R-Type Tactics sequel announced News

PSP News by Oli Welsh

30 July, 2009

1up reports that Irem is to make a sequel to R-Type Tactics (R-Type Command in the Americas), last year's turn-based PSP curio.

R-Type Tactics II: Operation Bitter Chocolate - yes, really - will be released for PSP in Japan on October 29th. There are no known plans for a US or European release yet. Rising Star Games brought the first game to Europe.

Following the original's controversial departure from side-scrolling shooting to turn-based strategy, Operation Bitter Chocolate makes another change: rather than portraying humanity's struggle against the Bydo aliens, as all previous R-Type games have done, it will depict a war between two human factions.

Gameplay will be more or less the same, only with more units and abilities. That's not altogether a bad thing, going by our review of the first R-Type Tactics.

"Operation Bitter Chocolate" - when I read that on the front page I thought it was one of the usual EG jokey taglines. Operation Bitter Chocolate is just a ridiculous title.

I played quite a lot of the first R-Type Tactics (about 40-odd missions before I'd had enough) so I hope they do an English language release. Not convinced by the human v human setting though.

Can anyone come up with a more ridiculous name for a game? The only one I can think of that irritates me as much as this one is Armored Core "For Answer". I wish they would check these things first.

Why bother with a squel? The first game was rubbish - why not do a remake of r-type Neo with flashy graphics?

Why don't Irem just admit that ending the series with R-Type Final was a mistake and that the rise of handhelds and digital downloads mean that shoot em ups, especially horizontal ones are ideally suited to the PSP and then announce a new one.

It'll help finance new games and bring in much needed capital to Irem, it would be a bloody good fun and more than welcome from R-Type fans.

I'd like to see a fast-paced bullet hell R-Type ala Gradius V. Like G-Type, but bigger, better and more badass (TM).

This is the best name I've ever heard for a game. It says R-Type! It says Bourneville! Where do I preorder?
