Super Robot Wars tops Japanese chart

Metal Gear Solid 4 knocked down to 2.

PSP title Super Robot Wars A Portable has knocked Metal Gear Solid 4 off the top of the Japanese software chart.

According to Media Create data, MGS4 is the only PS3 game in this week's top ten. There are no Xbox 360 titles listed, and still no evidence to suggest anyone in Japan even knows what an Xbox 360 is.

MGS4 is followed by Super Mario Stadium Family Baseball for Wii in third, while in fourth place is PS2 title Harulanaru Toki no Naka de 4. No idea.

Mario Kart Wii is doing an amusing pun about racing ahead or pole position or tires or something at five, and Wii Fit's at six.

Here's that Japanese all-formats software chart in full.

  • 1. Super Robot Wars A Portable (PSP)
  • 2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (PS3)
  • 3. Super Mario Stadium Family Baseball (WII)
  • 4. Harulanaru Toki no Naka de 4 (PS2)
  • 5. Mario Kart Wii (WII)
  • 6. Wii Fit (WII)
  • 7. Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (PSP)
  • 8. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 3 (PSP)
  • 9. Beautiful Letter Training (NDS)
  • 10. Let's Make a Pro Baseball Team! (NDS)

    Oh dear.....

/ waits for the MGS fanboys screaming "this chart is an insult to gamers everywhere and obviously PSP biased, I'm never looking at a chart again!!!!"
  • CannonAnBall #2 4 years ago

First post, first jokey MGS4 comment.

The future of this thread looks good!

    EDIT: That better? lol

    "First post, first wanker."

A bit harsh I feel, merely a joke reference to the MGS4 thread fun! With that kind of venom you are obviously a MGS fanboy yourself!
  • miiiguel #4 4 years ago

You can't make jokes of sacred cows, bad. It's disrespectful.
  • CannonAnBall #5 4 years ago

...and to be honest MGS4 is soo last week.

I've had the pleasure of seeing this weeks news on other sites....which is the better version of Battlefield?

Now that is creating some serious arguments and it won't be long till Eurogamer jumps on board!
  • bad09 #6 4 years ago

so true miiiguel, I hear in some countries they kill you for joking at MGS.......

    @ CannonAnBall

Ah thanks much better now I just need a hug! :)

Obviously the japanese wanted something to play on their PSP whilst the cutscenes were going on... ;-)
  • gingerlink #8 4 years ago

it has the words super AND robot in the title, of course it's going to do well in Japan.
  • des #9 4 years ago

    I am surprised.....Not really
  • MrXBob #10 4 years ago

Don't mind me, I'm just here to fan the flames...

Where are the fanboys that, not 2 weeks ago, were declaring that the 360 would be knocked off the face of the Earth come MGS4's release?

I'm actually very surprised it didnt last more than a week at number 1 - especially in Japan. That really does show how little interest people have in the PS3.

Can't wait for the inevitable 360 port next year to re-coup their ludicrous development costs. I'd love to hear the fanboys reasons about how it fits on one DVD9. Funny what you can do when you compress your audio and dont have to duplicate the data 40 times to have it read at a decent speed...

    Bluray ftw indeed.

"Ah, so to crack the Japanese market, the next MS console needs to be called 'Super Robot Xbox'. Oh, and not be an American product... ;) "
Close - It'll need to be "Super Mega Robot Dance Dance Xbox: Eternal Gundam of the Forbidden Princess - Alpha Remix XXII Portable Redux"
Then you're on to a guaranteed winner.
    Or stick Mario on it.
  • MrXBob #12 4 years ago

I literally laughed out loud to that - it even rolls off the tongue!

Awesome job :D And stupidly true, too

A bad week for MGS but a great week for the Playstation brand with six of the top ten PS games. And across all three formats!

PSP has been a monster in Japan so far this year although my understanding is that there are no more big releases for it for a while now so sales may dip in the weeks to come. But still, those people who knock the PSP and claim it's a failure compared to the DS clearly don't know what they're talking about. With worldwide sales of over 35 million so far and with it consistently outselling the X360 and sometimes even the DS, it's a format with a long life ahead of it. Roll on PSP2.
  • MrXBob #14 4 years ago

It's definitely a failure compared to DS - but it's definitely not an overall 'failure'.

I still only use mine for homebrew though, the only games I own for it are both GTA Stories.
  • CannonAnBall #15 4 years ago

Indeed Mr Xbob, I think after what you said i'll sell my PS3 and re-buy a 360. I was so so wrong. There is only one winner and thats the 360 this gen.

If rumours of a PSP phone next year come true that could be very interesting, although I still have a nagging feeling that Sony needs to concentrate more on the PSP being a games machine than a jack of all trades. It is an awesome piece of technology and games like GTA and God of War really show it off. And the compatibility between it and the PS3 is great, too.
  • MrXBob #17 4 years ago

"Sony needs to concentrate more on the PSP being a games machine than a jack of all trades"

Definitely. A large reason as to why the PS3 isn't doing as well as it should be is because of this. It's fine having extra features, but if you dont concentrate on the games, then gamers are going to get annoyed.
  • Gastrian #18 4 years ago

Shame we won't see the Super Robot series outside of Japan, which is a shame seeing as Super Robot Taisen: Original Generation 1 & 2 are fantastic games, either game easily fits into the top 5 TRPG slots.
  • penguin_overlord #19 4 years ago

@MrXBob - "Where are the fanboys that, not 2 weeks ago, were declaring that the 360 would be knocked off the face of the Earth come MGS4's release? The problem with the real fanboys is that they are all feeling and no fact. MGS4 was never going to put the nail in the coffin of the 360 but there's no doubt that it has helped narrow the game between the PS3 and 360 in terms of sales. Even if MGS4 is converted to 360 next year (unlikely because it's not powerful enough) 360 sales will not benefit from it. The truth is that the X360's recent sales have been troubling for Microsoft as it's struggled to outsell the PS3 in any region. GTA4 was a failure for them in terms of what they paid for the DLC as the promise of it seemed to do little for sales. Yes, the 360 version did sell better but that's only because there are more 360's. In fact, PS3 sales increased as a percentage just as much as the 360's and the percentage of PS3 owners who bought GTA4 was higher than on 360.

The 360's sales will continue to get knocked by the PS3 this year and next year the PS3 will completely demolish it with exclusives like Killzone 2, FFXIII, GT5 and God of War. Plus, Resident Evil will generate more sales of the PS3 than of the 360.

Lastly, it's a bit much you suggesting there's little interest in the PS3 when not only are sales of the 360 practically non-existent in Japan, but the PS3 has outsold it worldwide so far this year.
  • Quint2020 #20 4 years ago

Lol, i'd love to know how much it cost to make that compared to MGS4.

Japanese gamers just aren't interested in "hardcore" games anymore.
  • Sevens #21 4 years ago

The PSP is doing well over there.
  • des #22 4 years ago

PS3 is dead in Japan, you can start grieving now...
  • Sevens #23 4 years ago

"The PSP deserves to do well, its a superb bit of kit with some amazing games. It's just a shame that most people would rather buy games that tell you how thick you are or how to cook something."

Yeah, it is a console primarily for core gamers. Unfortunately while there are truly great game (Daxter, Portable Ops, Crisis Core, Valkyrie Profile...) there isn't a great number yet. IGN has interviewed Mr. Koller (Sony) about the PSP just recently, interesting insights. There's not a single blockbuster I care about announced at this point. The sales numbers of the PSP should change that. Hopefully. Oh and release the Star Ocean remakes in English, please.

    P.S.:

"PS3 is dead in Japan, you can start grieving now... "

Perhaps when I'm done grieving about the nonsense you post. Thanks for the 'info', though.

Deagle, it's obvious. Sales of the PS3 and X360 as a result of RE5 will be fairly neck and neck in Europe and the US but in Japan you can expect major PS3 sales. The 360, by comparison, won't gain any sales at all in Japan as a result of the game.
  • MrXBob #25 4 years ago

    penguin_overlord:

I stopped reading when you said the 360 isnt powerful enough.

There is simply nothing that MGS4 does that other games don't already do. MGS4 is nothing special at all when it comes to the technology it uses - either you've been listening to too much Sony hyperbole, or you're not quite sure what you're talking about.

The 360 is more than powerful enough to run MGS4.
  • MrXBob #26 4 years ago

So explain your way around the fact that the 360 sold more copies of GTA IV than PS3..
  • penguin_overlord #27 4 years ago

Because there are more 360's than PS3's and GTA isn't a big seller in Japan compared to other games. But with Resident Evil things will be different. By the time it's released, I expect the 360 to have less than a 3 million sales lead over the PS3 and some of those sales will come from people switching from 360 to PS3. It's starting to happen already. Please tell me you're not one of these people who doesn't think the PS3 will outsell the 360.
  • johnnybrn #28 4 years ago

    @ penguin_overlord,

Dont put to much faith on Killzone 2 being a killer app or you will get laughed off these boards.

Oh, and God of War is out in 2010.
  • penguin_overlord #29 4 years ago

Look, MGS4 can't run on the 360 in its current form. It has no hard drive as standard and no Blu-Ray. Even if the 360 has enough processing power (whih I have doubts about) it's crippled for storage. If you've played the game you'll know what I mean.
  • mingster #30 4 years ago

There's no point comparing japanese sales...
They like anything with baseball and robots in it. Thats portable.
Super Robot Baseball Cooking Taisen Bubblewrap popper for the Gameboy would be No.1 for months.
(BTW the no.1 selling item in Japan atm is a bubblewrap popping simulator!)
  • MrXBob #31 4 years ago

    penguin_overlord:

As has already been said, you're just sounding like a fanboy now. And whats with all the 'I'm Michael Pachter' predictions?

For better or worse, the 360 is this generations PS2. It has a larger 'civilian' prescence over the PS3, just as the PS2 did over the original Xbox.

What I mean by that is, for example: something like MTV Cribs. It always used to be 'come see my entertainment room' which ALWAYS had a PS2 in it, and 'Playstation' always got named. This time around, it's the 360 being namechecked by more and more celebrities.

And that's simply the way things work. Whichever is in the spotlight more is going to sell more. And that's a fact. It's more popular, has a larger following from the average joe, and, along with the DS and Wii, it's the name most parents now recognise more and more than the 'expensive Playstation'.

I'm not saying I agree with how this all works - I hate programs like MTV Cribs, but it's the perfect example of how everything works. Personally I have a 360 because it's my personal choice. But sales don't come from hardcore gamers, they come from the general public.
  • MrXBob #32 4 years ago

You're simply wrong. Wrong wrong and wrong again.

The only reason (literally the only reason) MGS4 requires a hard drive on the PS3 is because the blu-ray drive is not fast enough to load the data. When you understand this you will see what I mean.

Put the data on a DVD which loads properly, and theres no need to stream data. And incase you've forgotten, the PS3 version of GTA IV does this - yet the 360 version doesnt. Developers have it as an option, and thats that.

The processing power of the 360 is on par with the PS3. Yet again you seem to be confusing Sony hyperbole with fact. Are you also still expecting 4D graphics from your supermachine? All games on 360 can run on PS3, just as all games on PS3 can run on 360.

And I love how you say all this as though the PS3 is the superior machine, when the very game you're talking about REQUIRES a 4gb install at the start, takes 23 minutes to get to gameplay from pressing start (because of cutscenes, caching and loading) AND requires installations of every chapter every time you get to them - even if you've played them before.

And do you know why? Because the PS3 just isnt built like a games console. Developers have to force their games into these silly methods to work on the PS3. It's that simple.

    This is truely living.

PSP in not one trick pony shock... this thing has legs, but not pony legs.
  • Nikanoru #34 4 years ago

Hey, let's stop arguing about the fact that the PS3 is nothing special, and direct our attention towards how much the Japanese seem to love baseball this week. Seriously, look at it. There's a baseball game in the top 10 for every major platform.
  • thats_all_folks #35 4 years ago

meh fanboy or not, its still wonderful game, I've never played anything like it!

I love all this fanboy-antifanboyism, its not about fact its about winding up each other up, it makes a great spectator sport! :)
  • CannonAnBall #36 4 years ago

probably the truest post I've read on this site.

If I want a laugh I come on here for a read.

MrXBob? - fancy seeing you here!......having trouble posting onto a certain other site are we?, me too - for a moment I thought I'd been banned for something.

    :-)
  • MrXBob #38 4 years ago

Aha! I thought it was just the Fable topic they'd put in the wrong section... very odd!

Small world, though ;) Uh.. small web!
  • ParmaViolet #39 4 years ago

    Isn't it just?

On a slightly down-note - my 360 RROD'ed on me last night. Totally out of the blue, booted it up for a GH3 session and was greeted by red lights. Worst thing about it is that I may not get a 360 fix until the end of next month - HMV don't have any Elites in stock and I'm away to the US in about 2 weeks.....GH: Aerosmith is out tomorrow too - woe is me.

    :-(
  • MrXBob #40 4 years ago

Thats what you get for buying a 360! Didnt you get the personal letter from Bill Gates when you bought it saying he'd made a deal with the devil to destroy your Xbox? ;)
  • ParmaViolet #41 4 years ago

Aye, 'tis inevitable - I guess....

Ah well, you never know - they might just get their new Elites in tomorrow. If so, one already has my name on it.....if only I'd opted for a Premium, I'd have had a replacement by now - but, Oh No, I had to go for the fancy black one with the big hard-drive that doesn't seem to be in stock as often.....that'll teach me

    :-)
  • dahsif #42 4 years ago

That can only mean ONE thing:

    Wait for it

    Wait some more

    MGS 4 on 360 CONFIRMED!

Wait, there are no 360's in Japan.
