VG247 cleans up at the GMAs

Eurogamer takes home a trophy too.

VG247.com won big at last night's Games Media Awards, with bossman Patrick Garratt picking up three trophies.

The games media legend received the Games Media Legend award and also Best Specialist Writer, Online. VG247, which was set up in partnership with Eurogamer Network last year, took the Best Blog trophy.

While we're attempting to ride on the wings of Pat's glory, we might as well tell you that Eurogamer won Best Website for the third year in a row. We've been drinking champagne out of sombreros for 14 hours.

Edge took the award for Best Magazine and Best Broadcast went to Friends of Eurogamer One Life Left. Mike Channell from Official Xbox got the Rising Star trophy, and regular Eurogamer and PC Zone contributor Jon Blyth was declared Best Writer, Print.

The Guardian won in the National Newspaper category and Shortlist took the Mainstream Magazine prize. Regional Games Column of the year went to Games Addict and Dan Slingsby.

Eurogamer salutes Pat Garratt, who deserves all the awards he won 10 times over and also probably a crown and a giant cardboard cheque for a million pounds. Read our blog for more on why.

    Just one award? I thought EuroGamer would cinch the "Blandest Review" and "Most Predictable Scores" awards. Here's an idea. EG also stands for Ellie Gibson, perhaps the site should be all about her and written by her! Tenfold improvement!

    You're so edgy, metalangel. I nearly cut myself whilst reading your post.

    "Most Predictable Scores"

    You just let your imagination run wild on that one, no ?
    Though I hardly think having controversial score a good thing, and while we're at it Wolverine: Origins a 5/10 is wrong.

    VG247..?????

    Whats so special about that site?.....i read it most days, but do not find it particulary outstanding in any way whatsoever.

    Just another games web site, posting the same stuff as everyone else.

    @Bagpuss

    Personally I really like it because it's not full of idiots like Kotaku.
  • metalangel #6 2 years ago

    Those two awards go hand in hand, miiiguel. "If this is the sort of game you like, then this is the game for you! 7/10"
  • mcbi4kh2 #7 2 years ago

    best website

    Can't really argue with that, to think I used to go to IGN for my gaming news before I found out about EG.

    But 4/10 for Risen? Noooo
  • MrGilder #9 2 years ago

    Well done OLL for the win at last! 7/10

    "Blandest Review"

    You clearly haven't read an IGN review recently. Most of them read like they plagiarised the instruction manual.
  • GamesConnoisseur #11 2 years ago

    People just simply annoyed with EG score when THEIR games are scored LOWER than they would LIKE to see.

    That the truth whatever we say the right or wrong of the score, its all subjective and nothing is truly impartial but at least EG is coming at this at a more professional angle!

    Still congratulations to EG and whether I get disappointed with some scorings, I always enjoy reading EG! Including the rabid fanboys who entertains me as well!

    Edge won Best Magazine? How?!? :o

    Seriously, that magazine went down the pan years ago IMHO, which is when I stopped buying it. Half of the magazine seems to be adverts and the standard of the reviews has slipped with some of them reading like a university graduate's first attempt at oh-look-at-me-I'm-so-clever journalism. Pretentious piece of '#&*%$! ;)
  • RexRunti #13 2 years ago

    @Darren

    If you stopped reading it 10 years ago how can you comment on the current content?
  • metalangel #14 2 years ago

    @Kinkymong: No, but I do read PC Gamer who both write excellent reviews and remember to give games to reviewers who are both knowledgable and interested in that genre. That's why people were so surprised by EG's Madden review this year: the writer knew his stuff and was enthusiastic about it.

    Pat Garratt sounds like a bit of a cowboy to me.
  • RobotRocker #16 2 years ago

    Waiting for the inevitable Ram Raider rant which should be hilarious.

    Congratulations EG! 3 years on the trot. You must be mightily hung over today. Or are you still drinking?
  • Darren #19 2 years ago

    @RexRunti - I stopped buying it some three years ago (where the hell did you get ten years from?) but I still flick through it in my local newsagent every now and then, usually to see the review scores. I have less reason to do it now though as those can be found online, often in this site's forums. Put it this way... I've seen no evidence of improvement in the magazine since I stopped buying it.

    I've stopped buying most videogames magazines now though, almost all of them are poorly written and frequently out of date compared with what you can get from the internet (unsurprisingly) and the official ones are typically biased toward one format. When there's video previews and reviews free online and in numerous quantities why the hell do need to throw away £4+ on a magazine?

    You're right about that. Magazines have the upper hand on credibility though, as "the internetz" needs to feed itself on news all the time, hence "rumours", which I hate.
  • peteb #21 2 years ago

    @Darren

    do you ever feel like GamesTm is going the same way? I see their reviews getting more pretentious by the month... Its kind of worse than Edge in a way sometimes, try hard pretentiousness is worse than actual pretentiousness. :D AH well, the rest of GamesTM is good though.

    Also, congrats Eurogamer, you win my best website and my heart every day of every year.

    Without wanting to sound too negative, they are basically awarding UK sites for copying what US sites have been doing for years. VG247 is basically kotaku with scones and jam. They even cover and cross-link each other so often that it's hard to tell them apart in terms of content a lot of the time. Still, great to see a new site doing well for itself and I'm always pleased to see EG staffers do well for themselves.
  • Shinetop #23 2 years ago

    Who the hell reads Edge for the reviews, anyway? They always felt like filler material they run because gaming magazines are 'supposed' to have reviews. I'd rather they ditch the reviews altogether and expand the interviews, industry features and time extend bits, because those are excellent. I can read a review wherever I want, and it'll mean nothing. But no website offers the industry insights and interviews like Edge does.

    VG247 is a fine blog.
    I like Joystiq too, their humor, page layout and comment highlight system is so much better than that mess know as Kotaku, even if average comments while funny, may not be insightful as the latter's.

    So you would expect Official Playstation Monthly to cover Xbox games? Interesting thought process there...
  • morriss #26 2 years ago

    "VG247 is basically kotaku with scones and jam. "

    That's ridiculous. Seriously. You obv. don't read the site. VG247 is games news, Kotaku is gaming tittle-tattle info. Also, VG247 updates about 10 times more per day.
  • Turrican #27 2 years ago

    Am I the only person to have never heard of VG247? Ooops, will check it out now..

    Well done Eurogamer for winning your award. A word of warning though, recent reviews of, among others, Darkfall, Fifa10 and Operation Flashpoint DR have all been below your usual standard, if you want to remain the best you'll need to stamp out abberations like those.
  • hilts #28 2 years ago

    i agree with shinetop - Edge may not be at its lofy heights of a few years ago but still a good read for articles like time extend and making of...
    Most magazines are terrible - bought a ps3 slim recently so checked out the ps3 magazines - all were terrible without a doubt!
    Still loving one life left podcasts too!
  • Darren #29 2 years ago

    @jefranklin18 - No but I expect them to be honest instead of pretending that every other format is inferior which is what the likes of OXM360 do (probably because the average age of their readers is 12). Official magazines suck IMO. Unofficial ones tend to be better, I always had the utmost respect for Cube magazine for example as they frequently pointed out when a multiformat game was better on the Xbox or PS3 than the Gamecube. Such honestly is a rare thing these days in a single format magazine.

    10 years old and another nice award in the bag. A good year for EG.

    Downhill all the way now! :)

    (Attention karma Nazis - That last bit was a j o k e)
  • jefranklin18 #31 2 years ago

    @Darren,

    I guess I see what you're saying but I am not sure as a PS3 user I want to have OPSM say "Arkham Asylum on PS3 is good, but on Xbox it's even better". At the end of the day the single-format mags will always be propaganda pieces to some extent - you just have to pick the style of journalism that most appeals.

    If you want to see a balanced view then you would have to go for a multi-format mag, and even then there would be some level of bias. Heck, I remember the old Your Computer magazine only really covered the Sinclair and Vic machines back in the 80s despite there being a lot more choice back then.
