Take-Two drops Champions Online News

MMO PC Xbox 360 News by Oli Welsh

18 December, 2008

Take-Two's president Ben Feder has told investors the the company will no longer publish Cryptic's superhero MMO, Champions Online.

Cryptic was acquired by Atari last week, raising the question of whether Take-Two's 2K Games label would be able to go ahead with the release of Champions.

Feder answered that question simply in a conference call yesterday."We no longer intend to publish the MMOG Champions Online due to Atari's acquisition of Cryptic," he said, as reported by GameSpot.

We can assume that Atari will be the one to put Champions on shelves, now. The game is still on course for a release in the second quarter of 2009 for PC and Xbox 360, according to Cryptic's Jack Emmert.

Well that's... yeah. Hope it doesn't get lost between publishers, but I can't see it changing the game at all, considering how late on in the development it is.

So does this replace city of heroes, or does city of heroes just die after this is released? How different will they be?

I'm wondering that too. I've held of on trying CoX because I knew this was coming, but are they really different games? I know CO is a bit more consolified, but like Deus Ex 1 (pretty much left intact), or Deus Ex 2?

I'm hoping it'll be like Final Fantasy XI and you can play on both 360 and PC on the same account, so I have easy access all the time.

TBH im surprised NCsoft havent picked this up. Given CoH and all.

@strangeed

They will both continue as NCsoft own and maintain CoX now.

Probably just die. Most of the CoX players I know (me included) are ready and waiting to move to Champions.

I think it's CoX but with more real time combat... Personally i don't like the sound of that, i like to think when i fight, not mash buttons....

It reminds me more of Marvel Ultimate Alliance than an MMO. That's a good thing, an MMO with real time combat as well as the usual skills & buffs of an MMO should be a good combination.

Hope this doesn't delay, or worst, cancel the launch.
