Super Street Fighter IV unveiled

News of the game breaks early.

Tomorrow's Street Fighter announcement has spilled, and turned out to be no less than Super Street Fighter IV.

French website JV247 broke the news and offers a handful of screenshots, which feature old hand T Hawk and new fighter Juri, who's apparently an evil Asian girl working for Seth.

Those details come from various forums making unsubstantiated but convincing claims.

T Hawk, for example, is supposed to be protecting Juri, as she has been brainwashed by Shadowloo. The story apparently takes place a year after Street Fighter IV.

Other new characters rumoured are Dudley, Ibuki, Cody, Adon, Dee Jay, Makoto, Guy and Hakan (an Arabic fighter obsessed with oil).

Speculation also suggests fighters gain access to two Ultras now, one of which may be an Air Ultra. There is talk of the Bonus Stage returning too, and apparently engine changes that make Super Street Fighter IV feel very different to the core SFIV game.

    It's 90's all over again.
  • BigE0n #3 2 years ago

    Why is this not DLC?

Seems they have gone back to there old ways of releasing the same game but with a slight variation.
  • TONYgr #4 2 years ago

    the second coming!for real!!!
  • DrR0b3rts #5 2 years ago

Looks like the stage backgrounds are virtually identical to SF4 though! Could do with a break from the barge, street etc.
  • Ace_McCloud #6 2 years ago

Hmmm. This news kind of upsets me. Can't they just release this as an expansion so I can download the new characters and stuff. I only have room for one Street Fighter.
  • Peew971 #7 2 years ago

Isn't this screwing with people who bought SFIV only 7 months ago?! How about a DLC update?
  • JohnnyWashnGo #8 2 years ago

Damn - I will have to buy this so that I don't miss out on any tourneys that are using it.

Glad its a new product rather than DLC.

I'm doubting that there'd be a way to DLC it, if they're changing the game engine of how it plays, providing this is true.
  • actionfitz #10 2 years ago

    Huzzah! if it's DLC

Screw you Capcom! if its a standalone £40+ rehash of SF4...
  • JohnnyWashnGo #11 2 years ago

I really want the bonus stages to return as well - I hope they confirm this aspect of SSFIV tomorrow.

Actually - bonus stages in the same vein as this bonus mini games in Tatsunoko Vs Capcom would rock !
  • KujiGhost #12 2 years ago

So should I trade in SFIV just now to get a decent return on my money?
  • M_of_the_sys #13 2 years ago

    I'll stick with SFII.
  • menage #14 2 years ago

I'll wait till it hits 20--30 bucks then, I'm not buying another SF fullprice this quick.
  • smernicki #15 2 years ago

i'm happy enough with SF4, only got it 4 months ago.
  • Ranger101 #16 2 years ago

Eventhubs has the best of the best of the nearly substantiated rumours.

    Woohoo! 2nd Quarter 2010?
  • roz123 #17 2 years ago

I will skip this and wait for Super Street Fighter IV Turbo
  • AbyssUK #18 2 years ago

But we all want Marvel vs Capcom 3.. why waste time making this.
  • dopeonthetable #19 2 years ago

I think that for most people who play SFIV quite regularly as I do, adding something such as a second Ultra, much less an 'Air Ultra', really does constitute a totally new game. If every character receives a secondary Ultra, as far as I'm concerned we'd have to start from scratch in terms of our character/ match-up knowledge.

Whether or not the changes will improve the game is another matter entirely, all I'm saying is that the scope of these changes should not be trivialised as some people here are doing.
  • raion #20 2 years ago

I agree with dopeonthetable. for competitive players, even only a slight balance update is a big deal.
still, it's not the nineties anymore. we have internet, and we have patches on consoles.
how many players do you think are gonna go quietly to the store to buy patched version after patched version of the same game? only a very small percentage, those who play fighting game professionally.

oh, no, wait. they play in the arcades actually...

(I'm the one to talk. I still remember when I brought back virtua fighter 4 to buy virtua fighter 4 evo...)

  • Fodder #21 2 years ago

Surely it's going to be an arcade game first? Talk of how the console version might be delivered seems a bit premature.
  • Machetazo #22 2 years ago

VF4 Evo was a fair upgrade on the initial release. No shame in doing that, raion. :)
  • kinky_mong #23 2 years ago

Right I'm starting a boycott group for this. Prehaps Capcom will fly me to their offices to see how this is more than just DLC for the price of a full game.
  • jaguarwong #24 2 years ago

This really should and could be DLC - even if it's expensive DLC.

The ultra gauge already has 2 segments for no useful reason.
  • Deckard1 #25 2 years ago

    And so the milking begins
  • Wildsleven #26 2 years ago

nice 1, day one purchase for me :D
  • TRUTH #27 2 years ago

    MAKE IT A 2D GAME - NOT 2.5D!!!!!!!!!!
  • OwningXylophone #28 2 years ago

Before you start talking of a boycott why not wait until the official announcement and see how this is to be implemented. It's not unheard of for a complete overhaul via DLC, look at Samurai Warriors 2 on the 360 for proof. They released the 2gb Extreme Legends download that completely overhauled the graphics and some of the gameplay whilst adding new characters and levels, sure it cost about 2000msp, but still better than them releasing a whole new game.

Oh, boy. I just knew that this was going to happen. I thought that Capcom said that there would be no more SF 4 revisions? I thought they said that there would be no Final Fight or Street Fighter 3 characters (probably to please whiny fanboys out there for those)? But...it's Capcom we're talking about here. You know they love milking series such as this.

I just hope that they release this as DLC. Sure this stuff has worked in the past, but there should really be no reason to keep making more versions of the same game as of today. If you're going to make a fighting game such as this, why not just delay it or some sort to have things added in as intended? Wouldn't this hurt the fighting game franchise in general as of today?

    Well into this...

Capcom seem to be teasing in the meantime :p

  • eiocreative #31 2 years ago

Can they tune the difficulty to 'fun' this time please? It's the most aggrivating game I have ever played. Had such fond memories of it too from SNES days. Either I am now too old now to be any good at these games or it fucking cheats..it fucking cheats!!!

  • 4thVariety #32 2 years ago

From a consumer perspective I'd want Super4 to replace 4 in the shelfs, and people owning 4 get to buy it as the DLC-Expansion it de facto is. This would also make sure that there can be cross-version multiplayer, which always results in a more lively community. Splitting it off into different branches makes no sense really.

Knowing Capcom however, I suppose they rather try to sell it on its own for $60 bucks, not caring if they make less money and piss off more people that way.

$15 DLC would surely be stretching it.
  • PeacockDreams #33 2 years ago

  • Hobo #34 2 years ago

Read it twice now, and i can't see anywhere where it says anything about this game being a full release, OR DLC, so i'm not sure it's worth people getting in a mess over it just yet.

Capcom already hammered the game with DLC (regardless of your opinions as to it's credibility) so i can't imagine they'd want to stop now.
  • Br0ken_Engli5h #35 2 years ago

Yeah, fuck Capcom for daring to announce a sequel a year after it hit arcades!

*goes back to playing Fifa/CoD:WaW/Guitar Hero/Battlefield*

  • neonemesis #36 2 years ago

As someone who doesn't really like DLC, I'd much prefer this to be a physical release so I wouldn't be missing anything when I finally get around to buying Street Fighter IV.

I can however understand why it would be better suited as DLC so I see both sides.
  • Sonic_D #37 2 years ago

If you make the Guile & Vega Ultra motion as easy as the rest of the cast I will give you £40.
  • Beltsu #38 2 years ago

F...! I bought SF4, and now they're releasing an expansion??? Capcom is more money-sucker the M$ these days.
  • sailesh #39 2 years ago

  • sega #40 2 years ago

Cody!!!!!! Guy!!!!! Awesome! Hope they wear their Final Fight costumes.

I was kind of expecting a Super Street Fighter 4 (though thought a Champion Edition would come first lol) - was only a matter of time. I'm not complaining though - I always love new Street Fighter updates. Though this time I'm hoping they'll announce a Wii version after Tatsunuko Vs Capcom sells bucket loads!
  • Razorus #41 2 years ago

That's annoying. At least there's an Arab fighter now! But of course he's a stereotype.
  • jeebthegreat #42 2 years ago

so glad i didn't get sfIV yet then...
  • owl #43 2 years ago

At least there's an Arab fighter now! But of course he's a stereotype.

everyone in the game is a stereotype : )
  • Velios #44 2 years ago

Hey guys! don't forget that alternate costumes will be available via DLC for all the new characters at a later date!!!!! Yay!!!!

It's Street Fighter, and I love it :)
  • DAN.E.B #45 2 years ago

fuck the new game! just charge us the earth for more costumes!!!
  • ChthonicEcho #46 2 years ago

The ultra gauge already has 2 segments for no useful reason.\

It tells you how much damage your Ultra is going to deal. When the gauge passes the first line, you can initiate the Ultra. When it is full, you will deal maximum damage with it. At least, that's how it is on the PC.
  • Natas_Enasni #47 2 years ago

Dudley, Ibuki, Cody, AND Makoto? I'd pay double full price for thems I don't give a crap! Is anybody surprised Capcom releasing another SFIV like this? Really now? Them doing it for every single Street in the series didn't tip you off?
  • Mayhem64 #48 2 years ago

It'll be in the arcades first, just like the original... it will probably be at least a good few months until it comes anywhere near the home market I bet.
  • mrmonkey1980 #49 2 years ago

We're not going to go through this again are we? Super Street fighter 4? Super street fighter 4 Turbo Edition. Super Street Fighter 4 Mega Turbo Nuclear exploding pants, washes your dishes and makes you a cup of tea, shiny gold expletive editon with jiggling boobs?

DLC should put an end to this
  • Velios #50 2 years ago

Sorry but DLC is pants in 90% of cases. I want a FULL and new Street Fighter experience and DLC will not give me that... or if it does then it will be at a similar price to a boxed game anyway... and then you never actually OWN. DLC is a bit of a big con really and consumer unfriendly...
  • RobotRocker #51 2 years ago

    This can swing either way

    - DLC Only. The hardcore rage against the machine and start screaming how Capcom is fucking them over. They may have point as Tournaments would have to have consoles with the upgrade and even though this gen is going last a very long time for the PS3/360. What happens when you move onto a new console? Will MS/Sony have backwards compatibility for Hard Drive for the NeXt-Box/PS4? And what about people jumping on board SF4 now. It alienates them

    - Disc Only basicly says that Capcom have gone to their bad habits again of charging up the ass for upgrades every year and every Super Street Fighter 2 Ultra edition plus Alpha Versus The Beano joke becomes relevant and annoying again which would be a really bad connotation for Capcom as its merciless flogging of the Franchise at the end of the 90's nearly killed the genre. It also annoys the casual players like hell. Say what you want but Flowchart Ken is a player with more purchasing power but will easily put down the points/money for Gears/CoD maps and will more than likely put down the money for an online expansion as an impulse purchase.

Then you also have to consider the effect on Japanese arcades since they were already dated badly with the console release having exclusive characters. On the other hand. Microsoft and Sony are dead set on proving the worth of XBL/PSN and would undoubtedly lean on Capcom to make use of the service considering most of this generations biggest titles (GTA4, LBP, Gears 2, Fallout 3, Rock Band) have used the online stores to great effect. Having an expansion up there stands to make a lot more money for Capcom, MS and Sony since they skip retail entirely

Capcom have been very smart this gen though. What I can see is a DLC release at around 1600-2400 Allards/£15-25 but supplemented with Super SF4 GOTY edition being released in the stores soon after at full price with a few extras like a new art book and a soundtrack CD for those double dipping. All this coming 2 months after an arcade exclusive period in Japan for people to get hype.

But then I have heard arguments for charging £40 for it by people saying they paid £75 for Super SF2 on the SNES and were happy with it. Mind Boggling. But then hardcore fighter fans buy Guilty Gear Upgrades which are "Guilty Gear X: Now with new hat!" so you are really speaking to people with more money than sense

so you sell crap DLC, like extra costumes, which were probably ready from day 1, but instead of putting them on the disk you sold them to us, and now instead of selling us the only proper dlc, you turn it into a game?
  • dopeonthetable #54 2 years ago

There is a video interview with Yoshinori Ono on the front page of EventHubs.

"Here's a summary of what Ono had to say.

-Super Street Fighter 4 is tentatively set for a spring 2010 release.
-The update will be released on a disc, and won't be available as DLC (Downloadable Content) — but the game will be priced as an upgrade — not a brand new title.
-As this time, they're thinking of adding about 8 characters to the game. (Rumors currently have this pegged at 10 fighters total).
-Capcom is planning on adding more features to the online modes. Things so people can enjoy playing as a group. (Sounds like lobbies are in).
-There will be tweaks and balance changes, along with more online stuff and new features the developers are adding in.
Bonus Stages aren't 100% confirmed, but it sounds very likely they'll be making it into Super Street Fighter 4.
-You won't need the original disc to play this update, but fans who have a copy of SF4 will be, "happy to have held on to it," as they'll be receiving something nifty.
-Juri is a Korean Tae Kwan Do fighter and is very important to the storyline.
-They skipped "Champion Edition" and "Turbo" and jumped straight to "Super" for the name of this upgrade because of the scale and size of what they're planning. "

Can the Street Fighter name extension jokes please stop? it was funny in 1998, not now.
  • Br0ken_Engli5h #56 2 years ago

    @RobotRocker

You're hardly talking about people with more money than sense.
I've poured 260 hours into SFIV since release, I've still got a lot to learn and I still haven't done with it yet. Now that's a better buy than Fallout or any FF game as far as lastability is concerned.
Any new updates to the system or a boost to the roster (with you having to learn new match-ups, aside from the characters themselves) has a lot of hours of potential play in it, far more than the likes of say Batman:AA, which had little beyond the SP campaign.
  • geeza2020 #57 2 years ago

im excited at the thought of more street fighter, but then im still rubbish at regular sf4, so i think theres not much reason for me to pay out for this.
