New PAL Releases Roundup - 29/01/10

Mass Effect 2! MAG! Tatsunoko vs. Capcom!

This week's biggie is Mass Effect 2, at least for those people that own a PC or Xbox 360. I'm not going to bang on about it, as we've done quite enough of that in our shambles-slash-podcast. Check out our 10/10 Mass Effect 2 review if you really must know more.

And there are other games of note this week. Take MAG, the multiplayer shooter for PS3. This is genuinely groundbreaking for a console game; 256-player battles online with a pseudo-MMO framework to level-up within. Zipper's creation may not appeal to all, but certainly all should take heed.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom should provide a breath of fresh air for Wii owners this week. It's a fighting game by Capcom; a rare addition on Wii by a company that does fighting games. Look out for our review soon.

Broken Sword's been released on iPhone this week, should you not have noticed amidst all the iPad fwappery.

Finally, Assassin's Creed II expanded via The Battle of Forli DLC this week, although this turned out to be poor and not worthy of your cash.

I'm not a huge beat em up fan but I'm really tempted to get Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, it's been received rather well elsewhere.

Nice, Mass Effect 2 sounds amazing - how often do we get a masterpiece released this early in the year?
  • riz23 #3 2 years ago

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom is completely borked unless you have a gamecube controller or classic. Its all context sensitive otherwise and suitable only for 8 year olds.

Edit: it's silly to get negged for being objective and pointing out an obvious flaw that needs to be highlighted before anyone buys this. A lot of people would expect a new wii game to work with a standard wiimote and this game patently does not. Let's see what the EG review says about it.

Buying ME2 gives tiny orphan babies cancer, true story don't buy it. Don't I tell ya! Friggin' rich scum parading around with their fancy pancy computer game "ooh look at me I'm shepherd in ME2". This country is going downhill I tell ya!

I'm bloody Shepherd you got that Richie Rich? I'LL save the galaxy.....in a couple of weeks!

    / Is skint...

Oh and what's with that bloody gay Shepherd everywhere on the advertising? Looks nothing like me....

Mass Effect 2 & Tatsunoko. Recieved my Tatsunoko stick earlier this week. Maybe buy MAG but will I ever play it? Wheres the UK version of Dark Void for the DSI?

To be fair I don't think anybody was even planning on playing it without a classic controller or arcade stick.

Tut, tut... since when has 5/10 been deemed 'poor'? Surely it's mediocre/average?

Someone marked me down for that?

Jeez, I was just joking, you can be Shepherd. OK?

(I stand by the orphan cancer though. £29.99 and inferno armour from the paper who wants the story!)

I would be able to agree/disagree with the Mass Effect 2 review had Coolshop actually frickin sent my copy out on time! 'Tomorrow!' they say. Only after I threatened to swear at them on the chat thing again, mind.
  • The_Inquisitor #12 2 years ago

I got Mass Effect 2 but (stupidly) decided to start the original again only last week so probably won't get around to playing it for a while.

A few weeks into the gaming calendar and I'm already playing catch up. Hmm
  • Sonic_D #13 2 years ago

If you buy TvsC also make sure you get a classic controller. Without it the game is fun, but not very satisfying as the controls are so simplified. Good laugh if you're playing buddies who are shite at fighting games, but really to get the most out of this great game get a classic controller.

It does feel a bit slight next to MvsC2, but it's still fun.

ME2 refused to import my completed ME1 save game for some reason, so I ended up loading up ME1 and replaying the last mission again. ME1 character successfully imported into ME2 now, and I am a happy bunny ;)

Tatsunoko is ace apart from oh yawn its RYU again when you go online but no lag so far which is impressive. Especially liking Yatterman but Viewtiful Joe is abit poor, was looking forward to using him.
  • KDR_11k #16 2 years ago

I agree on no lag, my few matches so far had no apparent lag and I usually get lag in ANY game on my PC. Some reviews claim it's terrible but I guess that has to do with nobody having the game at the time the review was written and thus getting bad matchups.

I did use Ryu at first simply because of familiarity, I played Street Fighter and knew what moves he has (I don't remember Chun-Li's so that wasn't a go-to character for me).

I think you can tell fairly easy what opponents use the Wiimote because they spam special moves (makes them more predictable though, special moves aren't some kind of automatically superior move so it's not unfair). I used my CC Pro right away.

    @ RustyBullet

My mum had cancer so I know all about it Mr snooty.

It was merely an obvious a bit of fun with clearly no malice or offense intended. You may not like the humour but calling me names over a silly joke shows who the real idiot here is I'm afraid.

I will be shooting alien robot trash and boning blue chicks for the next few weeks! ME2 it is.
  • Jelly_Head #20 2 years ago

Thexder Neo gets big thumbs down from me... a weird cross between R-Type and Ranger-X, but in which (in the R-Type-like sections) the forward velocity of the spaceship is fixed, leaving you flailing around the screen like an idiot? Just horrible to play. No wonder I had never heard of the original "classic" game.
  • Jelly_Head #21 2 years ago

I was trying to work out what possible benefit a demo of Uncharted 2 could bring Naughty Dog at this stage and could only come up with the conclusion that the game did not sell well enough, and that they were now trying to target those people who still remained unconvinced by the glowing previews, gushing reviews, video previews, TV adverts etc. Almost as if they're saying... "now you grumpy sods... see what you're missing out on?". I wonder how successful this will be.

Thumbs up! I laughed and I'm intelligent. :-)

    @Rustybullet
I agree that cancer shouldn't be taken so lightly, but it was used in context of a joke.
I think a lot of people (including me) get a little sore when people make jokes out of it, but you have to just bite your lip and realise there would be no malice intended.

Well, I finally got my copy of Mass Effect 2 and I'm frickin lovin it! The opening was a masterpiece, and a lesson to all devs on how to open a game. I'm so happy I've got some decent games at the beginning of the year, normally twiddling my thumbs around this time.
