Sony repeats it has "no plans" for PSP2

Sources still say otherwise.

Sony has reiterated that "no plans for a PSP2 are underway" in an interview with Silicon Valley Insider.

The website reports that hardware marketing director John Koller described the PSP2 rumour as "completely unfounded", although it reported the words rather than attributing them to Koller, preferring to go with the blanket Sony "no plans" for a comment.

Koller apparently said our report that Sony intends to introduce a PSP-4000 in 2009 and a PSP2 at a later date is a misinterpretation of the platform holder's push to move away from UMD towards digital distribution.

However, he did not rule out a PSP-4000 in 2009, and our sources are adamant that Sony has specifically discussed both products with them, and that games are in development for a PSP successor, as we reported on Tuesday.

When that machine will be released is unknown, but it stands to reason that Sony would distance itself from any talk of a PSP2 while the current PSP is on the market in the Christmas period.

They'll probably do a Nintendo where they'll deny it once more after Christmas, before announcing the PSP2 one day later.

So certainly no more UMD it seems. Can only hope it makes the thing harder to pirate, the trade off for that is that there are no sneaky bargains to be had like picking up a game for a couple of quid.

Can never take a Sony denial that seriously anymore.
  • drumbaby #4 3 years ago

Damn Sony and their lies. That pesky lying corporation!
  • dominalien #5 3 years ago

They would be short-sighted NOT to begin work on the next generation console as soon as or soon after the previous one is out. For one, what would all the dev teams do?

Also, denials from companies about new products are generally not to be taken too seriously. No-one wants to cannibalise the sales of current hardware, after all.

'Oh and btw. grow up. '

No, if they want grown up reactions, they shouldn't behave so childish. Everybody knows that it in development or that they are at least thinking about it. A simple 'no comment' or 'we have nothing to talk about at this moment' would do. Saying 'We have no plans' is just insulting the deduction capacity of gamers.

Saying it has "no plans" for a successor to PSP is akin to it saying it has "no plans" to make any more games. But no-one's surprised are they? These guys are just doing what they're told.

Neither is SuperWii nor Xbox 720 or PS4 in development.

No new consoles or handhelds will ever be released.

    Believe it if you want...
  • Shakey_Jake33 #9 3 years ago

Well, obvious PR 'control' aside, it's likely that they have new hardware in R&D, which may or may not become the PSP2. They don't really have much need to rush things unless the DSi severely eats into the PSP's market share in Japan.

I'm glad they're moving away from clunky mechanical mediums such as UMD though, they were never suited for use in a handheld.

Translation:"Sony want to ensure sales of PSP 1 until PSP 2 is ready for unveiling."

True. But PR should stop treating consumers like ignorant fucks. Ms just says "We do not comment on rumours or speculation" (or something along those lines) which is imo the best way to handle it. It's like nintendo saying that they will not make a dslite a day before they announce it.

I was soooo dissapointed by PSP, and I won't be fooled by Sony again.

Who's ready for the ZunePhone or the XboxHandheld then ?
  • Kusobi #13 3 years ago

@Xerx3s: I think you are overestimating the deduction capacity of gamers. Also, consumers ARE ignorant fucks. In some languages the word consumer is an insult.
  • Ryze #14 3 years ago

    @bdaggers

I'd get an xboy - I'd like at least some of my XBLA games to work on it though! But I'm demanding like that.

Regardless of your desire to insult people gamers aren't stupid enough to believe that a company like Sony has no plans to develop a sequel to their current hand-held. These devices take years to develop, they more than likely have had one in development for some time now. Simply saying "no comment" would be enough. This smells like bull.

I think people are interpreting this in a more-extreme way than intended. While there surely is some form of PSP2 in development, statements such as this are purely intended to reassure potential customers that their purchase will continue to be their primary handheld formats for the forseeable future. I think deducting that there was an intent to take gamers for fools is reading too much into this.

    Damn digital distribution.

Fans of the RROD and scratched things probably.

I think the PSP2, which will probably be announced after christmas, will actually break through the boundaries that Sony brushed up against with the PSP and actually snap off your fingers while kicking you in the balls. All for a measly kajillion pounds.
  • MaxiSleep #19 3 years ago

"We do not discuss future products."

    Truth

    "No plans for PSP2"

    Lie

So why are sony acting like a bunch of noobs?

  • kungfool #20 3 years ago

Death to UMD! PSP2 has gotta be Flash-based, right?
  • rascoj64 #21 3 years ago

Who cares about the PSP anyway, the current model is rubbish, I've got zero interest in another one. They should just throw in the towel and admit defeat!
  • rascoj64 #22 3 years ago

  • jonsaan #23 3 years ago

they don't need a psp2. PSP is fantastic. It just needs a new approach which they seem to be doing quite well lately with PSN integration. Just drop the prices to SSdust levels and we'll be all set!
  • StooMonster #24 3 years ago

Sony don't need PSP2, they need some software for PSP1.

I've owned one of the things since US launch day, and can only say that the list of quality titles is less than the fingers of one hand.
