PS3 is Metacritic's console of the year

Survey says it's about quality, not quantity.

Metacritic has put PS3 on top in the first annual Game Platform Power Rankings survey.

It's not just about review scores - in fact there were more highly rated games for Xbox 360 than PS3. Metacritic also takes into account the number of releases for each platform and "the best overall game quality".

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves came out as the best game of the year and was one of five titles in the top 10 for PS3. The Wii did less well - just 28 per cent of titles released for the console were praised by critics.

The best-rated Xbox 360 game of the year was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, while Metroid Prime Trilogy topped the Wii chart. Street Fighter IV scored highest on PC. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was number one in both the PSP and DS charts.

But never mind all that, what was your favourite game? Have your say by voting in the Eurogamer Readers' Top 50. It's what the suffragettes burned their bras for hang on wait.

Think its got a good chance to take 2010 as well.

    But review scores aren't everything.

"Street Fighter IV scored highest on PC."

It's a great game and all that but on PC? Perhaps time to take into account the review platform Metacritic.
  • GoldLightan #3 2 years ago

Overall quality? Digital Foundry would beg to differ :-D
  • GoldLightan #4 2 years ago

Street Fighter IV had a few extra features on PC, let you use any stick you wanted to, and didn't charge you for online. It's quite obviously the superior version.
  • koopa #5 2 years ago

It looks like PC had the the highest number of "good" games released, haters! ;)
  • LiveForever #6 2 years ago

PS3 games in the top with multiplatform releases seriously.
The only game on PS3 is uncharted and thats it.
    Definite bias on metacritic.
  • bad09 #7 2 years ago

    @ Waffleaber

You do know SF4 on PC was the best version of the game right?
  • Widge #8 2 years ago

Shadow Complex, ODST and Forza 3 would be on my shopping list. So wouldn't say its been ghastly. But yeah, its been a good PS3 year, although I would have said last year was even better. That was a prime gaming year.
  • Eighthours #9 2 years ago

Both consoles have had good exclusives this year, with Uncharted 2 probably topping the pile.
  • miiiguel #10 2 years ago

For me it was the 360, but then again is my only console, and I now have 114 games for it. Woot! Will it reach the 300's of my PS2 collection?

note-to-self: need to buy a bigger house.

I'd say that this year has been the year of platform equality.

And since there's only been one truly great platform-exclusive title in Uncharted 2, then totting up the numbers, I guess that'd sway it in the PS3's direction.
  • miiiguel #13 2 years ago

It is no doubt the best console right on par with the 360, though it was even more prolific.
  • markymark22 #14 2 years ago

Yup def a good decision. Other than left 4 dead 2 this year there's nothing else i'd have bought on 360 that i couldn get on ps3. About time that black box got into its stride! BRING ON GOD OF WAR 3!
  • GreyBeard #15 2 years ago

Demon's Souls might not have the sales, but it has the quality.

If the only game on PS3 is Uncharted, the only game on 360 is Halo and the only game on Wii is Mario.

Stop being delusional. All platforms have awesome exclusives.

PS3 has Uncharted, MGS4, Resistance, KZ2, R&C, Demon's Souls, GT5, God of War 3, Heavy Rain, Infamous, The last guardian etc.
360 has Halo, Gears, Fable, L4D, Splinter Cell, Forza, Alan Wake, ME, Crackdown, PGR, etc.
Wii has Mario, Zelda, NMH, Madworld, Wii Sports, MH3, etc.

Having said that, "PS3 has no games" argument has to die a horrible death cause its not true anymore.

    This isn't 2006 anymore. :)

All the multiplatform games run better on 360 so why they are rated higher on metacritic is questionable.
    Thats all I meant.
  • linea #20 2 years ago

I do have to say I'm increasingly tempted by a PS3. The reasons being 3- Demon's Souls, the new Team ICO game and Heavy Rain. All look unmissable.
  • markymark22 #21 2 years ago

    LiveForever
Although a lot of games run slightly better on 360 you'll notice they always say how little if any impact there is on the gameing experience. That's why it's if you have a ps3 your getting the exact same games but you also get the chance 2 play uncharted, killzone etc. Which pips it in ps3's favour. Hardly rocket science!
  • DiamondIce #22 2 years ago

I bought a PS3 off the back of Uncharted 2. An amazing game and one of the best of this generation (or any).

Killzone 2 didn't seem to click for me. I will have to give it another go.
  • cianchristopher #23 2 years ago

Here are the ten "great" games that Metacritic felt made it the year of the PS3 (I think I've heard that statement before...) - (a game needs a score of 90 or above to be considered "great";)

    Uncharted 2
    Modern Warfare 2
    Street Fighter IV
    Braid
    God of War Collection
    Assassin's Creed II
    FIFA 10
    Killzone 2
    Batman AA
    MLB 09 The Show

Here are the Xbox 360 games deemed "great":

    Modern Warfare 2
    Street Fighter IV
    Batman AA
    Forza 3
    Assassin's Creed II
    GTA IV Lost & Damned
    FIFA 10

Now, removing what's on both lists (and Braid and God of War on PS3 as they are ports of previous releases) we have:

    PS3
    Uncharted 2
    Killzone 2
    MLB 09 The Show

    Xbox 360
    Forza 3
GTA IV The Lost & Damned

Added to this is the fact that all the multiplatform games above are better on 360 by default, which makes this a lot closer than it looks to be at first....

I didn't say that about Braid, I said that Braid on PS3 was a port of a previously released game... (So, it's a bit unfair to count it among the reasons as to why "this year the PS3 was better";)...

If,say, in 2010, MGS4 came out on 360 - and at the end-of-the-year people said "the 360 kicked the PS3's ass this year cos it had Metal Gear Solid 4, one of the games of the year" - that'd be a bit unfair, no?
  • markymark22 #35 2 years ago

I dont think metacritic care about voice chat! This is about games, try to focus would ya! If anyone really wants voice chat they would buy a headset or use any bluetooth headset as there compatible. I know it comes free with the 360 but ya could spend the saved cash from xbox subscription to buy one!
I prefer chatting to my friends on the phone or in person but hey thats just me so i'll give it a miss on both consoles!
  • miiiguel #36 2 years ago

@markymark22 : how come you use a phone to talk to other ppl during gameplay? You're not mixing it with real, flesh and bone friends are you? That's a diferent... life. Er... for me.
  • drxym #37 2 years ago

@cianchristopher, If,say, in 2010, MGS4 came out on 360 - and at the end-of-the-year people said "the 360 kicked the PS3's ass this year cos it had Metal Gear Solid 4, one of the games of the year" - that'd be a bit unfair, no?

Not really. A game either counts or it doesn't irrespective or when it appeared on another platform or not. I'm sure (for example) that Critter Crunch will turn up on the 360 next year and I'm sure it will count favourably for the 360 when it does too.

Personally I think Braid is a good game, but I don't see why people rave about it.

As for your analysis of the PS3 top ten, I do not know why you expect it to contain just exclusives. There are some good cross-platform games, and indeed its a sign of a healthy platform to see some 3rd party titles in there. Anyway, Uncharted 2 was undoubtedly game of the year overall and it's well deserved too.

  • Paulie_P #38 2 years ago

I have to say this probably reflects me this year, I have all the consoles and PS3 has been my most used this year. Valkyria Chronicles and Fallout 3 took up a lot of my time. I also got Batman for the PS3 despite ordering it for the 360 from Game and Uncharted 2 has kept me busy. I opted to get Pro Evo for the PS3 because I knew more people on the PS3 who would buy it (bought Modern Warfare 2 for the 360 though).

Next year I'm struggling to justify paying for XBox live so the PS3 might get even more use.

I'm not saying PS3 is better than the 360, each console brings something different to the table. Just saying that I used the PS3 more this year.

  • Odessa #40 2 years ago

Do not know if anyone mentioned it, but on what is the ranking based? (in the table below)

I mean if you take Median Score PC should be first with 72,5. %good it cant be either as then psp would be before Xbox360.

I dont wanna discuss which platform is better but this statistic is a joke.

And how the f... its possible that a DS game is in the top 10??? No matter how good the game idea is, the grafics are just BAD. (i like my ds!!!)
  • cianchristopher #41 2 years ago

I didn't say it should contain just exclusives.

What I did was - I filtered out the multiplatform titles on both lists, and excluded older games that shouldn't be counted in such a competition as "console of the year"...

That left it with 3 against 2 in the "great" games category!

When you include the indisputable fact that the 360 outperforms the PS3 on all the included multiplatform titles on both lists - well that kinda evens it up a bit, no?

That's rhetorical, by the way! Of course it evens it up! The PS3 had 3 games, the 360 had 2 games, but, the 360 had better versions of 5 games on the list! So it's a tie!

Then we go back to the old "PC is the best gaming platform" thing as it has the best version of every multiplatform game. The main thing is that Fallout 3 (for example) remains fantastic when played on PS3 or on PC, so it really doesn't matter.

PS2 multiplat games looked worse than GC and Xbox ones but we seemed to care less back then... in fact I preferred those times where we just played good games and liked them regardless of what they were pushing around the screen.
  • gjgjg #43 2 years ago

i bought a ps3 this year for uncharted2, GOW collection and future exclusives (past ones werent worth it, i tried them all - good, but not worth getting a console for).
im glad i got the nice slim console and everything but since i finished Unch2 it has just sat there. I think i use my wii more than my ps3... any dual platform releases are 99% sure to be better on 360 (sorry fan{atic} boys, pls read digifound), and the online aspect is better as its more active and involving (yes its e2 per month, ouch;).

this time next year may be a different story, but i honestly cant see the ps3 racing ahead of the 360 by any clear margin until atleast 2011.
  • Murton #44 2 years ago

Erm, everyone does realise that Metacritic just gather up the review scores from everywhere they can and provide an average from those figures right? They're not saying that the PS3 is the best console in their opinion but the best console based on the fact that its games library's average review score is higher than that of the other platforms, despite having less games than the other platforms.

I can't say that I disagree though, most developers are getting close to parity now on multiplatform releases and the PS3 exclusives do tend to be better games in my opinion, I just don't enjoy Halo or Gears whereas Uncharted was frankly amazing and I'm expecting great things next year from GT5 and Heavy Rain. The 360 on the other hand only has Mass Effect 2 coming soon that interests me, and I'll get that on my PC so can it really be called an exclusive in the same sense as a PS3 exclusive title is exclusive?
  • markymark22 #45 2 years ago

    miiiguel
Ha yeah sorry i worded that wrong! I'd prefer just have friends round to play multiplayer i meant. And if online i prefer it quiet....especially with the 360's massive popularity in d U.S... its full of whooping annoying american teenagers. Na thanks no headset needed in my opinion!
  • miiiguel #46 2 years ago

PS2 multiplat games looked worse than GC and Xbox ones but we seemed to care less back then...

That's true, but that's probably because there was no real competition for the PS. Every time I'm close to get a PS3 I read some nasty stuff from members of its (auto segregated) community member, and I change my mind (which is a shame Sony's sales woman is very nice). I have to admit, that probably, had I collected a huge number of PS3 titles and then thought of buying a 360, I'd probably think the same. Point is, obnoxious, fanatic, unpolite members do their console of choice a disservice, money is better than words.

You know why people bring it up so much now, though, right?

It's cos Sony brought out the PS3 last, and hyped it up as the "ultimate machine of all time" that would make the 360 look like a complete joke!

The PS2 never had that kind of shit hanging over it! We all knew that the PS2 was weaker interms of hardware than the GameCube, which in turn was weaker than the Xbox... That fact was acknowledged by everyone, including the platform makers! That's why everyone didn't go nuts for these "console wars" in the previous generation...

Sony (and their cheerleaders) are responsible for the "internet wars" of the last 3 years! They over-promised and under-delivered...
  • sam_w #50 2 years ago

    @ cianchristopher

Wrong again, if you actually take time to do any form of research at all, you'll find that all of those multiplatform titles perform practically identically on both platforms. Most of the time when PS3 has performed poorly with multiplatform titles is on launch, and if you can seriously argue that 360 has had anywhere near as good exclusives in recent times, you have to have your head examined!
The 360 did not have better versions at all, so I think you really need to check things before parading them around here. In fact, the PS3 version of Batman was superior as it included being able to play as the Joker on extra challenge maps. Wrong again eh? Starting to see a bit of a trend with everything you say :)

True, but they do choose which publications and websites to include in their rankings, and this list seems to vary from game to game. So you could argue that they are influencing the overall metascore that games end up with.

Not that I'm suggesting a vast government reptilian overlord conspiracy here.

No kanga, "ppl" are somewhat right, Metacritic couldn't care less about the quality of their numbers, they do it "blindly". on Halo 3 metascore they've inlcuded the joke site Sony Defence Force, and that just an example.
  • Darren #54 2 years ago

Well out of the four gaming platforms I own (PC, 360, PS3 and Wii) I'd have agree completely with Metacritic's top three and their 6th choice.

Certainly the PS3 has had a great year, particularly for exclusives and it hosts my favourite game of 2009 by miles, Uncharted 2. The PC would be my second pick because its the platform of choice for me for multiformat games now over the 360 and this is why the 360 has suffered as it hasn't had many great exclusives this year IMO. In fact, Halo Wars (OK) and Forza Motorsport 3 (great) were the only two that interested me. I won't even bother to say anything about the Wii except that it continues to disappoint me as a games console.
  • patch #55 2 years ago

I preferred Spectrum to Commodore 64, Amiga to ST, Gameboy to Lynx, SNES to Megadrive, ps2 to N64... frankly I'm getting too old for this sh*t. I'm just gonna go with what I like and leave the b*tching to the kids.
  • systems #56 2 years ago

But... but aren't there fewer 360 exclusives because the 360 is essentially a PC so the games tend to come out for PC as well? There are a couple of exceptions (GoW2, Halo3) but they'll come to PC when MS wants them to (as GoW and Halo2 did).

Anyway, what do I care. Well done Sony (for PS3 and PSP). And Microsoft (for PC and 360). And thanks to Nintendo for making gaming acceptable to the rest of the population.
  • Meatblade #57 2 years ago

    Snes was better though.

I still have this argument to this day

  • dr_faulk #58 2 years ago

"in fact there were more highly rated games for Xbox 360 than PS3."

Interperate the statistics any other way you want, but the above carries the most weight. As an owner of all consoles, I felt there wasn't one game on the PS3 worth owning this year (says the man who bought three 2009 releases).
  • Widge #59 2 years ago

I don't know, Sony were saying that the PS2 was going to be doing graphics on a par with the CGI scenes on Final Fantasy 8. The net wasn't so widespread back then though, so you don't get this massive exposure like you did then. I think times have certainly changed thanks to that. Especially the way we receive stuff like E3. Half the time we're expressing disappointment at the content of the show, but mainly because we know about most of the stuff before it kicks off.

I mean there was the entire thing about "Halo is the best console game ever" that used to hang around but it got to a point where I just saw games I wanted to play and I'd buy them on whatever platform I fancied.

Luckily I didn't buy on the back of exec hype machines. It was like the PS2 for me, an entry route to bluray and the tipping point was the media streaming. Bloody expensive box but I've saved loads of money and time instead of burning US shows to DVD! As for games, I knew good stuff would come out regardless so wasn't too fussed.

I do like the showing of MS though insofar as for a real decision process for next gen. I don't care for backwards compat so wouldn't be so concerned about transferring my PS3 games to a PS4 for example. Whatever hits my desired feature set best will get my cash.
  • Darren #60 2 years ago

@MESSIAH999 - I'm guessing you don't play games on the PC by your comments because that is the best platformat for multiformat games if you have the hardware. Not only do the games look nicer and run better with none of this sub-720p/tearing shite but they're much cheaper (helps offset the hardware costs somewhat). Sucks that PC owners frequently have to wait months for these games but as the saying goes: "good things come to those who wait". ;)
  • drxym #61 2 years ago

@cianchristopher, as you well know even Digital Foundry finds only slight differences in most games. Occasionally the comparison might uncover a poor port or some significant difference but generally that is not the case and certainly do not impact on the review score. This is in marked contrast from a few years back where sloppy, lazy ports were the norm. And games that do make use of the PS3 hardware demonstrate results can be nothing less than spectacular.

All of this is a side issue of course since the PS3 is still metacritic's console of the year. Admittedly the advantage to the PS3 is slight, but the fact remains the platform has had some stonking titles this year.
  • Widge #62 2 years ago

"batman AA, res5,mw2,assassins2 are all better than any ps3 exclusives released"

these high ranking multiplats... want to quantify the statement "far superior" a bit more. Bayonetta certainly, but these? I don't think so. Plus its an IMO moment with your opinion of the exclusive titles worth.
  • GoldLightan #63 2 years ago

Metacritic is mostly useless because there is no consistency from one game to the next as to which or how many reviews they use in the average, and also because many of the sources are part of the same media conglomerates that are publishing the games, albeit loosely disconnected.
  • Zomoniac #64 2 years ago

And since there's only been one truly great platform-exclusive title in Uncharted 2, then totting up the numbers, I guess that'd sway it in the PS3's direction.

By any conceivable definition, God Of War Collection is a truly great game. But I guess you could conceivably argue it's not an exclusive. But it is for the purpose of this year's summary.
  • Zomoniac #65 2 years ago

res5 ... better than any ps3 exclusives released

Is that serious? 15 year old completely fucked up controls, game-breakingly bad AI and the worst story ever is better than Uncharted 2??
  • hiddenranbir #66 2 years ago

    Conspiracy against PC, tut.
  • RobTheBuilder #67 2 years ago

So not to slag off the PS3 (it's had some great games this year). But essentially it won because people didn't put shovelware on it; not because it had the most brilliant games?!

By that reckoning the Dreamcast is the best console of all time ever.
  • TonyHarrison #68 2 years ago

Metacritic's growing influence on the industry concerns me. I've noticed a couple of times now that games with mostly high scores early on in the review cycle suddenly seem to get extremely low scores as if to balance it out. And it's always from the same magazines/websites as well.
  • canIdoyabombsforya #69 2 years ago

All but Two of the top 10 rated games have guns in, 1 platformer and 1 racing game. Not really a good advert for the industry IMO.

Also, games that have sold over 1 million

    360 80
    Wii 67
    PS3 46

And the only stand out game as something different on the PS3, scoring over 90, is Little Big Planet.
I've said all along, we need a huge change in technology to stop gaming going in a rut. At this rate there's no point in MS or Sony thinking about new hardware. The charts are so so simlar to the last gen.

    1 Grand Theft Auto IV 2008 98
    2 Uncharted 2: Among Thieves 2009 96
    3 LittleBigPlanet 2008 95
    4 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2007 94
    5 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 2009 94
    6 BioShock 2008 94
    7 Street Fighter IV 2009 94
8 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 2008 94

i kinda miss the huge pile of exclusive titles which PS2 used to have... With all the shit developers are doing to PS3 versions of multiplatform games there ought to be more first party or exclusive games for PS3 using its architecture right... Still, I am pretty happy with PS3 after testing both Xbox and PS3. What surprised me the most is how I like BRD movies... I guess most of people stating they dont need a HD disks for movies have Netflix HD content available to them or havent seen proper BRD release on big screen yet so they dont know what they are missing

    nuts :p , I have 30 games (15 xbox 360 and 15 ps3 ) and i thought i had some sort of gaming problem hehe

There are lot's of reasons do distrust Metacritic, but maybe not this one. Anyway I don't care, I have 'em all and they all get some love.

    @miiiguel

Ah, I assumed they used the same sites for all reviews. That they don't is a bit rubbish and does somewhat undermine any survey they might make of their own results.

Apologies everyone. I jumped the gun somewhat there.
  • chessboxer #75 2 years ago

Didn't IGN come to the same conclusion as Metacritic last year?
  • onyxbox #76 2 years ago

All in all it's been a good year for PS3; 3rd party stuff has reached parity (pretty much) and the exclusives have been very good.

Look forward to next year (360, Wii & PS3).
  • McGooch #77 2 years ago

    PINTENDOX WiiS360 FTW!
  • Teamallstar #78 2 years ago

This is the most retarded thing I have ever read.

How anyone can think that the ps3 won 2009 is living is some backward alternate reality. I have both 360 and ps3 and rarely even turn in the playstation as it feels like an out of date machine.

The controller feels aweful to use and the games always look better on the 360.

Meant to be playing some bbfc beta tonight with a friend on the ps3 but I just heard that there is a system update, so I will have to wait for 45 minutes whilst it downloads and then 30 mins for it to install!!!!!

    PS3 = FAIL
  • Diomedes #79 2 years ago

Well ,this was a given .With MLBA 09 The Show ,Demons Souls ,Killzone 2 ,Infamous ,Uncharted 2 ,Ratchet and Clank Future 2 ,God of War Collection (plus japanese exclusives as Atelier Rorona ,WKC ,Yakuza 3 ,Gundam 2013) ,PSN games as Fat Princess ,Flower ,Crash Commandos ,Shatter ,Cuboid etc, plus all the multiplattform goodness(Resident 5,SF IV ,MW2 ,AC II ,Dirt 2 etc) ....Wii has had a dire year until NSMBW and 360 had very few exclusives (Forza 3 ,Halo ODST and L4D2)that were mere updates of previous games.

And 2008 the PS3 had the two best games of the year ,MGS4:Guns of the Patriots and Little Big Planet.

Now go for 2010 ,third in a row.
  • Deckard1 #80 2 years ago

What are the 360 exclusives in 2010 anyway? I'm struggling...

    _______

Mass effect 2, splinter cell conviction and Alan wake all in the first few months of the year. 360 also gets a playable version of bayonetta as well
  • ronuds #81 2 years ago

I guess the fact that the 360 had 51 more games this year isn't considered a factor?

Edit: Oh, the EG article doesn't mention it! It was in another article.

Also, give me a break with the exclusives already. They both have the same number. Just because "you can't think of any" doesn't mean they don't exist, so get your heads out of your asses. Because, really, foolishness like that doesn't do anything for the perception of your intelligence.

God i hope they dont oversaturate us with halo games. Games like halo gow and uncharted shouldn be diluted.
  • Meatblade #83 2 years ago

Why are people still goin on about PCs when this article is about consoles. Yeah a lot of xbox games come out on PC, but theyre still console exclusive arnt they?

  • chessboxer #84 2 years ago

Were any of those 51 other games any good? If they were all shit then is that anyting to boas about?
  • ronuds #85 2 years ago

    @ chessboxer

That's the point...some of those 51 were probably shit, which dragged the 360's score down. Plus, everyone's going on about how the PS3 had such a bigger lineup this year, but...well...they were minus 51.
  • callum9999 #86 2 years ago

Why would a company show bias? I'm sure this has been compiled by many people, presumably they each have their own preferences on which console they like best. I said exactly the same thing when people were moaning about how there is an Xbox bias on this site - what would be the point?

If you like your xbox isn't that enough? Why do you need to seek confirmation in the form of an award from a website? (The same would go to anyone complaining about the Xbox winning xxx award).
  • xentar #87 2 years ago

the good thing about PS3 fans is that no-one tries to push Home as a benefit anymore :)
  • Meatblade #88 2 years ago

    @Dr_Strange
How is that a fanboy comment? im just saying theres a lot of pc comments for an article about consoles.

Its still a console exclusive even if its on pc right? Thats all im saying.
  • ronuds #89 2 years ago

Well, the same people who knock MS for releasing some exclusives on PC are the same who then turn around and complain that PC gaming is on the decline. How does it hurt anyone to release a game on more platforms? At least MS is doing their part in trying to keep PC gaming relevant - I'd think that would be a good thing?
  • markymark22 #90 2 years ago

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO NINTENDO'S 'SEAL OF QUALITY'!
While everyones bitching about ps3 v 360 does everyone forget that the great thing about ninty in previous gens that they had a brill quality control... WHAT HAPPENED?!
Now it feels like if i took a huge dump put it in front of a ninty exec he'd stamp that log with a nintendo seal of quality...
  • chessboxer #91 2 years ago

Console exclusive is a term used to falesly proclaim a multiplatform game as exclusive, usually as an attempt to state that a particular platform is the only place to play a particular game when it isn't.

Some of you might disagree with this but this has been my experience when the term is thrown around in arguments.
  • Meatblade #92 2 years ago

Worst comes to the worst, you can always buy the other console.
  • cianchristopher #93 2 years ago

@semitope: yeah, but most of those PS3 exclusives will be shit anyway so your point is moot...

Sony Fanboys have been saying this since day 1: LOL we have Haze, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Home, Gran Turismo 5, Heavy Rain, etc. etc.

It's always a mix of games that turn out to be shit, or games that get delayed again and again.... Or it's Home (LOL indeed)...

The PS3 has been a disappointment! To any rational, clear-thinking individual this is obvious. Sure, it has its gems like Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, MGS4 and Killzone 2! But these are not enough! A half-dozen or dozen great games does not make a great console! It takes more than that!

The Xbox 360 has delivered great games since 2006. And superior versions of every multiplatform title. That makes it the better console, regardless of how shitty the build quality of the thing is (and it is shitty)...
  • cianchristopher #94 2 years ago

    Again, the PS3 is good!

But, it's no PS2 (or PS1 for that matter)

    :(
  • StooMonster #95 2 years ago

If I didn't have too many PC, Xbox, and Wii games to play that I have already purchased and not yet touched (still have the likes of Fable 2 from last Xmas) then I would prolly buy a PS3 this Xmas to play the exclusives on that format too.

Sigh ... too much stuff, not enough life to fit it all in.
  • roz123 #96 2 years ago

Its funny seeing the best game on the 360 (MW2) being the 12th best game on the PC despite it being better then or equal to it in every possible way. Just shows you that PC reviews are alot more critical then the console ones
  • Dizzy #97 2 years ago

  • Geordiemp #98 2 years ago

They are both about equal in my opinion

    Best Ps3 games : UC, UC2, MGS4, Infamous, R&C

    Best 360 games : Halo 3, Crackdown

Bets multiplat gamesrunning better on 360 : Prototype, ACreed, RE5, COD W@W

Running better also means LAN Link for coop.

anyone who says one is better than the other misses out on half the fun.

I am glad for the PS3, but looking at the close numbers, two ideas come to my mind:

    1. PS3 is still not showing it is a superior piece of hardware over the 360. Basically similar experiences with some exclusives giving the edge to one or the other depending on the release date.

    2. Most of the scores of metacritic do not make too much sense anyway in multiplatform releases. Multiplatform games have usually (up to now - do not know about next month) been marginally better in the Xbox platform. So it does not make too much sense to find better or similar grades in some of those games in the PS3. Should be same or worse in most multiplatform. Are the PS3 centric game sites inflating the scores? Could be.

    Overall, basically the same

  • tancredo #100 2 years ago

    @semitope

Don't know about that, I am not saying in all, but in a large number of reviews we usually read senteces like, "still the xbox version would be the one to get" or "it does not make it unplayable in the case of PS3, but 360 is marginally superior in blablabla".

I am not saying such differences (I agree, small in may cases) make a difference for a player with just one console, but it does not make sense for the PS3 to get better scores when clearly the reviewer is saying the opposite (even by a small margin of 0.0001 points)

I could understand the same score, but not superior.

So that is why I would think PS3 centric webs tend to inflate the scores, or at least tend not to be so crytical as xbox webs

Also Metacritic averages suffer from web pages giving the same score to a multiplatform game when clearly in many cases, there are significant differences in the quality of the gameplay (both for the 360 and PS3)

Still, I consider both as excellent game platforms.

    @ MESSIAH

Don't even bother responding to those joke comments anymore about exclusives. Everyone with half a brain knows there will be close to an equal number on each.

We heard a lot of the same about this year, and how the PS3 was going to grossly outnumber the 360 with # of exclusives. The PS3 had 3 and the 360 had 2. Not a very big difference, I'd say. Same with 2010 - we already know of a few the 360 will have, and anyone who's followed MS knows there are many more that haven't been announced yet.

And, we have Natal, which will bring with it many more exclusives.
  • Apologie #102 2 years ago

i just want to say that the videogame industry at the moment is just another way to alienate millions of young ppl "and not only young" in a dream world. Games do not contribute to the development of an indivudual in any way... they dont educate or inform anyone. Pls stop wasting inumerous hrs playing games when you could be doing something else much more important and rewarding.
  • miiiguel #103 2 years ago

I say better put your money where your mouth is. Supporting the system is buying them games, thread trash-talk won't help it much. IMO.
  • Widge #104 2 years ago

Reviews tend to vary on multiplats because the reviews are shockingly clever enough to be able to review the game for its merits as a game, not as some benchmark of technical quality over the competiting platforms. If that was the case, all PC games should be marked up vs the consoles by default.

I mean you must notice that from reading reviews on here and elsewhere, its all about the game and not about the platform.
  • UncleLou #105 2 years ago

@DARREN but you game on p.c., you will be able to play me on forza3,gears2,haloodst,crackdown1/2,gta4latd/bogt,? oh no! wait you cant because all the devs have abandoned ship

If the result of devs abandoning ship is the PC having the highest number of games released bar the Nintendo consoles, and the highest "good" games ratio (same ratio as the PS3, with a significantly higher number of games in total), I am all for more devs doing the same.

  • feistycheese #106 2 years ago

Ive just read through all these comments, and realised that 70% to 80% of people on here are either 12 years old or have severe learning difficulties and social development issues.

Can someone please point me to a site where adults can actually discuss the gaming news without fear of a juvenile with his dick stuck in his disk drive coming on and spoiling the conversation?

    PS3 2009 exclusives:

    Killzone 2
    Uncharted 2
    Infamous
    Demons Souls

any gamer who doesn't want a piece of that is a blinded fanboy end off. great year for PS3 and i hope they keep it going.

    I have both Xbox360 and PS3.

I bought my XBOX360 first, about 3 years ago, and it has RROD'd on me about 3 times. The last time being on the eve of the Street Fighter 4 launch...I was pissed.

After buying Arkham Asylum for the 360 (a great game with awesome graphics) I decided that I wouldn't spend any more money on the console unless I had to; it was time for the PS3.

Free internet owns, blu-ray owns, PSN owns, HD graphics own, wireless controller owns etc. The games are sweet, MW2, Unchartered 2, MGS4, Dragon Age etc. I just love this console and have not touched my 360 since.

I may get Mass Effect 2 for the 360 and Liberty City Stories, but Sony have made a damn beast of a console.
  • My1stLoveJak #111 2 years ago

Little Big Planet is awesome! I don't care what anyone says, Infamous spent a lot of time in my PS3 (although, I didn't give it a vote for best 5 o'the year...those went to Demon's Souls, NSMBWii, Blazblue, Chronotrigger (first time I played it, this year) and Retro Game Challenge)

Where was I? ... I love my PS3. Don't ever take it away from me! More awesome games for it than I have time to play, right now...gaming's good, these days! Rejoice, people
  • des #112 2 years ago

  • niteninja #118 2 years ago

Ive owned both consoles and I say the ps3 is far superior to the 360 heres why,far more original exclusive games little big planet, heavy rain and last guardian just to name a few.
360 has some great games but a lot of the exclusives are generic and 2010 will be no different halo 40,fable 3 gears 3 ect although alan wake looks really intresting.
Online I dont get live at all you pay 40 quid a year and it doesnt even have a browser built in.
psn is free has over a 1000 movies for download now and the ps3 isnt perfect but its a far more reliable piece of hardware than the 360.
The ps3 is a complete console out of the box the 360 isnt.

I only own an Xbox 360 and though xbox had a good year for downloadable games, you have to conceed that overall PS3 has had the stronger line up.
  • makeamazing #121 2 years ago

I dont see what the fuss is all about, if you were happy with the games that came out on your selected console, whats the problem? If you werent happy, then look at the next years games or get a new console/PC....

Why people are getting angry at websites giving awards for a particular console, the other day it was the telegraph saying the Xbox was the better console, today its the PS3, i am sure next week another website will say something different.

We are all different and all like different things, why people cannot get over that fact I dont know.

  • muscleblade #123 2 years ago

Criteria is wrong since many of the lackluster PS3 multiplatform titles actually have a higher metacrititc score on the PS3. Seems Playstation mags are very generous. Just look at the metacritic stats for Bayonetta on the PS3. We all know that the PS3 version isnt even close to the quality of the 360 version (see face off) but the score says something else. Can we trust the system. No way.
