You need a small piglet or a nice big carp (about 10lb) to suck on the finger.

Starve the piglet for the few hours then tuck it neatly under your arm so it doesn't wriggle to much. Carp is't too much of a worry as once you get the finger in its mouth they are relatively calm.

/ wonders where magicPanda aquired this highly specific knowledge

Saliva, rotating the ring and sliding stuff under it are all good ideas. Preferably while your are holding your hand over your head to drain the blood out, and somebody else is doing all the ring-wrangling.

Update - it's off! It's gone! It almost took my finger with it but they were finally separated and now it stares balefully at me from my mantlepiece, contemplating its next move...

It has however left its mark, in the form of a shadow version of itself stained onto my skin. So it looks like I've drawn a green/grey signet ring on my finger, very classy for client meetings as I'm sure you'll agree.

Took soap, cold then hot water and whisky to get it off.

Anything that leaves a grey green stain is not deserving of the title 'antique'. A closer and more accurate description would be 'Christmas Cracker Tat'.

Cut your finger off below the knuckle.
    Put it on dry ice
    Rush to the ER

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Now, Jeepers, let's run through the reasons I might bump this thread. The information following may be relevent:

    1) Today's weather was particularly fine.

    2) Today's workload was particularly low.

    3) I have been on a diet since Feb, and believe that my fingers may be thinner than at previous points in my life.

    4) A certain lady of my acquaintance was free for drinks this afternoon, and the weather warranted both the first al fresco white wine and the first pimms of the year.

Edit: crucial 'r' so the gentlemen didn't suspect I'd got lucky.
