Ubisoft explains HAWX storyline News

PC Xbox 360 PlayStation 3
News by Robert Purchese

Ubisoft has released details of the back-story to upcoming flight combat game Tom Clancy's HAWX.

HAWX is set in 2012, but the HAWX squadron itself began life during World War II as a special unit set up to pinch enemy planes and use them to sneak behind enemy lines and take reconaissance photos.

Naturally the work dried up somewhat in 1945, but the High Altitude Warfare group survived and became increasingly secretive and experimental, testing prototype technology and wearing sunglasses indoors and all sorts.

It soon became known as the Experimental Squadron, a nickname that crashed helpfully into the back of High Altitude Warfare to give us HAWX. No doubt enticed by the prospect of snazzy insignia, all the top pilots ended up in HAWX, zipping around over Utah making the gutsiest moves you ever saw, probably.

Fast forward to 2012, though, and HAWX is called upon to act in a conflict between one of the world's biggest Private Military Companies (PMCs) and the USA.

So now you know.

HAWX the game is due out on PC, PS3 and 360 this autumn, and is being assembled by Ubisoft's Bucharest studio, which is planning to include similar squadron command features to the ones found in the Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter series.

You'll get stabilisers for your planes, too, so you can ease your way in to the cockpit, and there will be online battles for you and up to 15 friends.

HAWX will be one of the titles on show in Paris next week at Ubisoft's UbiDays event, and if you'd like to see more of it, be sure to pop over to our Tom Clancy's HAWX gallery to see what it looks like.

Always nice to see a new flight game, although keeping it feeling fresh throughout is always a challenge. Should be good though, especially if it has co-op missions.

HAWX? Thats some air-punching cheeseyness right there.

Tom Clancy doesn't make much of anything with his name on it, other than a few gold-embossed-cover macho cockwaving airport novels during the 80s.

He doesn't make money from Tom Clancy games anymore.

Ubi purchased the right to use his name but not pay him anything further last year. It also means he won't be involved in future 'Tom Clancy' games, but then it appears he only really allowed them to use his story ideas in the past and that was the extent of his involvement.

I'm sure Clancy would've taken his ideas as far as he wanted anyway. It's nice to see an author take games seriously to the point they start-up a company to make games, and i loved the first R6 game and the book.

He might not make money from any further titles released but I'm sure he'll be able to dry his tears on the $60 million that Ubisoft paid for the rights.

Yeah, I doubt it really bothers him. Not everyone can have artistic integrity...

Eh.. you forgot that they take bombing missions from Ghost Recon members, it's a little like End War where all Clancy guys and girls meet up I guess.

What is it with Ubisoft and 2012? Perhaps the destination they are going to hit stems from the memories of Desmond Miles...

I usually get a hard-on for all things Clancy, but this leaves me strangely flaccid.
