D700 on the horizon? Page 5

Heh... I'm hearing on the DPReview forums that the D300 is actually very good at 1600 and 3200, and seeing examples at those ISOs that match what I'm getting at 1000 on the D200. That would make all the difference, frankly...

Plus it means you won't have to replace the DX lenses.

Which is a shame, as I'd have given you 500 for a mint 17-55 f/2.8.

    :p

Cheers bauhaus for the very helpful PM by the way!

Well... I'm not in a vast hurry but I'm a firm believer in doing an upgrade properly if you're going to do it, so I do keep thinking I should do the D700 thing because surely DX is on the way out. On the other hand, I have no real need to get any more lenses at the moment. The 17-55 is a great length on the DX sensor for the wide angle side of what I do, and the 70-200 gets that extra bit of magnification that's also invaluable to me. Going full frame isn't what I'm looking for - it's the sensor noise at 1600 and 3200 that I'd really like to lose for those low-light scenes.

Still - I won't believe the difference is that great until I can actually see with my own eyes on a screen a shot of the exact same scene from both a D200 and a D300 both shooting at 1600 and 3200. Anyone got both those bodies that's prepared to do me that massive favour?

If anyone can do this, it's crucial that it's a low light scene, not one that's actually well lit if you open up the shutter nice and long on a tripod, as that's not what I'll be using it for and it's the underlit scenes that get the worst noise.

I have received my D700. All my lenses are manual focus AI lenses so full frame and low light pictures will be interesting. You can program in the lens size and minimum aperture value for EXIF data and metering. I am REALLY looking forward to using my 50mm 1.2. The only downside is I have torn a muscle in my shoulder and I cannot pick the bugger up. There is no printed manual in the box. I downloaded the PDF and sent it to a printer, he wants $30-$40 AU to print it. 400 pages at A5 size double sided on A4 and stitched in the centre.

Ordered mine yesterday. Arrives tomorrow with a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8.

    Cannot. Fucking. Wait.

And it's here. And it's awesome.

I'm very jealous of that lens. It looks gorgeous.

I would, but... I'm home now and I just don't have the energy to take it out my bag. So tired. :(

It's not really the pictures that I'm blown away by as I sort of expected that. You'd just look at them and go, "Looks... nice." It's the usability and the functionality of the camera itself, the menus, the options, the promise it represents.

The lens is good too but I can't get that excited about it as it's just replacing my 17-55, which is a DX lens that won't work properly on the D700 I was forced to replace it.

But if there's something you want to see picture wise, I'm happy to try and help out. :)

And it burnt a 3000 hole in my credit card. :(

Still, there's a D200, grip, and Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 about to get sold, if anyone wants to make me a sensible offer! I have no idea how much they go for on eBay seperately or together, but I'm guessing about 500 for the lens, probably about 600 for the camera and about 100-150 for the grip? I dunno, just guessing based on what I paid for them and what's available.

Ooh, the lens appeals. First dibs? I can give you an answer by tomorrow am at the latest?

Well to be honest with you, I'm really not in the Ready TO Sell zone just yet, and still don't know if I'd make more off selling it all as a package or individually, or if I'd get more via eBay or selling at a fixed price to whoever (such as your good self). I do sort of need to get as much as I can off of it, not unreasonably so of course, but I can't really do any EG discounts for this sort of kit. Those prices are really just ideas in my head, based on, well, absolutely nothing.

But by all means make me an offer and don't worry about it going anywhere in the next few days. :)

And have fun with the new camera and lens. I have a small ambition to run to the Nikkor 12-24, the 24-70 and (I guess) the 70-200.

Which would make a few grands worth of dent into my bank balance :)

Got it, and will do. I'm just a bit busy right now, tomorrow being my 16th day of work on the trot, followed by ONE day off then back to it, so I'm in no massive rush to spend my day off faffing on eBay or anything! Will definitely let you know what's going on.

Actually almost 3 years old since the launch. I think it's going to be at an event in Slovakia, and should be a D3 and D700 replacement (two FX bodies). I am waiting for this for a long time .....

Are you sure you have the right thread, and don't want D7000 one? How is the d700 a d700 replacement?

D800? We're still waiting for a refresh of the D1/2/300 line.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

Has that even been announced yet? I did hear a rumour ages ago of a D4 this year and that would follow, but nothing since. These rumours were from last year.

I would assume if the D4 is announced / released this year which it could still well be, the D800, won't be till late next year at the earliest. The differences between the 2 will be minimal I imagine, the biggest difference will be price, and Nikon won't want to lose out on D4 sales.

I am basing my post on this:
Nikon D3 and D700 replacements coming August

Nuove Nikon eredi di D3 e D700 in vista?

    And this recent post:

    August 24th: Nikon D700 and D3s successors

Okay, there were rumours last november I think, I cba to find the links (sorry). The timing is about right. but as above they won't release both at the same time.

The D700, came out about 2 years (at least) after the D3, they will try and get as much mileage out of the D4 (if thats what it is called) first.

They won't release both at the same time imo

That is what I read unfortunately. D4 is more likely to be announced with D400 at end of this month, and then D700-replacement (if it comes at all?) next year :( but hoping anyway, like the Firefly thread :)
