PS3 DualShock 3 rumbles all compatible PS2 games

Sony confirms.

Sony has confirmed to Eurogamer that all PlayStation 2 titles that support rumble and are compatible with PS3 will also rumble if you use the new DualShock 3 pad.

During last week's hands-on with the new controller, we noted that PS2 rumble seemed to be disabled. Since then, PS3 firmware 2.0 has quietly introduced support.

The news from Sony adds to anecdotal evidence from eager importers who reported success getting rumble out of games like Rez and Katamari Damacy.

PlayStation 3 games that already support the pad include MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction.

So, another reason to put one on your shopping list, although you might have to wait a while if you opt for an import - the demand, not to mention price, seems pretty high. The official European and US release date for DualShock 3 is spring 2008.

my order from the 11th of October with YesAsia has still not been dispatched, a lot of people must have got in before me, or they didn't get many in.

I thought a month in advance might be early enough, i was wrong.

    PS3 DualShock 3 supports PS2 games, just as the newly launched 40GB PS3 doesn't

Haha, whats the point when B/C is vanishing from the new consoles?

So why can't we actually buy a Dualshock3 pad... like now... then, Sony? Eh? EH? :x

    You're a disaster, Sony.

Too bad that some of the most relevant PS3 games only add a superficial and shitty rumble implementation. I am talking about you, Motorstorm.
  • GamesConnoisseur #11 4 years ago

See! This is why it is worth getting DualShock 3, likewise ordered it on import but expect myiagros to get it a good while before I can! As he ordered it couple of weeks or so before me!

Hoping ll get mine before Christmas but ...

Thank goodness, I was worried my PS2 experience on my PS3 would be lessened by the lack of rumble (I can't imagine playing many games without it). Hopefully they arrive in time and in plenty supply.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the matter too.

This is all well and good if Sony are intending to replace the outgoing 60GB model with something that offers backwards compatibility with PS2 games, but if they're not, it's a bit of a 'two fingers up' announcement to anyone who hasn't already got a 60GB PS3.

I'm hoping that Microsoft's recent announcement that they'll be offering Xbox games for download via Live makes Sony rethink the BC cull for future PS3 models.

I'm hoping that Microsoft's recent announcement that they'll be offering Xbox games for download via Live makes Sony rethink the BC cull for future PS3 models.

A number of Sony PR heads have already hinted at old PS2 games being ported to the PS3 and made available over the PSN, long before MS announced XBox classics for Live.

It is both something obvious to think of and a natural progression to make from cutting off BC.

    Pricks.

There's still a chance we'll see PS2 games available for download sometime in the future, thus making use of the rumble support. And the PS3 still plays PS1 games, as far as I know, which also have a lot of rumbley games.

"who cares about rumble you need a new controler nothing beats xbox 360 pad its the king of controlers"

The 360 will be King of the Skip soon.

They can't win really, can they? Not that I have a great deal of sympathy.

"Sony has confirmed to Eurogamer that all PlayStation 2 titles that support rumble and are compatible with PS3 will also rumble if you use the new DualShock 3 pad."

Since the number of compatible PS2 games on the new PS3 models is zero, this statement is entirely true

don't know if this has been posted on the forum yet, but one conspiracy theory is that Sony dropped the b/c on PS3 because the new yet to be released PS2 lite will be able to plug into the PS3 & so "restore" compatibility. This would partial explain the PS2 compatibility of the new DualShock 3. Purely a rumour at this stage of course.........
  • Drakron #25 4 years ago

A number of Sony PR heads have already hinted at old PS2 games being ported to the PS3 and made available over the PSN, long before MS announced XBox classics for Live.

Key word is "hinted", they also hinted the same about the PSP and PlayStation games with nothing coming out yet.

The reason we are taking the piss is backwards compatibility will cease the moment the PS3 60GB model sells out in Europe, making the whole statement about DualShock 3 rumble functions only useful if you own the PS3 60GB model.

This is example of the left hand having no idea of what the right hand is doing ...

I'll have to agree here with those posts that say it's rather ironic that Sony continues to talk about a subject that is clearly still an open wound with the majority of PS3 owners; that is the reduction and "culling" on backwards compatibility of PS2 games.

Don't forget, just because the 60GB model has backwards compatibility, it's widely recognised that Sony will not update this any further.

When you consider that the 40GB model does not have backwards compatibility in any shape or form, the 60GB has 'limited' compatibility and that the DualShock3 is the TRUE controller Sony intended for the PS3 but couldn't deliver at launch, it makes you wonder who gives a sh*t what Sony says anymore?!

As well a slipping the DS3 support, the firmware 2.0 had a lot of little tweaks that were not spelt out in the documentation, which led to a big MEH on the net which was perhaps not justified. Like L1/R1 being used for back/forward browsing in the PS shop, now matching the net browser controls, something folks had asked for, and the R3 zoom on the net browser defaulting to full screen width, instead of full zoom that has to be unzoomed. Nice little touches, but they don't get credit. Yeah, still want the in game XMB and messaging, but shouldn't be long.

And yep, there goes my PS2 for a trade in against Drake.
  • élbéróss #28 4 years ago

im guessing sony have another bc model up their sleeves somewhere in the future..

  • zedzee #29 4 years ago

    @ élbéróss:

I can speak a little Arabic.

Egyptians have a saying: Min boo'ak, lil bab ill semah.

Direct translation means: From your mouth to the gates of heaven.

Which really means (get there eventually!): I think everyone would just simply LOVE that! Sony would be forgiven all current sins and they can walk out of the confession box with their head held up high (and hopefully they won't commit any more sins in the future), having delivered what PlayStation fans wanted from DAY ONE!

A fully and regularly updated backwards compatible (who cares if it's done in hardware or software) model with the DualShock3 as standard, at a decent price - say £300 - with a 160GB HDD.

That would be so fabulous. Or am I just fantasising?

I have a DS3 and can't get the rumble working with Ratchet and Clank (PAL). Anyone know how to enable it?
