Wii sales hit 10 million in Japan

It's taken longer to get there than the PS2.

Nintendo has now sold 10 million Wii units in Japan, according to data trackers Enterbrain.

PS3 is in second place with just over 4.75 million, while Xbox 360 is trailing on under 1.3 million.

As Kotaku points out, it's taken 170 weeks for Wii to reach the 10 million mark. PS2 was a bit quicker with 131 weeks.

Here are those figures in full:

  • Nintendo Wii - 10,009,736
  • PlayStation 3 - 4,766,408
  • Xbox 360 - 1,235,049

I think I got this backward.

Or is it on a world scale that Wii sells faster than the PS2?
  • The_Inquisitor #2 2 years ago

Probably took longer because the PS2 had a DVD player.
  • Alterego-X #3 2 years ago

Yes, MORZTAN, the Wii is a lot slower in Japan than worldwide. This whole home console generation is quite week in Japan, compared to the previous ones.

There's been a recession going on ya know

Ignoring the console war, adding those numbers up means there are sixteen million next gen consoles in homes in Japan alone - ignoring previous gen consoles and ignoring handhelds. This industry is insane.

EG list the PS3 as second place and Xbox 360 in fourth. Surely they are positioned fourth and fifth respectively as the PS2 has still not been discontinued?

Ironically I bought a PS2 long after my Wii purchase. I really dig Metal Gear Solid 3 you know.

    @Otogizoshi

I meant the PS2 sold really well and fast, in part due to the DVD player, so it apealed to everyone, not just gamers.
I didn't mean the Wii needs a DVD player (that would be silly), but rather it had a tough job on its hands beating the PS2.

that wouldn't be silly, would definitely reduce the clutter under Stevie the TV.
