Nolan Bushnell working on an MMO News

News by Oli Welsh

3 March, 2008

Interesting snippets are still coming to light from the Game Developers Conference of the week before last. Here's one you might have missed: Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari, creator of Pong, and all-round father of the videogame industry, is working on a massively-multiplayer game.

The revelation comes in this Gamespot interview. Bushnell, asked if he was working on anything in the MMO field, simply said "yes".

He wouldn't be drawn on details, but supported the view that World of Warcraft doesn't have to be the only game in town.

"I think that it's an unavoidable trend that there's some socialisation and that massive multiplayer games are important, Bushnell said. "As compelling as World of Warcraft is... there are other ways to play a game."

I think Nolan left Atari in the 70's. Waaaay before the ST came to be. I could be wrong though....

I very much doubt it'll be combat based or have a quest structure that requires grinding or farming. I bet he wants to push the social aspect and focus more on ad-hoc collaboration within mini-games. I expect something along the lines of Puzzle Pirates to be their goal.
