Nintendo planning new DS this year? News

DS News by Tom Bramwell

27 October, 2009

Nintendo is planning to launch a new DS with even bigger screens, according to a Japanese news outlet.

The Nikkei news service (thanks GameSpot) has reportedly claimed that a model with four-inch screens could launch in Japan this year for 18,900 yen (£125 / €138).

NeoGAF has uncovered a scan for those of us without a login for the subs-only Nikkei.

The launch of a new handheld wouldn't be the strangest move in the world, as the DSi launched in Japan at the start of November 2008, but having only released the revised model in the West in April, the response around these parts might be a little muted.

Nintendo UK has yet to get back to us on the Nikkei report, but we're expecting the usual line about rumour and speculation.

So it's going to be not quite as portable, sport bigger pixels, and if they don't upgrade the battery, it will probably last less (and the DSi already lasts less than the Lite... are we going to reach PSP levels here?).

yeah, same specs, bigger screens. Seems like it would be good for people with poor eyesight?

@lord: I don't know. I've never met anyone who has had any trouble reading the DS's screen, even old people. At best, they have to bring it a little closer to their eyes... but not by much anyway.

How about making a new portable console with a bit more power. Even PSP level hardware would be nice. And PSP is what, five years old?

I think they need to calm down a bit on the DS upgrades for a while. I'd much rather have an updated Wii, with MotionPlus as standard and HD capabilities.

I would buy it if they just put a bigger D-Pad on the damn little thing (and i've got small hands for a bloke). SNES size D-Pad would be fine!

whats the point in having four screens if each is only an inch in size? Snigger...

I think this falls very much into Game Boy Lite (Google it) territory, my DSi will survive until the inevitable DS2 comes along to piss on it from a great height.

Nintendo news channel has this story - Apparently it's aimed at OAP's who have complained about having trouble viewing the screen clearly

Looks more like an N64 to me...

The DSi was a very nice improvement for only 20 euros more, with extra software to keep the kiddies occupied to boot.
Bigger screens and worse battery life, is fine for the millions likely to play at home or in the car. Keep it coming Nintendo.
