The Secret World Preview

MMO PC Preview by Christian Donlan

10 September, 2009

Page 1 of 3. Page 2 ->

The Secret World is an evocative, luxurious kind of title, a handful of words that conjure up a riddled sprawl of subterranean canals, dew-dropped gateways and darkened under-streets slotted in and around our own humdrum neighbourhoods and cities. It promises a glimpse of a murkier, sexier kind of life that unfolds just out of reach, on the other side of the raindrops, perhaps, or tucked in somewhere behind the fireplace. It practically bubbles with conspiracies, too, and we all love those - presumably because they allow you to believe that everything will make sense if you just stare at it long enough, that there's a governing force at work, however malignant, and that it operates within a galaxy of rules and restrictions, unfailingly listening to a quiet heartbeat of cause and effect. It all sounds a bit like a game, really.

Well, now it is one: an MMO designed by the cheerily unpredictable Ragnar Tornquist, creator of adventure games Dreamfall and The Longest Journey, and a man whose name suggests he belongs inside a fantasy universe - possibly smelting something nasty - rather than at the helm of one. (You can read an interview with Tornquist elsewhere on the site.) On the day I meet him at PAX, Tornquist finds himself in a secret world all of his own, wedged into a flimsy prefab alleyway threaded in amongst the slick bulk of Harmonix's booth where someone appears to be administering an unforgivable shoeing to Eleanor Rigby. "I never thought I'd get tired of the Beatles, but f**king hell," says Tornquist, speaking into a microphone even though I'm about a foot away and one of only three other people in the room. "And I was really looking forward to that game," he sighs.

Well, I'm still looking forward to his game at any rate, and not just because it wasn't put together following close consultations with Yoko Ono. Nobody's seen much of The Secret World in the first two years of its development, however. Early videos, particularly some brooding CGI of a knitwear-clad lady with fearsome highlights, made the game look grown-up and entirely non-traditional - actually, if you took away the shotguns and demons, it could have been an advert for an up-market Eastern skiwear manufacturer - but hard details have been scarce.

'The Secret World' Screenshot 1

Tornquist's dabbled with MMOs once before, with Funcom's Anarchy Online. That didn't have milkshakes and demons in it, however.

Today, Tornquist's willing to pull back the curtain a little bit, and has a thick stack of PowerPoint slides to prove it. He's presenting one of the game's central elements: the trio of secret societies at the heart of the narrative, the three major forces that have shaped his hidden back-stories.

But let's wind things in a little to take stock of what we already know. The Secret World tells the tale of magic-wielding heroes waging an underground war against "zombies, vampires, and that kind of thing" (Tornquist's words) and is set within a dense muddle of conspiracy theories, old wives' ramblings and urban legends. An early teaser suggested that it might have room for all of them, in fact, reeling off everything from secret chambers discovered beneath Arctic wastelands, rumours of a massive cavity within Earth itself, Stonehenge, telepathy, Masonic links within the US government and, naturally, Atlantis. If the development team had let the film run for another twenty seconds, they'd probably have had enough room to connect Lord Lucan and Shergar to that time somebody leaked a pre-release PDF copy of Jamie's Italian onto the internet, and even found the space to cram in a few Your Mom jokes to boot.

Basically Tornquist has stolen the inside of Umberto Eco's head and turned it into a game. Intriguing.

This sounds so interesting and being a huge fan of his previous work, ala Dreamfall and The Longest Journey, the premise behind The Secret World sounds really promising. It certainly seems to be trying something a little different in the MMO field and that is only a good thing in the current flood of titles.

I am a little worried that such an ambitious title seems to be garnering such a low key following and attention though (as is evident in this article), but maybe this will change as the project ramps up and draws nearer to release. Could be a while yet from the sound of it though.

Nice idea.

And that's all this seems to be: lots of high-concept discussions, artwork and pre-rendered CG but no content.

But then again, it's from Funcom, so what else would you expect?

I have to agree with iokthemonkey, I love the premise. An MMO set in a modren day world with magic etc sound brillant but it will need some solid content first that makes the cost worth while.

I personally am wary because of past experience with Funcom: I really like the sound of it but I'll wait for more details and some more "meat" before getting all that enthusiastic about it.

I'm actually relieved theres little to go on at this stage; unnecessary hype and promises make for dissapointment, non-delivery and fizzling out. It also 'kinda' adds to the mystery feel and conspiracy nature of it all. You can gather snippets but not the whole truth.
I'm going with Templar if it ever gets to that stage! If theres a demon in the village, burn it down! Leave subtlety for the indecissive sissies.
My interest is officially piqued...

If it wasn't being made by Funcom this would have a chance. Plus Tornquist had a hand in Anarchy Online, although whether that's good or bad is hard to say, but at least he's got some experience.

Hmmm, this doesn't actually sound quite as interesting as I'd imagined - From some of the concept art I'd somehow got the idea there'd be some 'Imajica-esque' travelling to other worlds.

Still, definitely one to keep an eye on.

Those screenshots make the game look rubbish, whilst the preview is making it harder to wait for more of the game to be unveiled.

Funcom really isn't as bad a company as many make it out to be. Their largest mistake was with Age of Conan, which they are desperately trying to fix (and Eurogamer rated it 7 out of 10 in their latest re-review). Plus, they're behind The Longest Journey and its fairly sound sequel Dreamfall (an atrocity gameplay-wise, but thanks to Tonquist the contrived story and its presentation was pretty good).

Considering how closely Tornquist is involved in this project, the world of this game should be deep, detailed, intricate and sophisticated. The setting should be rich and alive, its depths grand. The gameplay, on the other hand... For that I will have to wait and see.

I am really looking forward to this but a little put off by the screenshots. They seem somewhat against the atmospheric/muted character of the teasers/concept art stuff. Wait and see I guess. I was sort of hoping this would be the MMO that steered away from technicolour particle effects and towards something a little more refined.

Interesting, but the article reads like a fanboy write-up. A little starstruck, Christian?

I stopped using my imagination when I saw a guy firing a shotgun (in a decidedly non-action-pose) at something that looks quite shotgun-proof.

Oh well, there's always World of Darkness to come (and By God, DUST 514's concept shows CCP aren't one-trick ponies).

I thought the premis of conspiracy and demons in everyday society was what the shin megami series was always about. How is it suddenly a new concept just because someone decided to put it into a MMO game. Even the bloody CGI looks like it was ripped straight from a Shim Megami game, in fact that's what I originally though this was.

This and Jumpgate are the only two titles that might tempt me into finally playing an MMO (well APB looks good to but to my mind at least it doesn't quite fit into the MMO genre). Jumpgate for the potential for amazing space battles and this because . . . well because I like Tonquist really and in the absence of Dreamfall Chapters this might be quite fun.

However, it's quite probable that the more details i hear about the game the less interesting it will get; at the moment it's all intrigue and cool little videos but closer to release it may well just sound like yet another unappealing MMO. I'm just going to wait and see with this one but I really hope it will pique my interest enough to give it a whirl.

The largest doubt I have is how this fits into the MMO space.

It sounds like it will have a rather cnvoluted and intriguing storyline, which is rgeat when yuo cans et the tone and the pace, but in an MMO, when you reach the end of what is available that storyline stops and you are greete dwith the grind until you reach the next content update. This may well cause the game to get stale if story is its biggest point.

The implementation of such a system in SWKOTOR will be a good indicator of how this pans out.

It also means that there is an omnipotent force in the unvierse beyond a players control. The Narrator. Say you spend content patch A working with your cabal to stock resources and claim land A, suddenly, when the story progresses, land A is a bit shit and the faction your cabal works for has took a turn you didnt expect and now doesnt fit your own, personalised story.

Not make or break issues, but definite concerns

Still intrigued but, like some others, I think the art style of the actual game is a bit of a let down. I was hoping for something a lot darker really but would have at least expected something more grounded in reality, with the fantastical elements standing out that much more.

Loved this part of the article by the way: "At the opposite end of the spectrum are the Illuminati (a word which, all too suspiciously, Microsoft Office claims not to be aware of)". Although, Mozilla Firefox also seems to be under the same shroud (but that doesn't even recognise its own name, so I wouldn't read too much into that :)

Yeah.. you're right that it's not a new concept, but it's not something shin megami laid the foundations for or anything either. It's been around for a long time before that.

"That, along with the drip-drip of new concept art, all leathery uniforms and glinting weaponry, does a lot to dispel any lingering fears that The Secret World is too brainy and delicate to coalesce into a real game."

It also does a lot to confirm my fears that it's not the brainy original MMO they were talking about and more a generic MMO where all the walls of text in quest dialog windows basically boil down to "Kill X" and "Bring Y to Z".

Intrigued, but still not getting my hopes up.

I'm not sure I agree.

They've been running a pretty intensive and involving PR strategy for, well, over a year now. Where forum partitiaters are tasked with solving various mysterious riddles that bring them all over the internet. Most people just havn't heard about it because most of it never made it into the mainstream media.

Which is odd really, because from what I've heard it's been a fairly awesome ride which has probably taken quite a bit of effort on the PR team - yet it's only made it out to the people who are really interested in finding it. Then again, the exclusive nature of the PR might be part of it's charm?

This looks very interesting, especially from the creator of beloved Dreamfall, but the question is - will there really be an xbox 360 version? Knowing so many MMOs which ended up not showing their faces on x360, including Age Of Conan, I think there will be problems.

BTW, I wonder if April Secret World tokens will convert in something like closed beta key?

Call me sceptic but all the MMO's who tried to be different were
A Not really different, so there was nothing special there
B were to different, so only a small amount of people liked them

Eve Online is the exception on that rule. The rest went down the drain.

This preview didn't really tell us much new? I felt like I had to read between the lines here but I wanted you to just come out and say what you thought. I think you thought that whilst the ideas were interesting it could be a case of same old same old.... but maybe I'm wrong.

Also, I was just thinking - I remember the community for Vanguard was amazing a year or so before it was released... then all the hype about AoC.... someone should make a meta game about pre-release of MMOs since most times the leading up to it is more exciting than the event itself! :P

Lets face it no-one is going to play 3 or 4 MMO,s a month due to cost and the simple fact that the time-sink needed to get the same rewards than a equivalent single-player experience.

Who says you have to be subbed to more than one at any given time?

You do realise that you can pick and choose which ones you decide to play and when? Not everyone likes the same game, some people like to take vacations in other mmos when they are on a break from their main one, some just hop from game to game, others may sub to several at once.

Its all about choice.
