PlayStation Move unveiled News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

11 March, 2010

Sony has announced that the PlayStation 3 motion controller is officially to be called PlayStation Move.

Exact pricing and bundling information will follow soon, but in the meantime we've been told that the Move controller, PlayStation Eye camera and a starter disc with game demos will be bundled for under $100 this autumn.

Other deals will include a standalone controller for people who already have PS Eye; a full console pack, which includes PS3, DualShock 3, Move and PS Eye; and a range of game-and-controller bundles.

Check out our PlayStation Move photo gallery to see what it looks like these days.

The main controller features a three-axis gyroscope, three-axis accelerometer and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor. It weighs 145g and is 200mm x 46mm.

It has a colour-changing sphere, which is tracked by the PlayStation Eye camera, supports rumble, and has action buttons and an analogue trigger.

Sony will also release a smaller PlayStation Move "sub-controller", which is a one-handed device with a "sleek curved design that pairs with the motion controller", and which has its own analogue stick and directional buttons.

The sub-controller weighs a mere 95g and is 138mm x 42mm. (You can tell we scrolled the whole way down the press release on this one.) It will be possible to play through the whole of SOCOM 4 using a Move-and-sub-controller combination.

Like the Sixaxis and DualShock 3, the controllers have built-in lithium-ion rechargeable batteries and sync with PS3 via Bluetooth.

Sony said it will back the launch with "more than 20" games that either use or support Move by the end of its fiscal year on 31st March 2011.

Several of the games were shown off on-stage during Sony's GDC conference keynote. Check out the live text transcript of the conference to learn more about them.

Sony's GDC press kit includes screenshots of a number of games with Move support. Check them out:

Sony also revealed that 36 developers and publishers are supporting Move, although its list does include Tecmo and Koei separately.

It also has Sony Online Entertainment on it, which is surely a given. "Hi Kaz, it's Kaz, will you support Move?" "Hi Kaz! I'd love to! Sincerely, Kaz."

The full list of supporting companies follows.

Can't they see that all they're doing is fragmenting the market, thus confusing the mass-consumer?

Now those are some back-of-the-box bullet points for the 'casual gamer' to chew on!

Why have a sub-controller, that you have to buy separately, when they could've just stuck the analogue stick on the main move controller instead of that "move" button, and used two of them for socom etc. Also very close to the wii for my liking, but at least it's more accurate with less lag i suppose!

If I wanted Wii I would have bought one. Gives us some serious games using this equipment - like you know, Star Wars game would be perfect - or "who gives a fuck?"

been honest I thought the whole presentation was meh and geared towards the casual audience, but I did like LBP with it and Socom 4 looked playable. Anyone else noticed that the camera wasn't been moved by the cursor?

And so the waggle-fest begins...I think the trouble is most Wii owners have now forgotten they even bought a Wii in the first place (myself included) and have already got over the added "fun" of waggle games.

It's going to take something seriously impressive to convert me, considering I bought a Wii on launch day and I've only ever bothered to complete one game for it.

I agree that beyond party games, core games are going to be the real test for this stuff on PS3 (and 360 with Natal). Its here that distance between Wii and those will be cut.

SOCOM is a good start for PS3, but I'm disappointed their wasn't more than that.

Isnt GDC aimed at developers and not the gamers? Isnt the gamer show E3?

Also how do you fragment the market if you offer both ways of playing on one disk? Isnt options a good thing? Roll on Tiger Woods 2011 with the move

I know theres a lot of cynicism about this, and rightly so, but the pricing seems quite reasonable, and for people who play a lot of sports games like me (Tiger Woods, Fight Night, Top Spin etc), this could be great. Plus, like someone has mentioned, on some of the cheesy games, my girlfriend might actually have a go.

Theres always going to be people saying 'it doesnt do this/its just like the Wii', but I think Sony are doing the right thing by developing this, and I will definetely be having a go (especially considering the amount of devs on board).

edit - I also think this would absolutely suit a game like Oblivion, would love to run around bashing creatures in the face with my 'move' stick, though knowing my sodding luck i'd put it through my big expensive HD telly.

I play games to get away from reality, not act like a tit in front of my Viera... Saying all of that, I would love to play a port of No More Heroes the way it was meant to be played, without having to buy a whole new system. The Wii has some great games I would like to play like, Mad world and Murumasa. I feel like I'm missing out so this could be quite good in the long run, IF some good games come out with proper use of this peripheral.

Hmmm,pretty much what was expected.

Nunchuk/Subcontroller
Casual games
Marketing in the Wii/Natal vein
Live demo

Thing seems to work pretty well, thats for sure, although it has some little lag but its still early days of development.

But for me the interesting thing was

1)All third parties on board
2)Shipping games with dual SKUS(DS3/Move ) in one Blu Ray,so everybody can play their way (Move/DS3) so the core/casual division in many games will dissappear. This will prevent fragmenting the market as the WMP has done.
3)Move response is one frame....similar to DS3.
4)Very easy to develop for ,so a lot of option of many ,many games taking the 2 route.
5)The subcontroller is optional ,so probably the DS3 option to move the character is still allowed.

@seanthejackal : Agree.. And as I said, sony demoed this tech first.

Be interesting if you get the same number as negs as i go though :-D

Honestly - some people seem to have missed the point of the neg button - it's there to mark down and hide trolls and spammers. Not people who are disagreeing with you.. Otherwise it'll just become "mob rule" where (say for example) a load of 360 owners come into a thread like this and mark up people slagging this off, and mark down people (like me) pointing out that it actually looks quite good!

Anyone who thinks this looks like a sex toy should get out more. What it DOES look like is a HD Wii-like controller. Isn't that something that's been hankered after for ages?

As for copycat claims, I think those particular accusers should read up on the history of console-based motion control.

I hope this doesn't start an avalanche of casual waggle games a la Wii. I would be more interested in the "Move" if the core games on the Sony platform - e.g. FPS, TPS, RPG, Action, Adventure, Platformers, etc - supported this.

The list of third-party developers said to be supporting this gives me hope, though.
