HL1: Deathmatch Sourced

Valve goes straight to the Source.

Valve has announced that Half-Life 1: Deathmatch is being given a makeover with the Source Engine for better physics and lighting effects - but don't expect vastly improved graphics.

Unlike the Source Engine versions of Counter-Strike and Day of Defeat, the new HL1: Deathmatch isn't getting an art overhaul. However, we are promised new HDR effects including "blooming", according to US website 1up.

So far, the list of maps being upgraded is as followed: Boot Camp, Bounce, Crossfire, Datacore, Frenzy, Lambda Bunker, Rapidcore, Snarkpit, Stalkyard, Subtransit and Undertow.

There's no news yet on when the Source Engine revamp will be completed, but we'll keep you posted.

Seems like the spotty intern they hired to get all the lattes and burgers and port the HL1 stuff is turning out to be more productive than the rest of the studio ... thats what happens when you hire keen young grads, guh!

Kind of looking forward to this.

Loved HL1:DM back in the day, playing ove a 56k modem. (Ugh)
Only thing that drew me away was TF (Source it already Goddamnit!)

Still has one of the best balanced weapon sets IMHO.

HL1:DM is already playable through Steam, and it's mainly the more dedicated clans and players who still spend time on it, so a newer version would hardly revitalise interest. And this will probably spawn another load of modders who try for the "real update" version with overhauled graphics. Great..

But Source has a much much better network code than old HL1!

You can relly notice it when playing a HL1-Mod like Brainbread and then try any Source-game (choose fast servers on each). While the first one might be more interesting gameplay-wise (at least for me) the Source-game makes you feel so much more in control. Every ported (and maybe slightly updated) HL1-mod is welcome.

Playing online with Source feels somewhat more like Quake, while HL1 managed to make it feel screwed, even though it improved much from the first versions.
