Reeves to speak at GamesCon Germany

Former SCEE boss looking for freedom.

Games Convention Online has announced David Reeves as one of the speakers of the summer event, which takes place in Leipzig on 31st July and 1st August.

It used to be Europe's premier game-show, but has changed tack after being upstaged by GamesCom: the Cologne-based event that runs from 19th - 23rd August.

Similarly, David Reeves used to be a premier figure within the videogame industry as boss of Sony Europe, until he left in April after 15 years with the company. But he will use his experience to enlighten others.

"At the GCO, I will provide a view of when online sales of games overtake classic retail distribution," said Reeves. His speech is titled 'Schrodinger's Cat and Heisenberg's Dog: The Change from Offline to Online'.

Reeves said a lot of other things during his time with Sony; quotes that we cobbled together as a fond farewell.

He's not done yet.

    I had hoped we would no longer have to suffer this twit.

    @lambtron,

    I dunno. I quite liked Reeves, but it was clear that he was somewhat hamstrung in what he could and couldn't say by his SCEJ paymasters. On top of that, the need to put a positive spin on a situation that was, for SCEE, less than positive meant that much of what he said was subject to a particularly high level of scrutiny.

    I just hope that he will now choose to speak with a little more freedom and honesty than we are used to. Given the nature of the topic he is due to speak on, it would be refreshing to see him highlight the sucessful path that Microsoft (with XBLA) and Valve (with Steam) have forged in the industry over the last few years and not hide from the fact that companies such as Sony, EA, et all are still very much in the position of "me too" and really need to up their game.

    Fair enough rotmm - hope you're right and I'm wrong ;).

    Sadly I suspect that you're going to be proven right here.

    However, the previous post was written with my "Glass half full" mentality today ;)

    The headline got me all excited that it would be Vic Reeves. I am now disappointed.

    :(

    David Reeves would have been awesome on Shooting Stars.

    @kinky_mong

    Funnily enough, I read that as Christopher Reeves. Now there's a thought.

    Looking for freedom. Nice one. That's got to be a shoe-in for The Best Knowing Reference in a Subhead Award.

    Let's hope he uses his newfound freedom to dish out at least some of the good gossip :)

    Seriously, who here is truly free? Chasing after that is a lost cause in today's world, and real freedom is only to be found in recognising and choosing your constraints.
