'll find a bit where a guy is about to be executed. Go towards that area and you can jump onto some pipes and work your way downwards right to the very bottom of the area (the green foggy stuff you can possibly see from the rails).

unfortunately, too difficult for me even on easy is a new one on me! I'm the first to admit I'm generally rubbish at games, but it's generally only the 'final boss fight' type things I have trouble with.

    @ Ironlungs

Thanks, will have a go at the stealth method and see what happens. I had a look at the route you mentioned, but couldn't see the door out of the room where you pick up the night vision goggles. Will try again anyway...

nah, you should be ok - i'm shit at stealth and i managed it, i know the level you mean, though

problem is, it's ages since i played it so can't help you to the extent that ironlungs has....
  • Deleted user 21 October 2012 19:49:47
No worries - I'd post a YT video but that kinda spoils the fun I suppose :)

You definitely want to do as much stealth as possible - throwing knives are very good if you can use them effectively but that's harder in practice to pull off.

Right at the start of the War level is where the preacher is, you can possibly hear him - just head left up the tracks (the right leads you to a set of NVG's and not much else other than a couple of guys to kill).

tried it again today, and completed the awkward bit. I needed a youtube as I couldn't spot the jumping down point initially, but then went through the rest of the chapter afterwards, getting quite stuck again just after the DJ Aytrom achievement, as I barely had any filters at that point.

I found the whole chapter incredibly hard to be honest! Much as I'm enjoying the game, I suspect I'll hit another difficulty spike before too long. Hopefully not though...

Are the last three chapters particularly difficult compared to the rest?

There's one section in particular that will have you tearing your hair out, yeah (worst section of the game imo). Shame it's on a bloody great level too.

Watch out for the wall amoeba's...

It is a tough game, you're right, some sections I remember vividly purely because of the amount of times I had to retry them :)

Glad to know I wasn't the only one getting angry at that moron casually bumping into swarms of enemies to make them explode...

Never even heard of a stealth suit...

    Thanks!

definitely getting the feeling this will be the first game ever to land on the 'abandonded' pile due to my own incompetence, but we shall see...

I was thinking more of the escort bit through the exploding amoeba/blob-things but the library too....argghhh!

@dancingrob - keep at it if you can, it's got a suitably cool ending :)

Hint: you can eliminate the majority of the pods they spawn from even before going down there. All it takes is a little sniping from afar with a decent weapon (which you should have by that point in the game). This is done before you and your team investigate the control room and are ordered to go down.
    .
Glitch (x360 version, dunno about PC version): as you take the elevator down to the first section of blobs, if you rush out the elevator and leave your comrade behind to go about your blob murdering business, for some reason, he will stay put. After clearing out the pods, run back to him and he will follow you to the end of the section.

At any point in the game it’s pretty important to remember to resort to stealth. You get a shit ending if you’ve murdered your way through everything in sight, unlike the quite lovely bittersweet ending you get if you do your level best not to kill stuff (which is no longer canon – the next game carries on from the “bad” ending unfortunately). I believe the difficulty curve of the last few sections is meant to reinforce this.

I've now played through chapters 5/6 and found them nothing like as difficult as chapter 4. The library and explody-blob sections seemed far easier than the whole Nazi really!

Possibly because I'm still playing on easy and haven't bothered putting the difficulty back up I suppose, but I find the stealth sections so tricky combined to the more straight forward shooty stuff.

Looking forward to finishing it tonight anyway. It's incredibly atmospheric, one of the best games I've played from that side of things to be honest...

Been playing through this now, got up to Chapter 3 but it's horrendous. It's glitched out a number of times and the game is beyond words unoptimized on PC, it requires a beastly setup when the game doesn't even look that good to begin with. Plus, the difficulty spikes are fucking annoying. I don't think I can carry on persevering through it, it's awful.
