PlayStation Move unveiled

The PS3 motion controller. Wand, sub-controller, pricing, games, photos and screenshots.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 3 motion controller is officially to be called PlayStation Move.

Exact pricing and bundling information will follow soon, but in the meantime we've been told that the Move controller, PlayStation Eye camera and a starter disc with game demos will be bundled for under $100 this autumn.

Other deals will include a standalone controller for people who already have PS Eye; a full console pack, which includes PS3, DualShock 3, Move and PS Eye; and a range of game-and-controller bundles.

Check out our PlayStation Move photo gallery to see what it looks like these days.

The main controller features a three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor. It weighs 145g and is 200mm x 46mm.

It has a colour-changing sphere, which is tracked by the PlayStation Eye camera, supports rumble, and has action buttons and an analogue trigger.

Sony will also release a smaller PlayStation Move "sub-controller", which is a one-handed device with a "sleek curved design that pairs with the motion controller", and which has its own analogue stick and directional buttons.

PlayStation Move.

The sub-controller weighs a mere 95g and is 138mm x 42mm. (You can tell we scrolled the whole way down the press release on this one.) It will be possible to play through the whole of SOCOM 4 using a Move-and-sub-controller combination.

Like the Sixaxis and DualShock 3, the controllers have built-in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and sync with PS3 via Bluetooth.

Sony said it will back the launch with "more than 20" games that either use or support Move by the end of its fiscal year on 31st March 2011.

Several of the games were shown off on-stage during Sony's GDC conference keynote. Check out the live text transcript of the conference to learn more about them.

Sony's GDC press kit includes screenshots of a number of games with Move support. Check them out:

Sony also revealed that 36 developers and publishers are supporting Move, although its list does include Tecmo and Koei separately.

It also has Sony Online Entertainment on it, which is surely a given. "Hi Kaz, it's Kaz, will you support Move?" "Hi Kaz! I'd love to! Sincerely, Kaz."

Can't they see that all they're doing is fragmenting the market, thus confusing the mass-consumer?

I'll take it if it's free. Other than that, no thanks.
  • Lusterpurge #11 2 years ago

Oh wow. I'm not sure what to think about this.

    They look... very weird.
  • Keysosaurus #12 2 years ago

Why have a sub-controller, that you have to buy separately, when they could've just stuck the analogue stick on the main move controller instead of that "move" button, and used two of them for socom etc. Also very close to the wii for my liking, but at least it's more accurate with less lag i suppose!
  • mandella #13 2 years ago

If I wanted Wii I would have bought one. Gives us some serious games using this equipment - like you know, Star Wars game would be perfect - or "who gives a fuck?"
  • pauljeremiah #14 2 years ago

been honest I thought the whole presentation was meh and geared towards the casual audience, but I did like LBP with it and Socom 4 looked playable. Anyone else noticed that the camera wasn't been moved by the cursor?
  • Eraysor #15 2 years ago

And so the waggle-fest begins...I think the trouble is most Wii owners have now forgotten they even bought a Wii in the first place (myself included) and have already got over the added "fun" of waggle games.

It's going to take something seriously impressive to convert me, considering I bought a Wii on launch day and I've only ever bothered to complete one game for it.
  • red_shift #16 2 years ago

    WOW.

I can't wait to buy this crap, I can keep it the same cupboard as my Singstar mics, my Buzz buzzers and my Rockband guitar and drums.

I agree that beyond party games, core games are going to be the real test for this stuff on PS3 (and 360 with Natal). Its here that distance between Wii and those will be cut.

SOCOM is a good start for PS3, but I'm disappointed their wasn't more than that.
  • NotSoSlim #19 2 years ago

Isnt GDC aimed at developers and not the gamers? Isnt the gamer show E3?

Also how do you fragment the market if you offer both ways of playing on one disk? Isnt options a good thing? Roll on Tiger Woods 2011 with the move
  • riz23 #20 2 years ago

Haha that super wiimote looks FUCKING RIDICULOUS!
  • feistycheese #21 2 years ago

I know theres a lot of cynicism about this, and rightly so, but the pricing seems quite reasonable, and for people who play a lot of sports games like me (Tiger Woods, Fight Night, Top Spin etc), this could be great. Plus, like someone has mentioned, on some of the cheesy games, my girlfriend might actually have a go.

Theres always going to be people saying 'it doesnt do this/its just like the Wii', but I think Sony are doing the right thing by developing this, and I will definetely be having a go (especially considering the amount of devs on board).

edit - I also think this would absolutely suit a game like Oblivion, would love to run around bashing creatures in the face with my 'move' stick, though knowing my sodding luck i'd put it through my big expensive HD telly.

  • lavalant #27 2 years ago

I wish they had put 2 of those balls at the end of the wand, just to further enhance it's ridiculous look, no seriously good luck to them and lets never speak of this bullshit again, now about The Last Guardian?
  • AnsemsApprentice #28 2 years ago

I play games to get away from reality, not act like a tit in front of my Viera... Saying all of that, I would love to play a port of No More Heroes the way it was meant to be played, without having to buy a whole new system. The Wii has some great games I would like to play like, Mad world and Murumasa. I feel like I'm missing out so this could be quite good in the long run, IF some good games come out with proper use of this peripheral.

@hy4000uk : quote "the most obvious knockoff i've ever seen "

I think you're confusing this with Natal?

Besides, im all for it.. Wii like pointing controls, but with more accuracy, and high def visuals, etc? Bring it on!

From what i saw from Videos at E3 last year, could be great for fps games! In fact I can see LOADS more "real world game" uses for this than i can see for they "eye toy 2" (natal)

As for saying it's a Wii knock off.. look on youtube - sony were demoing this tech long before nintendo showed the wii.

    Hmmm,pretty much what was expected.

    Nunchuk/Subcontroller
    Casual games
    Marketing in the Wii/Natal vein
    Live demo

Thing seems to work pretty well, thats for sure, although it has some little lag but its still early days of development.

But for me the interesting thing was

    1)All third parties on board
2)Shipping games with dual SKUS(DS3/Move ) in one Blu Ray,so everybody can play their way (Move/DS3) so the core/casual division in many games will dissappear. This will prevent fragmenting the market as the WMP has done.
    3)Move response is one frame....similar to DS3.
4)Very easy to develop for ,so a lot of option of many ,many games taking the 2 route.
5)The subcontroller is optional ,so probably the DS3 option to move the character is still allowed.
  • davisorle #35 2 years ago

Was just watching the video of Move with the fighting game at GT.... I cant wait for DF to tell us how far off from the truth is the 1:1 lagless responce in game .. :S
  • smelly #36 2 years ago

@davisorle : Lagless in comparision to natal?
  • seanthejackal #37 2 years ago

more accurate than wii 100 times better graphics than wii its more of an evolution than a rip off.
  • smelly #38 2 years ago

@seanthejackal : Agree.. And as I said, sony demoed this tech first.

Be interesting if you get the same number as negs as i go though :-D

Honestly - some people seem to have missed the point of the neg button - it's there to mark down and hide trolls and spammers. Not people who are disagreeing with you.. Otherwise it'll just become "mob rule" where (say for example) a load of 360 owners come into a thread like this and mark up people slagging this off, and mark down people (like me) pointing out that it actually looks quite good!

  • man.the.king #43 2 years ago

I hope this doesn't start an avalanche of casual waggle games a la Wii. I would be more interested in the "Move" if the core games on the Sony platform - e.g. FPS, TPS, RPG, Action, Adventure, Platformers, etc - supported this.

The list of third-party developers said to be supporting this gives me hope, though.

I really want to like it I totally get the whole motion sensing thing. the missus has a Wii (Wii fit etc) and it can be quite fun. The recent release of silent hill on the Wii does show that a decent developer with good ideas can make this thing work beyond the usual post beers arm waving but........

Im just not feeling the love at the moment. Is it me or have Sony gone on some horrendous detour of late PSP Go, PS3 slim design, appocalyPS3, Move etc?

  • BOFH_UK #59 2 years ago

Hmm, I see a slight problem with this. Even if they bring the starter pack (I assume a wand, sub controller and camera plus game) for less than $100 the PS3 is STILL by far and away the most expensive of the three consoles. Why is the casual gamer, surely the target audience for this system, going to drop £250 on a console plus another £50 - £70 on the controller (let's be generous and say they bundle a 120Gb PS3 with the Move for £300) when they can buy a Wii for £150? The Wii has a well established library of titles targeted at that market where the PS3 is kinda starting from nothing. I know the PS3 offers a lot that the Wii doesn't (Blu-Ray, good on-line service, different back catalogue etc) but I'm not entirely sure that matters to the casual gamer. No matter how I look at it the maths just doesn't seem to work out.

To be honest, I'm slightly surprised by just how much this is a Wiimote knock-off. "Sub-controller"? Please. Still, matching Nintendo's capabilities exactly will at least open them up to wii ports to help establish a catalogue quickly.

Plus, there are two extra motion capture methods above what Nintendo do. Magnetometers are being used increasingly in mobile phones for augmented reality stuff so you can tell absolute orientation.

Many of us wanted to like the wii. Heck millions of us bought the wii but now it's neglected. Why? we obviously liked the premiss of motion control but the games that were released were mainly mini games and shovelware. If Sony can stop this from happening (i pray theres not to many of those TV game and move family or whatever its called released) and focus and 'proper' games then it could work. As mentioned tennis and gold benefit from motion control so hopefully this will pan out for sony.If they do it over here for a game, camera and move for less that £80 i'll be happy.
  • rockin_rob_1 #68 2 years ago

oww, i didnt buy my £300 wiiStation 3.. i mean Playstation 3 to play wii games, i bought my wii for that. It's going to take a lot of convincing to get people to buy Move at that price when they already have a wii. I don't think people playing party games are after HD. More proper games for this please Sony! If Capcom did Okami 2 for this, that'd be awesome.

If there's a Star Wars lightsaber game released (and this goes for the Wii too) then I'll buy it. In fact, no, that doesn't go for the Wii too, as the Wii-mote wouldn't have the range or responsiveness for such a game.

From the range of frankly gimmicky games available on the Wii, I don't think there is much need for this Sony clone of the Wii-mote unless it does things drastically differently.

I mean the games released for these controllers never seem to realise the potential of the controller and play to the controller's strengths. Why isn't there a lightsaber game, or even a decent, sword fighting game? People would buy it in droves.
  • Bravestinsane #75 2 years ago

Think i will skip buying a PS3 now, really considered it too, but if this is the next big thing fuck that it would be embarrassing inviting friends around to play with those things.

I imangine that the secondary controler probaly syncs to the Move controller and it connects to the PS3 or at least that would be the better solution.

Then again at nearly £70 - £100 a pop for them I don't think many PS3 owners are going to have more than 2 never mind seven.
  • metalnut #82 2 years ago

for the record, i down-voted you because i think your off-base about this being any less wii-derivative than the natal, and the importance of sony demoing this tech pre-wii. companies demo a lot of things, but the wii proved that the concept works, and now they are all playing catch-up :)

@Gecks : "for the record, i down-voted you because i think your off-base about this being any less wii-derivative than the natal,"

Oh sorry if you misunderstood me. I'll re-iterate - I said that sony did this as a tech demo BEFORE the wii was announced. Natal on the otherhand is just a eyetoy rip off.

But it seems in this thread anything "pro sony" get negated by the fanboys... Seems that not many of you are ps3 owners.

"@smelly: how is it more accurate? are you retarded? "

From the demos shown at last years E3 - where he signed his name using the thing.. yes it does look more accurate.. certainly more accurate than flapping your arms around in front of the tv and waiting for the lag to catch up.

Shits Smelly that's great news for all the developers making games about writing your fucking name on the screen

    useless for everyone else

Good maybe ill finally get to play silent hill shattered memories. To be honest I wouldn't care if it was exactly the same as the wii because as anyone who sat down for a single player non drunk gaming session knows that on a 40 inch TV wii games hurt your eyes. The only other time Ive had it worse was GTA 4 which gave me headaches if I played for extended periods.

Also this will be free from the shitty sensor bar.

Why does a bike look like a bike? Wheels are so HIDEOUS, I mean. Why did their EVER put wheels on bikes anyway?

The bulb is there cause it's the fucking reason the whole device exists.

Instead of having a sub controller they should have just put an analogue stick on this one, then on normal games substitute the shape buttons with the D pad. Maybe that would have confused the casual gamer though
  • hy4000uk #106 2 years ago

why the fuck would they port shattered memories to the PS3?

the excellent software sales? the low development costs?

of yeah that's right. the shitty failure has neither of those things

play heavy rain instead. you can make yourself a cup of tea with quicktime events

No its just wishful thinking. I own all the current consoles handhelds and an ipod touch. Assuming that Im biased is silly its just trying to play the wii on my tv does hurt my eyes and head after a while.
I was just being hopeful that's all.
  • smelly #108 2 years ago

@hy4000uk : So you DONT see the advantage to having pixel perfect targetting then?

Sheesh some of you are so wrapped up in your "anti-sony" hate that you wont even admit to some of the good things about this... Not that i know why im bothering - all you msoft fangirls are going to negate me anyhow.

    @hy4000uk

You've been rather active in 3 separate discussions now on a product you consider shit for a platform you despise produced by a company you hate. What exactly are you trying to achieve with this other than making yourself sound like an utterly annoying prick?

If the Move is so rubbish and useless, then why were you attracted to the story and then the comments board? Seems like a bit of a waste of time to me (unless of course, this was the first time you had heard about it).

And I assume the people moaning the Move steals ideas from the Wii controller also moaned that the original xbox controller (and playstation for that matter) was a blatant rip off as it had buttons like previous controllers did?

Virtually everything is a copy/"improvement" of something else - its about time people just got over it! Name an electronic item in your house that isn't a copy of something else...

    It only does everything...

... that the Wii has been doing for almost a year now.

Except that it has built in rechargability, and an analogue trigger. Analogue stick would have been welcomed.

I have no PS360 an only a Wii so I'm no fanboy. I only buy the console 'cos it's the only one with Nintendo GAMES. I hope that MS and Sony force Nintendo out of console manufacturing so we can see their games appearing on these systems, because in hindsight, the Wii controls pale in comparison and are rarely well used (MP3 is the only one I can think of that justifies them).

And the VC & Wiiware are a joke compared to the PS360 counterparts.
