UK charts: FIFA denies Alan Wake win

Skate 3, Lost Planet 2 finish high.

EA's 2010 FIFA World Cup has beaten off three big-name newcomers to top the UK all-formats chart for a third week.

The debutantes were Alan Wake in second, Lost Planet 2 in third and Skate 3 in fifth.

Just Dance kept on wiggling in fourth.

The latter half of the top 10 was familiar - Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in sixth, Modern Warfare 2 in seventh, Final Fantasy XIII in eighth, Wii Fit Plus in ninth and Wii Sports Resort in 10th.

PS3 game 3D Dot Game Heroes missed the all-formats top 40 and finished 15th on the PS3 chart.

Lips: I Love the '80s and Nier entered the top 40 for the first time this week.

I would imagine with the World Cup 'fever' and the possibility that all the formats are included in the sales (correct me if I'm wrong) I guess Remedy can't be too disappointed. Hope they get rewarded for their efforts :)

Let's see RDR beat it next week.

Creative future of the Industry? Calm down there buddy, it looks like a fun game, but it's not doing much new.

Alan Wake being 360 only and fairly audience specific it's done very well.
  • markymark22 #5 2 years ago

I dont have a 360 anymore but i must say alan wake looks good.
  • Darren #6 2 years ago

Given the number of formats the FIFA World Cup game is on, it's no surprise that the single-format Alan Wake could not knock it off the top spot. Will Red Dead Redemption be able to? I say yes, it will.

Alan Wake is #1 on the individual SKU chart.

    1) Alan Wake (360)
    2) Just Dance (Wii)
    3) Lost Planet 2 (360)
    4) FIFA World Cup 2010 (PS3)
    5) FIFA World Cup 2010 (360)

    > the creative future of this industry

Copying 8 bit games (and apparently not that well) but with some new graphics intended to appeal to retro fans? Creative!
  • SilverNeon #10 2 years ago

FF13 got a bit of a boost there thanks to the price drop, I'm not really suprised by EA selling while World Cup fever is hot I just hope they don't get lazy with Fifa 11 and not make some much needed changes to improve the game.
Monster Hunter Tri is still hanging in there in individual formats which is good to see.

I'm very surprised at Lost Planet 2 entering the charts at no. 3 though given the mediocre reviews it has been getting across the web. :o

They made me cancel my pre-order for the PC version anyway.

It's kinda expected that a big hyped release will chart highly during its first weeks.

It's like Ultravox's Vienna being kept from number slot in 1981 by Joe Dolce's Shaddap You Face.

    Perhaps not...

But the mass market does tend to rule the roost, and I heard that football is popular.
  • Retro_ #14 2 years ago

Got LOST PLANET 2 and 3D dot Game heros last week. LOST PLANET 2 co-op is pretty awesome to be honest, AI is a bit naff but overal it's a decent 7.5/10 game, the reviews are a little puzzling!.

3D GDH is a great little game and a rare one too by the sounds of it.
  • actionfitz #15 2 years ago

a friend of mine traded in: Left for Dead 2, Bioshock 2 and Just Cause 2 for Skate 3 in GAME at the weekend, he still had to pay £2...

I died a little inside when I heard that. I also smacked him upside the head and called him a dick :)
  • GamesConnoisseur #16 2 years ago

Lost Planet 2 I didn't really enjoy a lot, so mixed and middlings reviews is pretty understandable. I really felt Capcom gone backward after the excellent and enjoyable first entry. Should hav focused on more important areas to improve instead of going all co op/AI which compares miserably to L4D2 which outclassed LP2.

Alan Wake... Great Game and made my weekend! That all I ll say and throw 7/10 back at me not going to change HOW I enjoyed the damned good game.

3D Dot Hero... Only played up to after the first Sage, loved the style and retro feel but too much of me too and doesn't feel like it was trying to better the sources materials. IE I could just have go back to Zelda and get more from it that way.

Perhaps for newcomers it's felt more fresh and later levels more fun? Alan Wake just hijacked my attention over the weekend.

Alan Wake is great so far, the 7 seems fair to me. Whaddya know, Ellie got it spot on...

@It's kinda expected that a big hyped release will chart highly during its first weeks. @

    And itr has it has outsold all the other titles if you look at platform, as mentioned earlier;

    1) Alan Wake (360)
    2) Just Dance (Wii)
    3) Lost Planet 2 (360)
    4) FIFA World Cup 2010 (PS3)
    5) FIFA World Cup 2010 (360)

cheeky_Grizzly: "3D Dot Game Heros missed the top 40 because it wasn't actually stocked on the high street, ANYWHERE! I know because i tried to buy it."

It's the type of game which SCREAMS that it requires a demo *and* to be sold through PSN. I quite fancy it myself but just by looking at it I knew most places wouldn't touch stock with a shitty stick :(
  • hardtech #21 2 years ago

I ended up going into Game on friday, saw the price of 3D Dot Heroes, walked out, went onto shopto and ordered it (And Bad Company 2) for £25 and had it by saturday. Game was the only place they had it in Brighton and at full retail price no less.
  • GreyBeard #22 2 years ago

I assume Nier's belated appearance is a result of the heavy discounting, its been out what 2-3 weeks at this point? It certainly threw me seeing it on the same week's chart as Alan Wake!
  • ignatiusjreilly #23 2 years ago

    @cheeky_Grizzly

I agree with you completely, it is a big problem. It;s part of the reason I always champion digital distribution which tends to help even out the playing field. Games like Torchlight and Killing Floor can do massively well on Steam even up against Modern Warfare 2, but I'm sure that wasn't reflected in retail PC games sales.
  • One_Vurfed_Gwrx #24 2 years ago

Seems to be becoming too common that new titles aren't appearing on the high-street, I've still never seen a wild copy of Fragile for Wii, and I only just saw the Sakura Taisen Wii game in one shop several weeks after launch. Muramasa I only ever saw in HMV stores, and even Tatsunoko Vs Capcom was pretty much HMV only until a few weeks after release from what I could see. Mostly seems to affect Wii games but with 3D DGH the problem seems to be spreading across formats now...
  • dingo75 #25 2 years ago

Good that Splinter Cell is going down the charts fast.
Maybe we get a real SC next time nUBI!
  • jag10 #26 2 years ago

Lost Planet 2 would of sold more if it got fair reviews. according to ign it's so bad you should get your controller insured lol.
  • Eraysor #27 2 years ago

Having played Alan Wake I've decided either EG underrates scary games, or I overrate them; the Alan Wake and Dead Space reviews are the two most "wrong" ones on the site in my opinion.
  • mingster #28 2 years ago

Lol @ StooMonster that's the funniest thing i've read in a long time.. nice one.
  • metallicorphan #29 2 years ago

Alan Wake has only been out for three days(not included today)

    good game though
  • MuchoPies #30 2 years ago

Entry 35 - Napoleon: Total Way ???? Me think that should be Total War :)
  • Retroid #31 2 years ago

It's not new for some games to just "not be" in shops. It happened in the 8bit era, it happened in the previous generation (trying to find a copy of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath on release was like finding unicorn dust), it's happening now.

    :/

It's the sort of situation digital distribution would help with, even if it was just demos to get people interested.
  • Eraysor #32 2 years ago

Incidentally I have only ever seen a physical copy of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for the DS once, one day after it was released, then it appears to have fallen off the face of the planet.
  • Retroid #33 2 years ago

That's why I do so much of my game shopping online.

That, and usually MUCH cheaper prices! \o/
  • PoundHound #34 2 years ago

Nice to see Nier sneak in there. After a very bland opening couple of hours, it becomes a rather pleasant diversion (except for Kaime's out of place swearing).

As for Alan Wake, Although I'm only on the 3rd Episode, it could be my game of the year so far. Aside from some of the facial animations it looks really lovely and the gameplay is quite exciting in places.

  • jefranklin18 #35 2 years ago

EG: I hate Minority Report and will not be getting it on Blu-Ray no matter how much you try to bugger up my clicking on the Comments link.

    /rant over

Regarding the high street shops not stocking games like 3D Dot Game Heroes, the problem is that a lot of games purchases are made from supermarkets and just like I struggle to get palm sugar in my local Sainsburys (even though the dozy idiots stock fish sauce), stuff that is not going to fly off the shelves is not really going to be stocked. As such, games need to be "safe bets" before the store buyer will pick them up.
  • rashes #36 2 years ago

    @Eraysor

Couldn't agree more... was disappointed when I read both reviews but then thankfully bought the games anyway.
Alan Wake is excellent.. it may not be doing that much that's new but when it does it this well who cares (same argument goes for Dead Space).
    Made my weekend.
  • Kenshin001 #37 2 years ago

"Alan Wake being 360 only and fairly audience specific it's done very well."

Apparently it sold about 36,000 copies.
  • monkeywithnoeyes #38 2 years ago

Alan Wakes only been out 3days hasn't it?
  • sfp_noodle #39 2 years ago

"Reviews denied Alan Wake, not Fifa"

Actually, EG was one of only a handful of sites that scores it below an 8/10. Fifa World Cup beat it because its on every platform, not to mention there are hundreds of millions of football fans around the world. Alan Wake unfortunately does not share that kind of popularity.
  • smelly #40 2 years ago

If it wasnt so nice and hot outside - i'd rent alan wake. I wont buy it though, due to the shortness of it.
  • DwarfyP #41 2 years ago

@smelly "i'd rent alan wake. I wont buy it though, due to the shortness of it."

All what? 8-20 hours of it depending if you play Nightmare mode or not. Thats a pretty lengthy single player only game.
Glad they didn't pad it out with crap just to make it longer.
